First gig with iPad Had my first show last night using my ipad. It was nice because instead of using my giant multicore snake (no s16 yet) I put the x32 next to the band on stage, plugged in direct, sound checked and setup monitors mixes, then went out and sat at a table with the crowd. So a couple of observations about the night... 1) I had my first system freeze! Not exactly sure how it happened. I suspect it had something to do with the iPad app. I had my iPod playing before the set started on aux 5,6, and the iPad was asleep. I think it happened when I awoke the iPad. The band was just about to start, and I went to the console to grab my phone and it was completely frozen, but still passing audio. I would think if this happened during the set, that no one would notice because it was still playing. Of course I couldn't make any adjustments until the end of the song, and then I would have to power my mains and monitors down, which is what I did. Rebooted and went on with the rest of the night. Still would be quite embarrassing. I'm not terribly worried about it. 2) Off the bat I was being approached left and right by patrons noticing what I was doing. A total of 15 people actually interrupted me while I was mixing to say, "Are you controlling the band from here!? No way!!" Sure it was a little cool at first, you feel like the cool guy. Then it got really annoying. I lowered the brightness on the screen as much as I could and tried to hover over it so I could hide it. Not a big deal but not something I really thought about until I was in the situation. But hey if you like breaking the ice with strangers this sure is a way to do it. And now that I think of it actually a pretty good way to pick up girls. Hmmmmm. 3) it did the job. It worked. However. After my experience, I can strongly say I much, much prefer mixing on the x32 itself! It's nothing against the app itself, I feel the same way using the presonus app on their board. It just cannot replace the amount of control as having the x32 surface in front of you. That "tactile" feeling is just gone. Like mixing in Pro Tools with a mouse.
