I'm new to this and was wondering about these products shown in sound forums?

Greetings in advance.

I was hoping for some clarification and expertise. I read this article is soundforums and I am not familiar with the equipment.

http://soundforums.net/hub/2069-lec...medium%94-theresa-caputo-make-connection.html

In the photo, I see one earset ear piece (top piece on box) for communication (attached to transmitter), an earset mic (attached to transmitter) and four cordless mics.

Please advise.

Equipment list in the article:

four Lectrosonics HH handheld transmitters outfitted with Shure SM58 capsules plus two SMQV super miniature beltpack transmitters for use with Countryman E6 microphones.

The gear on the left side of the case is presumably not comms equipment but rather the two beltpack transmitters with Countryman E6 headset mics attached.

I'm not really sure what else to add here... looks from the article that both flavours of transmitter in the picture work with with the same receiver modules.

Those are Lectrosonics, as the article says. The hand helds are HH transmitters with SM58 capsules, and the body packs are SMQV units with Countryman E6 microphones. Anything else you'd like to know?

Re: I'm new to this and was wondering about these products shown in sound forums?

The ear pieces (both are the same type) combined with the small transmitters are just a different form factor of a wireless microphone. Instead of a microphone capsule (the silver ball) mounted on a handheld wireless transmitter (the black tube thing) you have a miniature microphone capsule attached to a boom which goes around the ear. The wireless transmitter in this case is the small silver box that the earset is connected to.
So just two form factors of basically the same thing for different usages.
All of these need a wireless receiver (one for each transmitter) to work.

Hope I did not misunderstand your questions and answered in a too simple way...

Re: I'm new to this and was wondering about these products shown in sound forums?

Thank you all for the replies.

I thought the top left piece above top transmitter (appears to be an ear bud) was an ear piece for ...well, hearing commands from off stage. LOL.

Is it possible it is an ear bud for insertion to hear from a producer etc off stage?

Thanks again...

That's definitely a microphone, not an ear bud. The microphone element is quite small so I would say the one in the picture above likely has a windscreen on it.

Detailed info on the E6 microphone here...

Yes. It's called an iem, which stands for in ear monitor. (Or foldback, in-ear, squawk box, bitching betty, or a thousand other names.)

It would use an entirely different wireless transmitter-receiver setup. Popular ones are made by Sennheiser (the IEMG3), Shure (the P9), and even Lectrosonics (the Quadra).

Re: I'm new to this and was wondering about these products shown in sound forums?

So, an IEM can also be used for commands off stage. E.g., a producer or stage hand can send commands to the entertainer through the headset (ear piece)?

Re: I'm new to this and was wondering about these products shown in sound forums?

Yes, through a talkback mic or something of the sort, the producer could talk to the entertainer in his "ears", just like talking to someone on stage through monitors.

Wow, this is the right place to get answers. :)

So, it is possible to have a mic that works as an ear piece too? When I say ear piece, I mean a device to hear from a person off stage. Wow. Interesting. The device (s) in photo can be such device?

Thanks.

Re: I'm new to this and was wondering about these products shown in sound forums?

As far as i know, there is not a combination wireless microphone transmitter / in ear monitor (iem) receiver. The entertainer would need 1 beltpack which is a microphone transmitter and a separate pack which would be the iem receiver. Hope that makes sense. Your scenario would require 2 separate devices.

No. The equipment in the picture does not work in this manner. Jeff Carter and Marcus B. have correctly identified the equipment as being Countryman E6 "earset microphones" and Lectrosonics transmitters. An "earset mic" gets its name because of the way it is worn, not because it puts sound into the performer's ear.

Another name for earpieces used by talent is "IFB" for Interruptable Fold Back. This is what TV newsreaders wear. In normal running of the show, they get program foldback (the audio going on-air). The director or producer can interrupt that program mix with a microphone and give the talent instructions or information like "we lost the remote from the bank robbery, skipping to the next story" or to receive cues "coming to you in 3 -2 -1".

Is your curiosity about equipment relevant to the talent discussed in the advertising?

Re: I'm new to this and was wondering about these products shown in sound forums?

