Fun With Wireless Routers and XiControl In happier X32 news (compared to post #4448), my son the computer programmer was over yesterday and we figured out one really cool thing that has a few cool results. If someone else has figured this out already and so it's common knowledge, my apologies for replowing the field. First, some background: A) I sincerely think the newest XiControl is wonderful and adds so much flexibility to the console that using it in one way or another(whether one or more iPads or other tablet devices) will be Standard Operating Procedure for us at all our events. Therefore, one or more iPads will always be present with each console present, which means multiple wireless routers (one for each console). B) Most of my gigs are one-offs, where we see that particular group or groups for the first time, or the first time in a long time. Often there are opening artists that are different than what was advanced, or newly added artists and therefore not advanced, or some other combination of factors that means you are figuring out at the last second what is needed and how you are going to fill that need in the no time available. A big worry moving to a digital console, and maybe particularly this one, is the lack of scribble strip for pen/sharpie on the console. Yes, you can put tape anywhere, but it has such a nice read-out, so why not use that? What we came up with is running an additional Ethernet cable (besides the one going from FOH to monitor console) from one wireless router to the other one, thereby linking them together. This lets you do several things: 1) The range for your iPad (or whatever) is immediately extended, as the farther router acts as a remote antenna for the nearer one. This could be good in situations where you get much closer to the farther one or if an RF-blocking metal structure gets between you and your normal router; 2) When using a Bluetooth keyboard with your iPad (or whatever) to quickly rename your inputs (as I described earlier in post #3978 on p. 199), you can go to the Setup page in XiControl and change the IP address of the X32 you are connected to, and connect through your original router to the more distant console, and rename that console's inputs, too. This way there is no need to send an input list to FOH, the patchmaster can relabel both consoles. If you have judiciously set the consoles' IP addresses, you only need to change one digit to jump back and forth between consoles. 3) You could also use unused channels to communicate back and forth between FOH and Monitor World, with less need for Clear Com. It would be even slicker if the app were redone to allow simultaneous connection to two consoles, or better, designation of a primary-connected console (in which all functions are accessible) and a secondary-connected console (in which only the naming function is accessible) so that the typing only needs to be done once and both consoles are then up-to-date. This was our big discovery, and I hope it is useful to other people, too.
