Re: GLD80 Discussion
I also really like my GLD, and would buy it again, even in light of the new products announced since the original release. In the interest of full disclosure, I've had two crashes on mine - one on the old 1.12 firmware, and one on 1.20, both during setup time, and on the same day - shortly before, and then after updating the firmware. I then used the desk for a week-long event with no issues. I need to contact A&H support, as one of the crashes referenced dev/sda I think - onboard storage of the desk, and I want to make sure I don't have a problem with the flash storage.
That being said, every digital desk has had a few failures - big dogs like Digico and Avid, medium dogs like the A&H desks, and even the apparent "Holy Grail" X32 . Even Yamaha - the king of reliability, have had issues with their desks. I don't believe that the GLD is statistically any worse than any other reasonable product. I'm thinking about picking up a Qu-16 as a backup desk/desk for small gigs. It has the advantage of being able to use the snake, as well as a lot of onboard inputs, so could slot in nicely with the big brother in a lot of scenarios. Right now I throw an 01v96 in the truck as a backup (I also carry a backup lighting desk, and went to amps with internal DSP so I don't have a system DSP as a single point of failure, so I care about more than just a spare desk).
As to the missing GLD features - the offline editor is coming, and they added the De-Esser in the 1.20 firmware. Dynamic EQ/Multiband compression are not yet there, but I'd bet a nice steak dinner they are coming eventually - due to some nice competitive pressure.
The X32 effect is interesting, and good for consumers. I know that has cost the GLD line some sales, and is also apparently driving the GLD price down due to rebates and special offers on the GLD, but A&H can't be too disappointed if they're expanding the line with the GLD-112.
