Italian Train Station Upgrades Commuter Experience With One Systems Direct Weather Loudspeakers

Milan, Italy (April 2015) — The Milano Cadorna commuter railway station located near the Castello Sforzesco in Milan, Italy, recently received an upgraded sound reinforcement system featuring One Systems direct weather loudspeakers.

The original station, which was opened in 1879, was destroyed during the bombardments of the city in World War II. In 1999, the current structure was completely restored. The new sound reinforcement system is utilized in conjunction with promotional messaging and music provided on video screens located throughout the station.

A total of twelve 106IM/100 loudspeakers and video screens have been installed at the railway station. The 106IM’s design is unique for a small-format system in that it utilizes a compression driver instead of a tweeter. The high efficiency compression driver and its advanced crossover design provide impressive sonic clarity, high power handling and excellent system reliability. The CD horn’s coverage pattern is 100 degrees horizontal by 70 degrees vertical.

Milan-based Etabeta Electronics spearheaded the design of the new system. Vidimax, located in nearby Cesano Boscone, was tapped for installation.

“The 106IM provides the exact coverage and SPL we were looking for,” explains Daniele Santini, owner of Etabeta Electronics. “Plus, there are all of the advantages that One Systems products provide – resistance to humidity and low/high temperature. The station is open and therefore requires durable yet still sonically pleasing outdoor loudspeakers.”

The project, which is being completed in stages, will also include the installation of ten One Systems 103IM/100 loudspeakers and four 208CIM/100 loudspeakers. All of the loudspeakers will receive the same audio feed as the 106IMs. The 103IM loudspeakers will be distributed to reinforce the system while the 208CIM will be paired with even larger video screens for greater audience impact.

The dual 8-inch 208CIM is incredibly compact and designed to produce high SPL vocal range content with excellent intelligibility. The high output capability of the 208CIM allows it to be used in many applications where a traditional 12-inch two-way system would be used with a much smaller footprint, which was exactly what the commuter railway station requires.

“The goal is to provide commuters with entertainment and information throughout the station,” adds Santini. “The variety of direct weather loudspeakers One System offers incredible flexibility when designing a system. The fidelity and vocal clarity of their products is exactly what this train station requires.”
