GLD80 Discussion

Re: GLD80 Discussion

Specifically Norway, where Helge lives... 8O~8-O~

Helge, do you know a guy from Eggkleiva in Norway called Willy Berg? He has repeated issues with his GLD's (his original one and the one it was replaced with.) but most other people are completely fine.

Chris

I don't know him in person, but I've read about his misfortunes on a Norwegian forum. AFAIK he's had some pretty serious issues and I believe he's looking for a replacement.

You don't, not for now anyway. If this is particularly important to you it'll probably be a stumbling block for the GLD.

The iLive has this, as well as dynamic EQ and multiband compression. It's probably one of the features they're using to differentiate the product lines and avoid drawing sales away from one of their own products.

Chris

Ducking is important to me for corp type events where I need background music to be ducked when some announcements get made. The 2 knuckle ducker is fine as long as you can see that someone may want to talk. With 2-3 wireless mics wandering around, that doesn't work so well.

So far that seems to be the big sticking point.

I want
Smaller/lighter
VCAs
Digital snake
Faster workflow
Remote operation

Re: GLD80 Discussion

I like the GLD. I think its an easy console to mix on and I would gladly have purchased one for use at my Church, but the budget just wasn't there for it.

I think the one thing that I found missing on the GLD was the lack of offline editing software. This may not be a big issue to others but for our situation, it really is a very useful tool.

I also wish it had more than 4 local inputs as we have all of our wireless receivers located at FOH. Could we have worked around ti, sure. But it would have been nice if there were 8. Along with that, to me it would have made more sense to build the architecture of the software to be able to utilize any configuration of stage racks ( 2 x AR2412, 6 x AR84, etc) so that you would have a bit more flexibility in installation. Again not a deal breaker and of course "there's the ilive for that". Just some "Gripes" I had with the GLD.

Other than that I think its a great console to work on and I wouldn't hesitate to use one. I wish I could take advantage of the deal going on now.

How about 12, if you put *one* AR84 back at FOH?

Interestingly enough, we've got plenty of analog snake channels and NO conduit or cat5 from FOH to stage, so our receivers are all near stage and the stage boxes are all at FOH... so we're not using the digital-snake capability at all.

Ya I know you can put one of the AR84's at foh, which is what we would have done. Like I said, able to work with it, just would have preferred it built into the console.

We had the opposite issue, no place to put a copper snake so cat5 was the only option.

This is likely why they have one 8ch rack connect to the 'main' rack for drum sub-snake, and the other 8ch connect directly to the surface, for those with wireless at FOH rather than in the remote rack. We're quoting a GLD set up this way - main stage rack for stage inputs, 8ch for drum subsnake, and other 8ch for wireless rack. Between remote monitoring capability for wireless, and Dante, there just isn't much need anymore for local IO on the surface.

Re: GLD80 Discussion

The GLD is definitely a nice little console although it is missing a few things (most already mentioned):
-offline editor
-ducking ability
-dynamic EQ
-multi-track USB interface and/or built-in Dante (Dante is an optional card)
-more sliders (fixed by the GLD-112)

I think the console sounds really good and it's been solid for us. We've completed several easy firmware updates which usually bring along new features.

Our console is currently for sale as we're turning over some inventory but we're otherwise very happy with it.

Re: GLD80 Discussion

I also really like my GLD, and would buy it again, even in light of the new products announced since the original release. In the interest of full disclosure, I've had two crashes on mine - one on the old 1.12 firmware, and one on 1.20, both during setup time, and on the same day - shortly before, and then after updating the firmware. I then used the desk for a week-long event with no issues. I need to contact A&H support, as one of the crashes referenced dev/sda I think - onboard storage of the desk, and I want to make sure I don't have a problem with the flash storage.

That being said, every digital desk has had a few failures - big dogs like Digico and Avid, medium dogs like the A&H desks, and even the apparent "Holy Grail" X32 . Even Yamaha - the king of reliability, have had issues with their desks. I don't believe that the GLD is statistically any worse than any other reasonable product. I'm thinking about picking up a Qu-16 as a backup desk/desk for small gigs. It has the advantage of being able to use the snake, as well as a lot of onboard inputs, so could slot in nicely with the big brother in a lot of scenarios. Right now I throw an 01v96 in the truck as a backup (I also carry a backup lighting desk, and went to amps with internal DSP so I don't have a system DSP as a single point of failure, so I care about more than just a spare desk).

As to the missing GLD features - the offline editor is coming, and they added the De-Esser in the 1.20 firmware. Dynamic EQ/Multiband compression are not yet there, but I'd bet a nice steak dinner they are coming eventually - due to some nice competitive pressure.

The X32 effect is interesting, and good for consumers. I know that has cost the GLD line some sales, and is also apparently driving the GLD price down due to rebates and special offers on the GLD, but A&H can't be too disappointed if they're expanding the line with the GLD-112.

What are GLD owners using for the Cat-5?

What case do you have, what is good/bad about it and what did it cost?

The A&H cat5 spool seems pretty expensive. I have read of some using Duracat. Comments? Duracat seems to be a good price.
You just flip coiling or have it on a spool?

Getting close to ordering a GLD if I can source cable and case.

I am using TMB proplex from Mike Pyle in 100' and 200' lengths. The 100' I have coiled in my work box. I have 2 200' pieces on a small spool.

My case was a custom lift-off with corner casters made out of corrugated plastic panel instead of wood. I should go weigh it to be sure, but I believe the case weighs about 30lbs, putting the total weight of surface in case at about 65lbs.

Just as an alternative.....we haven't decided in which direction we may go with our Midas Pro 1s, but to have something to "experiment" with, I purchased the following. I have less than $150 in both.

Cat6...not the best by no means but more durable than your standard bulk Cat5 or 6 that we use at work or you would get from the box stores. PVC jacketed. Used it a couple of times outside...wet, people walking on it and such....held up fine so far.

Audio Stage Snake on eBay

Jackreel: Neat piece of equipment. Again, not the best but does the job.

TecNec JACKREEL 3 | Full Compass

Good luck.
