What songs do you tune your PA with ?

Re: What songs do you tune your PA with ?

Lady Gaga.

Or whatever comes after her that's fun to listen to.

I'm not kidding, ask anyone.

I'd love to hear and see you put on Lady Gaga to tune the PA!

Re: What songs do you tune your PA with ?

LOL, the Lord-Alge brothers. I used to be a 2nd engineer for them in my very early days, late 80s, early 90s. Learned a lot from those guys.

Rich Costey and I used to also work together a lot at Unique Studios in Times Square, NYC. We came up together as 2nd & 1st engineers and he's obviously gone on to do some huge things. Good for him.

Thanks for the kudos. I play a bit of bass so I guess I tend to focus on getting that right. It can be tricky, but it's fun and when it works... it WORKS!

I think the big dog that you are get lost on some of the live sound folks around these parts. You are a fortunate guy to have worked on some pretty impressive projects.

I only wish we lived closer together and I'd hire you for a few days to help further hone my studio mix chops.

Jeff,

Yes, I have indeed been fortunate to have worked with a lot of great artists, both in the studio and live. I'll never take for granted any of the experiences I've had.

If I'm ever back up in the Ontario area I'll come by and visit. Hopefully I'll get on a tour that will at least take me through Toronto.

BTW, what kind of rig do you have in your studio?

Re: What songs do you tune your PA with ?

Zero 7- Home . . . Within the first few bars of this song, I can usually get a pretty good idea of how the night is going to go... I also usually stick it on as walk-out too at the end of the night. I get at least 1 person per gig, asking who the band is and what the album is called... they are a phenomenal live group.

Miles Davis & Coltrane- Stairway to the Stars

Jeff Buckley - Lover, you should've come over . . . great drums & guitars when they come in. . . not to mention the vocals!!! Around the 2 minute mark is where it gets fun.

If I'm just having fun after those, I'll go right to the Huey Lewis & the News... Power of Love from their newest Live album... it's a thick arrangement with a lot of stuff happening gives me an idea of what the horns are going to do in the system / room.

It's nothing nearly on your level, I typically work in the box, outside of using some simple automation/transport controllers. I worked on one album which went Gold (in Canada though, so smaller sales numbers obviously). But not with anyone you've actually heard of. I do most of my recording work during the fall and winter when the live stuff slows down. I look at it as a nice break and enjoy being involved in both ''camps''.

Using Protools 9 (Native), Focusrite front end stuff, waves plugs. Using JBL LSR4328P's for monitors (the ones that come with measurement mic and onboard DSP. Those are surprisingly excellent. A mish-mash of various very good but not elite level mics, mostly out of Rode, A/T, Heil, and Shure KSM lines.

Hope to cross paths with you sometime.

Re: What songs do you tune your PA with ?

I don't use any music to tune the PA. Listening to music is the last part of my process.

I use a variety of music for different purposes and to expose different ''parts'' of the PA.

If I hear something I don't like, I try and see if there is anything I can do about it-or not. Sometimes there is-sometimes not.

In no particular order-and I don't use the same things all the time.

Randy Travis-really brings out any ''honk'' in a system.

Allison Krauss-Percussive attacks of Bluegrass are good for hearing detail and seperation-smeared attacks/times etc

Janis Ian-Breaking Silence. A well produced album with little processing and some great dynamics

AC-DC With the ''openness of the music, you can hear room issues (reflections/reverb delay interference) in the spaces in the music.

Linn Recordings-Various Hi end test tunes my son got for me at the local Ferrari dealership (yeah-kinda odd
icon_rolleyes.gif
) but they are well produced.

Various rock tracks for that almighty kick drum test.

Suzanne Vega-Toms Diner Great solo vocal

I generally avoid live recordings and music that I am not familiar with-as I don't know how it is ''supposed'' to sound.

One of my bluegrass buddies is a huge Jeff Buckley fan. Depending on the crowd Buckley shows up on occasion in the walkin/break music.

Do many customers decide to buy a Lamborghini instead of a Ferrari because of car audio preference?

My son went there to check out the various cars in a high end display they were having. There was hi end audio manufacturer there also. I guess figuring that people with money would be at the Ferrari dealer, and why not sell them some high end audio gear at the time.

But what do I care-I got some good test material

Re: What songs do you tune your PA with ?

as my friends put it:

''are you going to play that annoying Japanese sh*t?''

I like this topic though. I'm always on the lookout for well recorded stuff to broaden my tuning horizons.

Try Shonen Knife (imagine the Ramones growing up as 3 girls in Osaka Japan). Saw them in '94 opening for Nirvana at the Northwestern cafeteria, of all places, and then in '99 at the Galaxy down near Costa Mesa. Fun stuff!

Anyone who turns the radio on in a Ferrari should never be in a Ferrari.

Re: What songs do you tune your PA with ?

Pulp Culture - Thomas Dolby

Last Worthless Evening - Don Henley

To focus on vocals I use a track from Jennifer Warnes.

And a few others...
