Yamaha PM5D

Re: Yamaha PM5D

Yeah, sort-of.

If you have a guest engineer come in they will still have to dial up the gain manually on the rio boxes. So you are kind of in the same boat.

That being said, I think the "rider friendliness" of the 5d is passing. Nobody seems to have Pcmcia cards for it anymore, so carrying your mix from board to board is hard to do on the 5d.

Re: Yamaha PM5D

So if I load it with MY-Dante cards and run it with RIO-boxes it's not important which model I choose?
That would only make sense if you had all of that gear already.
If what you're trying to accomplish is a good use for an old NON-RH PM5D, then just grab a cheap DSP5D and use the PM5D as a controller.
And if you already have a bunch of RIOs, then for heaven's sake, buy the CL console to go with them!

How did you find that item on ebay? I get zero hits if I try to search for a DSP5D on ebay but I can view that one using your link.

Re: Yamaha PM5D

I am sure others here have way more experience in front of these three pieces...5D-RH, 5D, and DSP5D, but in my limited exposure I feel there are some sonic differences between them. I have also had more then one engineer complain about the sound of a DSP5D when they have loaded their 5D-RH show to it.

Re: Yamaha PM5D

Does anyone know if the gain through a 5D non-RH with RIO preamps is the same as a 5D-RH? As in, can you load a show file (reassign channels to the slot) and go? The company I work for has a non-RH that hasn't came out in years with engineers favoring M7s and SC48's. We all know the resale on the non-RHs, and I am not a huge fan of the DSP5D route.

Theoretically, but I wouldn't count on it. AFAIK a Rio attached to a PM5d via MY cards has to emulate an AD8HR to get head amp control. That's 3 different generations on Yamaha mic pres. There is the Rio standard, the AD8HR standard and the PM5D-RH standard. Gain is gain, and that's why it should theoretically work, but over 3 generations I wouldn't bet on it.