Talent? Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean and please elaborate for a better understanding. :)

My curiosity is seeking information from the experts and this is why I am here. I am attempting to better understand the equipment and how it works. You have explained it in detail about the name. When I read mic, I (being a layman) thought it was a mic only and did not know a person "off stage" (a default description) had the ability too (also) speak into the equipment as you just described ("we lost the remote from the bank robbery, skipping to the next story" or to receive cues "coming to you in 3 -2 -1".).

Again, I am only attempting to seek answer on how this equipment works.

Thanks in advance.

Re: I'm new to this and was wondering about these products shown in sound forums?

Ron, I am going to make a bit of leap here and say that I think you are still misunderstanding what is being explained in this thread. I base this on your last comment.

What others in this thread have tried to point out is that, in fact, what is pictured in your OP is two headworn microphones, two belt pack or body pack microphones, and four handheld microphones.

There are *no* IEM earbuds, wireless earpieces, or receiver packs, IFBs, or the like are pictured above. The equipment pictured above can NOT be used to receive any kind of signals, and there are no earpieces pictured.

Lectrosonics (and other companies) DO make IEM and IFB products that allow talent to listen to a signal. But they are not pictured here. On a related note, I have seen combination headset or earset microphones with an integral earpiece advertised, but now I can't find them with a web search - maybe they didn't survive in the market.

Re: I'm new to this and was wondering about these products shown in sound forums?

Revolabs has some 2-way wireless mic type products. But, I'm not sure they are intended for broadcast or large scale use. More like boardroom teleconference kind of stuff.

The leap is appreciated and now I understand.

In addition, I will "fess" up and explain my real reasons for being here.

Often entertainers (e.g., Peter Popoff, Sally Morgan) who are attempting to scam the audience by using wireless (or otherwise) ear pieces for communication from backstage.

Pastor (rolling my eyes) Peter Popoff was caught receiving information from his wife (who was backstage). This information was about revival attendees from his wife via an in-ear receiver. Popoff routinely and accurately stated the home addresses and specific illnesses of his audience members, a feat many believed was due to divine revelation and "God-given ability".[10] In 1986 when members of CSICOP reported that Popoff was using a radio to receive messages, Popoff denied it and said the messages came from God.[11] At the time of his popularity, skeptic groups across the United States printed and handed out pamphlets explaining how Popoff's feats could be done.[2] Popoff would tell his audience that the pamphlets were "tools of the devil".[2]

Here, Medium Sally Morgan was caught (by her own staff) wearing an ear piece for communication and she denied it even after witnesses came forward.

  1. Expertise! I need the experts right here to help me understand the equipment and this is great place to start.
  2. Jeff James is the Technical Director for Theresa Caputo’s "LIVE The Experience" and I am attempting to discredit her.
It's my personal opinion that Theresa Caputo is taking advantage of those who are grieving and for accuracy, she may be using an ear piece for communication from a person off stage.

Because many purchase tickets to her live performance with credit cards, it's FACT personal information (minus CC numbers) are given to the promoter and this information is handed over over to her staff for research on various selected targets.

Simply meaning, information is given to her in advance.

Caputo is scamming people and I am attempting to prove my hypothesis.

I came here knowing that I would find educated and good people to help with my cause; however, I needed to demonstrate knowledge first.

Thanks.

Re: I'm new to this and was wondering about these products shown in sound forums?

Caputo was just here at our Performing Arts Center, but I didn't work the show as I had another gig already scheduled. I'll ask a couple of local crew if they saw anything. It's possible they had to sign non-disclosure agreements...

Ron...

Politicians are self-serving liars. Pass it on.

You guys are are awesome!

NDA, I would imagine; however, with today's internet, something can be leaked anonymously and without legal action.

IMO, she is a blood sucking leech ..a grief vampire who preys on those who are MOST vulnerable (including children) and it's heart wrenching to see a child be told that the child's deceased parent is communicating with Caputo.

Someone at sometime will come forward and it's just a matter of time and all hell will break lose.

Thanks...:)

Even if I have a witness who says "I saw her with an earbud/IEM/IFB earpiece" we can't prove what she was hearing. They record this for TV, so her getting an IFB feed from the director is certainly a possibility. What we don't know is what *might* said to her. I agree that the presence of such hardware would raise questions.

The omission of Lectrosonics IFB gear in the press release can mean several things: that Caputo does not use IFB or does not use Lectro's IFB product, or that her TD is not endorsing the IFB products... or they simply don't talk about it. ;)
