Re: Clothing...

Dickies the heavy duty trousers, uniform shorts, and collared shirts.

The shirts are easy to pick up extras on the road (Walmart)

Re: Clothing...

I've found the Carharrt clothing to fit a bit better than the Dickies stuff, but build quality is similar (if not slightly better). I've also had good luck with BDU pants in the 65/35 polyester-cotton blend and the 50/50 nylon-cotton blend (the 100% cotton ones don't last at all, and the 60/40 cotton/poly doesn't last as well either).

Re: Clothing...

In my case, I find myself very much enjoying Lee carpenter jeans - the darker blue. They're a little heavy but very comfortable for most of what I do when it's in a theatrical environment - the hammer loop has so many uses.

Glad to hear about Dickies and the NZ brand for when I have money.

Black 5.11 Tactical pants and shorts: a bit pricey but very comfortable and lots of pockets and attach points. Plain black polo shirts or short- or long-sleeved button-down collar shirts. Black suit, shirt and tie if necessary. And yes, a tux but mercifully rarely.

Re: Clothing...

I have always work Carharrt, but for shirts have recently gotten into Royal Robbins and Kuhl. They deal a lot better with those hot days. Expensive though.

Interestingly enough, neither one of those brands has shirts that fit my build properly. There are other, similar, brands that do, however.

The big takeaway here is that there are many brands that make a quality product (and many that make products similar to each other). But fit will vary across the brands, so it's worth trying a few options to see what's best for you.

I don't think anyone makes shirts these days that the length of the tails match the length of the sleeves.

If I get a shirt long enough to stay tucked in, the sleeves go halfway down my hands. If I get a shirt with the proper cuff length, no chance they stay tucked in.

I usually wear shirt stays with my dress clothes but that is a little extreme for a casual/work shirt.

The Dickies I get are hemmed straight on the bottom so they look like they are meant to be untucked which is how I tend to wear them.

Edit- if you are looking for a brand of extreme wear that is us based check out mountain hardware.

Re: Clothing...

Check out these folks for PERHAPS a better fit.

It seems like since the manufacturing has moved outside the US that the commonly available stuff is "shirt-shaped" rather than a real shirt. I've had to send back so much stuff that looked like clothing but felt like a clothing-shaped bag, formless and ill-fitting.

Agreed. Most of my daily wardrobe is now either black Ballroom Jeans or black "Middle Management Flat-Front Chinos". Their "Armachillo" shirts are fantastic for summer festival work. All of it is very well constructed and so far I haven't had a single disappointment or failure.

The black Ballroom Jeans don't hold their dye as well as I'd like, but at least they fade evenly across the fabric so when faded they don't look worn out.

A related annoyance is ever-shrinking pocket size. I've bought shirts (on-line) that were otherwise good, but the pockets were so small that a standard pen wouldn't fit inside - let alone a smart phone, sunglasses, pack of gum, etc..
