Fulcrum Acoustic Supplies Studio Monitors for SST

WEEHAWKEN, New Jersey – SST, a major recording studio just across the Lincoln tunnel from Manhattan, has taken delivery of a pair of Fulcrum Acoustic RM Series reference monitors paired with Powersoft K3 DSP+AESOP amplifiers. The system will serve as the main monitors for the studio’s largest control room.

According to owner John Hanti, the search for suitable monitors spanned 18 months. Before Fulcrum’s David Gunness demonstrated the RM Series monitors at SST, eight other companies had conducted demos of products ranging from $30,000 to $90,000; but none were up to the task. Explains Hanti, “I come from an analog background, and many of our clients want to hear their recordings at show level. I wasn’t able to find a monitor that could produce the natural, un-hyped sound I was looking for, and then maintain accuracy at high levels. Everything else we tried would rip my head off in the upper mid range.”

The control rooms at SST were designed by Sam Berkow, founder of SIA Acoustics. According to Berkow, “When Dave described his new monitors to me, I thought we might finally have found the answer. We quickly set up a demo, and it was everything I expected and more. Plus, Dave and I finally got to tune a system together again – something we’ve been meaning to do for years.”

Hanti summarized with this: “The RMs have the detail and imaging of the best small-format monitors but at ten times the volume. Their reasonable cost relative to other large studio monitors is just an added bonus.”
