I was just cruising NSL today and saw a new Chauvet light that might interest you.The ColorRail seems to have a similar footprint that the colorstrip does, but has full RGB control over 8 pixels. The best part is that it's well under 200 bucks at NSL!
I did look at the DMX chart as well and it seems that the channels are laid out in a workable manner. You select the mode on the fixture (1,2, or 8 pixels) and then you address it how you want. Channel 1 is a master dimmer, channel 26 is a strobe speed. Channels 2-25 are RGB for each pixel.
