Anyone done a really long braided sleeving project?

Re: Anyone done a really long braided sleeving project?

Under low load thin power cables over long runs don't suffer problematic voltage drops, but may not be compliant with electrical regs depending on the size of breaker upstream.

To illustrate the problem, imagine a 1200' 14/3 cord has been run and then a fault occurs where the active lead touches the chassis creating a hazard. How long will it take the 120v/20A breaker to trip and eliminate the electrocution hazard? This breaker will never trip!

Now I understand that the proposed run isn't 1200' but some of that distance is cable inside the walls. If an overlength cord isn't long enough to stop a breaker tripping, it still slows the breaker tripping.

This is one of the reasons that the NEC has a voltage drop requirement (although I don't believe it applies to flexible cords)

Re: Anyone done a really long braided sleeving project?

I have my 3 runs of STP cat5e and when I went to buy the 14/3 I ran across a deal on 12/3 that was 20 bucks more for the spool, so I bought that instead.

So now I have 1 12/3 SJ and 3 cat5e STP lines loosely bundled together. I ordered 250 feet of 3/4" braided sleeve and I'm currently waiting for it to arrive. I've got my cabling rolled up on a spool right now and will feed it off the spool and into the sleeve. If my braided sleeve ends up being shorter than 250' when its all done, I'll just shorten the whole thing. I don't think I'll need 250' anywhere I play, but if you're gonna build it, build it right...

I'll try and take some pics as this thing goes together. Should have the sleeve in a day or two...
