How to mic an Oboe and Clarinet

Re: How to mic an Oboe and Clarinet

Audix too.

I use SM86 or SM58 typically anymore, although I used a Crown CM700 sdc for a long time(great sound, just easier in pub gigs to use the first two).

Ivan, oboe and bassoon may have been used in war to scare the enemy, but we all know who the champ is for that...

Hi, John, I saw where you mentioned the Crown CM700 microphone. We own, I think, 47 or 48 CM700s and I use them on orchestras and choirs.

Crown stopped making this mic and I can't see a suitable substitute in the AKG line (I'm open to suggestions, however).

Have you found a suitable substitute for the CM700, or have had to? We own several Audix ADX-51s and while I haven't needed to actually compare them side-by-side yet, I think the Audix might be the substitute I'm looking for. We have plenty of CM700s for the foreseeable future, but I'd like to have a substitute in mind, should the need arise

Any thoughts?

Thanx,
Geri O

Well, I only own four. I feel inadequate. ;>)

Haven't looked in the AKG lines either, my other condenser use tend to be Shure KSM 137 or 141, and occasionally the KSM 27 or 32.

I should do a side by side of a 137 and CM700 sometime.

Best regards,

John

Geri....

I think the most often mentioned SDC for orchestral work is probably the AT Pro37. I know the Minnesota Orchestra has dozens of them for outdoor use.

I'm like John in that I have my SDC's in multiples of 6 or fewer. My favorites have been the KSM137's.

Re: How to mic an Oboe and Clarinet

Hi All

Just curious to know how you might mic an oboe and clarinet in a orchestra pit situation for a musical.

We are using Electric drums and the guitars are in Iso Cabs and everybody is using headphones for monitoring so the pit noise will be just things like trumpets other wind instruments.

This is for Cats if that makes a difference.

Cheers Dave

We often use a DPA 4011 or DPA 4021. For flute, a boom arm over the stand, high enough to clear music and page turns. Point it at the player's chin. We're having great success right now with a DPA 4011 for an oboe/english horn chair. It's on a boom arm coming over the stand from the players left. Pointed about 4-6" below the reed. I usually clamp clarinet mics under the music stand and point them about 6" above the bell.

As a side note, we just sat a 20 piece /50 input orchestra for a Broadway show and I think I used a total of 5 mic stands. Everything else is clamped or mounted on a flange fastened to the ceiling or walls.

You're going to have to post some pictures of this. I'm assuming that by ceiling, you are not talking about the ceiling of the theatre, over the open part of the orchestra pit...

We joked about tailing down our Schoeps area mics from the center cluster truss but no, I'm referring to the underside of the show deck/apron extension.

Re: How to mic an Oboe and Clarinet

I guess I've arrived in some small way 'cause I've done several events with small orchestras. Typical event may have several rock type bands and a few odds and ends like large herds of similar shaped instruments. We had all the woodwind types set up on the ground in front of the stage because it was too small for the 50 something members to all fit. I used 3 Audix VX5's pointed at the different groupings of players like strings - flutes-n-clarenets - various saxes and I used the usual drum mics etc. My method is to never use monitors for that kind of thing. (I take that back - the bass fiddle was in the side fill a little) I always enjoy these things when they all hit together for the big parts :D~:-D~
