Re: X32 sounds harsh? Amen. I started off with a Yammy MG32/14FX and went digital with the 01v96VCM. The MG sounded cheap and the 01v96 sounded harsh and digital. Even the LS9s installed at white glove gigs sounded harsh to my ears. I figured 'that's what digital is all about'. I'd even used a DM2000 and a M7CL, once each, and they left me thinking 'meh...'. I'm doing exactly the same stuff I did with the Yamaha desks (tribute band) through the same PA (mostly) and the results I'm getting with my X32 are very different (in a positive way). Everything is so much clearer compared to my previous desks. There's more definition to the bass sounds as well. For a comparable price to the 01v96, the X32 brings so much more to the table; the quality of its pre-amps being one of many things. The thing is, the 01v96 is a good desk, but it has limitations that at the time, I was prepared to put up with. The sound of its pre-amps was one. Not any more though... Karl. P.S. as for using the XLRs for line level, I'd recommend using a DI box every time, rather than a jack to XLR cable or adapter. You never know when someone will switch phantom power on for that channel. Accidents happen. A £50 DI box is cheap compared to the repair or replacement cost of a £2000 keyboard...
