Iam starting this thread to hopefully zero in on using the x32 in a recording studio environment.
Situations in the studio are very different than those required for live use.
the first area I would like to address is the use of of x32midiosc v.02.
This application emulates up to 6 Macie control unit for use with DAW's or what ever else a Mackie controll can be used fot.
Thus it is still a work in proggress, but working pretty well.
I also think x32 users need to be aware of what is controlled/being controlled by the X32 versus DAW
I see potential problems as the the x32 is functioning as a mixer and Mackie control at the same time.
Using the Behringher X32 implementation of the Mackie control has no direct effect on the X32's actual audio channels, only what is being controlled in the DAW.
i.e. if the intent of the user is to mix "in the box" , and he pushes up fader 1 (lets assume a synth is connected there), in the DAW he may be controlling a audio track.
This will raise the audio level of both.
The way the app works, the DAW is like a big remote for the X32 (which is great if you are mixing "out of the box" user just needs to be aware that he is controlling X32 & DAW output at the same time.
So the big question:
Is there a way the X32 can function as a controller only ? (similar to a synth has a MIDI Local on Local off command)

Re: x32 studio Users

Current version of x32midiosc automatees channel volume, mute and solo in Abelton.
A far as A Max 4 live device, I see 2 possibilies
1. X32midiosc converts OSC messages coming from the X32 to MIDI which could be assigned to the
Max 4 live device.
2. If I am not mistaken Max 4 Live understands OSC (may need full version of MAX).
once you understand what messages are coming from the x32, it would seem (I am no MAX expert)
setting up up rhe device you want be fairly easy.

Re: x32 studio Users-32 trk Pro Tools 10 record test!

Hi guys I wasn't exactly sure where to post this so i'll start here!

I just did a 32trk record test on an X32 via FW into my Mac Pro & Pro Tools 10. I recorded the 32trks for about 40mins and on playback I confirmed that all 32trks where visible in Pro Tools but on the X32
trks/ch's 17-24 could only be heard when I Solo'd them but NOT when I pushed up the faders. 1-16 No problem, 25-32 No problem but nothing on the Faders on 17-24. I checked my routing and everything seemed to be set right so if you guys have any ideas I would appreciate it?
Many thanks
dave

Re: x32 studio Users-32 trk Pro Tools 10 record test!

Hey Dave , stupid question, but I'd look at protools to ensure 17-24 is routed correctly...
Thanks Shane but yes all tracks in Pro Tools have there Ouputs set on a 1 to 1 basis, ie;- Pro Tools trk 1 to X32 Ch1 thru to trk 32 routed to X32 Ch 32. Trks17-24 "are" showing up on Ch's 17-24 of the X32 & I see activity on the Meters AND have confirmed audio monitoring when these Ch's are Solo'd but I get nothing with the Solo OFF & push the Ch Faders so it's clear that those trks ARE returning to the X32 on Ch's 17-24 as you would expect!

Anyone from BEHRINGER like to throw their hat in the ring???

Re: x32 studio Users-32 trk Pro Tools 10 record test!

Wow, this is a strange one. I often have the computer tell me something is in use already so it tries to disable the channels is says are in use, but never having the meters working but no sound passing.

Re: x32 studio Users-32 trk Pro Tools 10 record test!

Of course it's (mostly) something simple & more often than not "user error"I sent a PM to Joe Sanborn & John DiNicola with my problem and John called me almost immediately !!!
I am posting it here for everyones reference.

While John was on the phone he guided me thru a few things and suggested that maybe Ch's 17-24 had been inadvertently assigned to a DCA that was pulled down and low and behold that's exactly what it was and as John explained if you look at the Home Page for those any Ch's there is a visual indication if they are assigned to any DCA or Mute group, that's worth remembering!

I now have all 32 Ch's of the X32 going to 32 Trks of Pro Tools and returning back to the X32 via FW,,, very cool and thanks John!

I have to say that Behringer are going above and beyond helping people with the X32 and along with the 3yr warranty it really becomes a no brainier as you could pay 3 x more for an LS9 but you're unlikely to get this kind of service from Yamaha, kudos to Uli and all at Behringer and especially to John DiNicola who has become a Rock Star of the X32 but still makes time to look after the little guys like me!
Cheers!

Re: x32 studio Users-32 trk Pro Tools 10 record test!

Hi,

I bought at Thomann a Behringer X32 two month ago, for live and studio use.
Very pleased about the mixer, I have nevertheless a problem when using it with Pro tools 9.0.5 (on an Imac 27 inch - i7 - 8 Go Ram – Mac OS 10.6.8).
When I want to open a 48 Khz Pro tools session through X32 (who is in 48 Khz of course), Pro tools delivers this message :

The current playback engine does not support a sample rate of 48 kHz.

But everything goes fine with 44,1 Khz sessions….and of course with my DIGI 003 soundcard too (even in 48 Khz sample rate)…

Could you please help me to find quickly a solution?
Maybe the sound card of the X32 has a problem?

Thanks in advance for your answer.

Best regards,
Michel Clauss

I did experience this once myself and I was using PTs 10 with the FW connection also but not sure if that's relevant. I solved the problem by double checking that 48k was selected on the X32 & my PTs session then restarting (reboot) my Mac & recycling the power on the X32. I'm sure you are aware of this but it does cure 95% of all known ill's. Didn't have any issues after that!!
good luck!

X32 track by track recording

After having had the oportunity of trying out live settings on my X32, I'm now trying go figure out, how to use it in the studio. DAW of choice is Reaperm, but I could try it on Studio one or Sonar as well. Although I have been watching the Reaper webinar a few times now, it does not really tell, how to set it up for proper use. No big problems to make a multitrack live recording and editing it later on the x32, but hos precisely does it havs go be set up to get maybe 2 or 3 tracks recorded while being able to listen to the previously recorded tracks (roughly mixed in the box). The webinar leaves pretty many things in the dark in that regard. Can anybody help in that regard or is there any plan for a better webinar for I.e. Reaper where these things are properly explained and shown.
Any help is very much appreciated
Regards from Hanoi

hi,
a way to do this is to set the routing of the aux's 1-4 as local 1-4. This allows you to use the local 1-4 inputs (I.e. the xlrs & ch strip). You then set the inputs 1-8 etc to card. In reaper set inputs 1 -4 (or less) to record to spare traks.on the x32 set up a mix for the talent from the card input channels and the aux ch's you are using for the recording and away you go!
btw this is if you have recorded 25 or more tracks. If less then can use normal ch io in blocks of 8 set to PB from card and local to record as appropriate - also remember to set card out routing as appropriate.
I mainly use the aux method!
there are other options e.g you could do a Mon mix in reaper and send this to aux 1 & 2 (set aux 1-4 to card 1-4) and then you can record another 32 ch in one go while monitoring what you have already recorrded - think that would work if you wanted to!!!!!!!!!

Re: X32 track by track recording

I would love X32 to work in the studio but my concerns at the moment are about the reports of noise on the outputs, lack of digital I/O or any sync options, and lack of delay compensation.

And to which I feel compelled to respond: what do users expect of any device that comes to market at a cost of 35% of competing devices?

I'm not saying users should accept performance that is not satisfying to them (and this isn't aimed personally at you, James)... but to expect a US$3000 mixer to perform at the same level as a dedicated recording system or live console costing 3x - 10x more seems a tad unrealistic.

The X32 is not noisy, it delivers according to spec except for the monitor output, and the spec is close to much more expensive offerings.

All Behringer needs to do is fix the noise on the monitor outputs, but why bother, the board only cost $3k. Sounds reasonable:roll:.
