lighten up some subs

Hey,

I've got 2 yorkville ucs1's and when I got to a show yesterday one would not produce sound. Today I tested them... got the driver out of its enclosure to find it a dead short. Not a budge when doing the 9v test and nothing through my meter.

Anywho, its a heavy-ass magnet. Considering it is time to replace the driver anyway. Can anyone recommend a good neodymium (or what-have-you) driver that would make a good replacement to lighten up those subs?

I am looking in the $2-300 range.

What amp do you have on this box for starters? Without knowing the exact specs on the original driver its hard to say what they mean by long excursion, or what the real power handling it can take.
I would look at faital pro, 15hp1020, 15p1060, or 15xl1400, either will be better then the somewhat usual crap yorkville uses.

No, they won't. Yorkville has designed their box for a specific driver. A pretty beefy 15" at that. You're risking a lot by putting a completely different driver into it. And the usual "crap" Yorkville uses is B&C(though I think the USC1 is an Eminence)... I'd do some research before you suggest random drivers... :roll:

AFAIK, the driver is custom, for that box. NO other driver is going to do the job as well, unless you design one better yourself (I don't see that happening)...

If the box is too heavy, buy a different one! Selling those subs + $300 per box cash would buy something considerably better.

Call us speaker and see what they would have to say, Al has never steered me wrong on anything.

Well they added the 200 watts for the mid-high section 8O~8-O~:shock:. I guess Yorkville doesn't proof read their spec sheets. Because I'm pretty sure the standard is AES 1984-r2003/Program=+3dB/Peak=+6dB. Really I think speakers should be tested against at least a +10dB peak stimulus for the 2 hour test. Since most program material has +6 to +10dB of range. Any one else have any thoughts on that?

Mine died do to being overheated; they sounded good until the next day. BTW, it was a PL236 bridged into a pair; for an outdoor show. At the time, I think all I had was the U15 processor which doesn’t offer any limiter protection (later added DC-One, then XTi’s and now Itechs).

The driver is a custom Eminence build specifically for UCS1; see attached picture (more in the album). I tried ordering the drivers from an Eminence dealer and this drive is not found in the parts catalog.

I think 2-3 years ago, Yorkville changed all their Power Ratings across the board.
UCS1 originally rated at: 500/1000/2000 and new ratings are 600/1200/2400. The biggest jump for Yorkville in the ratings was the LS1208 from 600/1200/2400 to 1000/2000/4000; however, Yorkville did rate this one conservatively (driver was upgraded in 2006).

I was giving a pair a bridged PL236 (3700w @ 4 ohms); this lasted for about 1.5 years. Evan used to beat his 4 with a PL6.0 (2200w @ 4ohm per channel); the PL6.0 sounds beefier than the PL236, but then Crown Macrotech 5002vz sounded much better than the PL6.0. The XTi6000 sounded much better than the PL236, but not as good as the PL6.0 or MA5002; I never did try the subs on an Itech (switched to SRX718s after buying the XTi6000).

Well, it seems the overwhelming majority are saying stick with the standard driver. I'm down for that. I don't mind handling these subs too much. They're well balanced and the weight isn't horrendous. I should hear back from a local yorkville dealer on a price for the eminence driver. Any idea what the going rate on the replacements are?

And, Matt. I read through your entire thread. I don't think my failure was from a similar action. I think something must have happened in transport. They were in the van overnight maybe intense heat from that or getting knocked around could have done it. But everything tested out the day before. So, who knows.

Guarentee you that al at us speaker will give you a better 15 to put in that box. Trust me call him I already did and said you will be calling. I would not think of putting a eminence back in that box.

Lets see, we replaced the orginal drivers in eaw la528 with different ones and had better results, I replaced my jbl 2226's in my sr 4733's with faitals and the faitals blew them away. I have replaced the stock driver in yorkville es 800's and the replacement driver blew the stock away. We have replaced the 18's in the older yorkville double 18 box, and blew the stock driver away. I could probably keep going.

I bet yorkville pays around $80 dollars for that 15'' made by eminence. I'd love to see the specs, the x max, q total, bl factor, bla bla bla.

I even for the hell of it put Faital 15fx560's in a la 325, we did a simple ab comparison and like the faitals better.

Eminence would be one of my last choice for speakers, faital pro, beyma, Ciare, B+C and some rcf will beat up that stock driver.

Do me a favor call Al and report back to us what he has to say.

I live in western Ny, was hoping you were within a reasonable distance, if you were I have a 1020 and a 560 we could have thrown in there and compared to the stock driver.

Those are all front loaded boxes. I'd love to see the impedance, magnitude and phase measurements on the boxes after you "improved" them. The UCS1 is a horn loaded box, with a special compression chamber for the 15". Not any driver is going to work in there, let alone mount properly in the chamber...

Liam,

Going from a good ceramic to a good neo driver you might be able to save 10 or 11 lbs on that box. Not a large gain on something that's already a two man lift. For the money a high performance neo 15" will cost you, you could probably buy a very nice hand truck.
