GLD80 Discussion

Re: GLD80 Discussion

Well, I did it. The surface is here with the stage boxes being drop shipped. Now to get my head around the difference from Yamaha :)

My LS9 is for sale - it really was a great desk for me but my needs changed and the GLD sale price was too good to skip.

What are y'all using for lights if not the A7H one.

Anyone buy the dust cover? Like it?

I'm using the Littlite 18XR-4-LED. It's expensive, but you buy it once and then you can forget about it. Apparently the A&H ones aren't very well built.

Did you get a 2412 and an 84?

I am using TMB proplex from Mike Pyle in 100' and 200' lengths. The 100' I have coiled in my work box. I have 2 200' pieces on a small spool.

My case was a custom lift-off with corner casters made out of corrugated plastic panel instead of wood. I should go weigh it to be sure, but I believe the case weighs about 30lbs, putting the total weight of surface in case at about 65lbs.

Where did you have this made? My wife's business uses Coroplast, and I have thought for a while it would be great for some of my case needs.

The local case shop - Slamhammer. Slamhammer Roadcases Incorporated

It doesn't have the shear strength of plywood, but for cases where at least one dimension is less than about 24" it works great, as the structure is mostly carried by the extrusions. I would estimate it lowers the case weight by 30%, maybe a little more.

The web site didn't open for me.

You have a pic handy?

I believe their website is a flash-based site, so not very i-device friendly.

I had them build the case with corner casters so I can tow it like luggage, and so I don't have to give up a bunch of extra space in the truck to casters. The casters, handles, and latches are all in the lid, so the console tows slightly upside down when using the wheels, but the advantage of this is the bottom plate is only about 3" thick under the mixer when in use. I had them add a 1.75" wide pocket to the right of the board for an IEC power cord, the A&H gooseneck light, and a couple RCA -> 1/8" cables. There's 2" of foam on all 6 sides of the GLD surface, and the lid has a divider in it to keep things from falling out of the pocket. I forget which foam is polyethelene and which is polyester, but this is the closed-cell athletic helmet style, rather than the spongy variety.

I dug out the scale, and the case loaded with board and cabling weighs in at exactly 75 lbs, putting the empty case at just under 40 lbs. That's a hair more than I guessed it would be, but still pretty impressive for a 48X20 mixer in case.

I can't remember if I've told this story here or not, but when I first got the case, the foam was a little tight, and the GLD surface would actually stick in the lid as I lifted it off. I love digital.

That's coroplast, other than the metal corners? I like it for cheap lighting surfaces, is it really durable enough? Wow, learned something new today.

For any application where the weight savings matters, I would say yes. You're not going to put an H3000 in it and put it at the bottom of the semi, but for items that weigh less than 100 lbs or so I have found it to be perfectly adequate. I just had an 88-key keyboard case made in the same fashion, and it worked out really well.

Re: GLD80 Discussion

Recently purchased the GLD80 for our church, actually we installed less than 3 weeks ago as we went from a analog Soundcraft, to the digital and I must say it has been a better transition than we expected but we had a problem with the monitor out on the AR2412 which completely stopped working so we had to send for replacement. Has anyone else had this problem? Or does anyone know what could have caused the component to do such?

I haven't heard of this failure before; probably one of those things... I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Re: GLD80 Discussion

I am learning this desk. Lots to like.

I was assigning inputs to strips and I kept getting things where I didn't want them. Is there any other way to do this other than the drag and drop? I don't understand how what I did got what I got. Maybe I got big fingers?

It seems they changed the way that the assign works a while ago in a firmware update. You used to be able to just tap what you wanted and it would go into the next available fader spot. With my fat fingers it isn't as good anymore. When you try to slide then around they don't always drop where you really want them. There also used to be a trash can to get rid of them to. Now you have to drag them straight up where you might grab something you don't want.

DCAs

The GLD is my first desk with DCAs.

I have been playing a bit with them as I learn the desk preparing for a one day festival next month. I can see assigning groups of similar sources to them so you can adjust volume after the mix is set.

What are other unique or good applications for them?

I have a band with six vocals that harmonize (think 50s do-wop). Once I get the mx settled, it is a pain to boost individuals for solos and get it back so I was thinking of a DCA for each vocal. I could boost, then bring back to a known setting.

Thanks

Assign all the vox FX sends to a DCA, you can turn it down / mute it when the singer is speaking between songs, and obviously you can use it to change the overall FX level.

DCAs also serve as mute groups on the GLD, so I've got all inputs assigned to one DCA that I can mute with my 'panic button' softkey.

I generally like to live on the top layer so what I will do is put groups of inputs that don't often change relative to each other (double-miced piano, drum kit, etc) on lower layers and then assign them to a DCA that lives on the top layer.

Just posted on the A&H GLD forum - supposedly a quote from an A&H email invitation to a webinar:

"GLD Editor lets you configure a GLD digital mixing system before a performance,
check and edit guest engineers’ show files and even mix live from a laptop or
tablet."

I got a similar e-mail... it's billed as an "exclusive preview" of the editor and V1.3 firmware (looks like they'll be released together).
