Mic stands extending from the left

Hello,

I've noticed that if (facing downstage, imagine you're the singer) I put the base of a mic stand to the left and extend the boom to the right the mic clip will unscrew under the weight of the mic.

Is this something everyone else knows and I've never noticed, or does this not normally happen? It seems really obvious but I can't remember having it happen before. :?~:-?~:???:

I can get it to behave if I tilt the mic sharply upwards and push it really far back into the clip.

Thanks,

Chris

yep, pretty common occurrence. The only real fix I know of is to make sure the clip is on very securely, especially if you're extending the mic from the left. Of course, you should be making sure that all the clutches and collars on the stand are securely tightened anyway, as a matter of course. This is actually a pet peeve of mine. I hate finding stands in the stand case or elsewhere with loose clutches....

as a performer, I actually prefer the stand on my right as I find that it gets tangled up in my guitar neck when I put it on my left. just another thing to consider...

Re: Mic stands extending from the left

As a drummer(right handed). My mic comes in from the left.... I've had my pr35 weigh the clip around while I was singing... What I've found to fix this is wrap the mic cable around the boom, taking some of the torque ( not alot) but just enough to take some weight... After that it's been good. I use a regular k&m stand, the 2 part boom is almost fully extended, and at 90 degrees, just over my shoulder height when seated.

Re: Mic stands extending from the left

Are you using a mic stand/holder nut?

Mic Holder Nut.jpg

These come with 5/8"-27 thread as well as 3/8"-16 to suit your boom/mic holder thread.
When tightened against the mic holder, it will prevent it from un-screwing under normal (ab-)use…

also very true. you should always be using these to prevent the issue you mention, as well as keeping the boom arm end from getting stripped out by the clip screwing down to the ends of the threads.

Re: Mic stands extending from the left

I would use this, BUT the pr35 clip, does not engage the mic stand threads until it's amost burried in the clip... so I have to remove this nut to have access to more threads on the mic stand....

So it's remove the shure clip, and locking nut, and install the pr clip....

They say a picture is worth a thousand words:

The Threads go to the end. Either yours is stripped or it is some other version then the one that came with mine.

See pics. Second pic is the clip just set on top of the mic stand. And no i didnt strip the clip. It was like this from day one. My guitar player bought one. From a different supplier. Same issue. This is also a random mic stand I chose from the shop, not a specific one that I use on a regular basis

Re: Mic stands extending from the left

This is with a single full turn. That is enough to support the mic as shown.

Re: Mic stands extending from the left

Yeah I have been using the clip as is with the couple turns I can get on the stand, but it's not like a standard shure clip, that's for sure... I might change the threaded part out with a shure clip , just to avoid the issue... I actually had a stand this weekend that offered no thread"left over" so I used an older style wide plastic clip that was already on the stand.

Re: Mic stands extending from the left

Shane, I find no problem with this mic clip. What you describe seems like either damaged clip threads or damaged stand threads.

Re: Mic stands extending from the left

Maybe they changed suppliers, dunno... I have a brand new pr35 in a box in my shop that I'm going to try on the weekend.... I'll take pics of my guitar players mic clip this weekend when we play. This is my personal mic...nobody has ever handled it or installed the clip other than me....I spin turn the upper portion of a mic stand into the clip, not the clip on the stand. We'll see how a new clip behaves...

Re: Mic stands extending from the left

Remember that there are different outer threads on the adapters, they are not all the same, so it is good practice to let the adapter stay with the clip, not the stand. I think I've seen three different threads, and there might even be a fourth one.

Re: Mic stands extending from the left

I carry a pair of vice-grips in my mic case.

Oh, you're that guy! I used to work with someone who would screw them on so tight, I almost needed vise-grips to get them OFF!

Seriously, the only mics I routinely have a problem with are kick drum mic stands. I typically don't have a lot of room in front (small stages), and an RE-20 puts a lot of torque on the threads. It pretty much has to come in from the drummer's right side, or it will loosen and drop before the first set is finished.

Personally, I hate the lock rings. The first thing I do with new stands is remove them (although I do have a few stashed in the bottom of the mic stand trunk in the unlikely event that I do need one).

Part of the problem is mic clips that have aluminum threads (it looks like the Heil might). It alternates between being too slippery and hopelessly jamming up. The old AKG clips were notorious for this, and the old MD-421 clips would eventually lose their threads until they wouldn't stay on the stand reliably. OTOH, I've never had trouble with Shure or E-V clips (with the brass inserts) sticking.

Re: Mic stands extending from the left

The problem is because it is a right hand thread; so when a person tries to adjust the mic lower for them they wind up unthreading it. I always try and come from the right because of that. The only other thing you can do is make sure there is enough movement in the other parts of the stand so that it will allow someone to make that adjustment that they need without unscrewing the mic clip.
