NAMM 2012 Reports and Photos

Re: NAMM 2012 Reports and Photos

Shure is showing the ULX-D digital wireless system....

"Up to 14 ULX-D systems can operate in one six MHz TV channel, making it easy to use, even in highly congested urban areas where open TV channels can be scarce. For applications where secure transmission is required during confidential meetings, the ULX-D system includes Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) 256-bit encryption for privacy.

While audio and RF quality are always paramount, wireless users are often frustrated by something more mundane: battery management. Based on the technology used in Shure’s Axient wireless system, the SB900 Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery pack provides ULX-D transmitters with up to 12 hours of performance time. Transmitters and receivers display remaining battery life in hours and minutes, accurate to within 15 minutes. "

I stopped by the booth to see these. They really stepped up on the ULX ( I have never been a fan of that line ). More frequencies to choose from than UHF R, and the transmitters are actually all metal and do not feel cheap. I will take pictures on Sat if I go back to the show.

Besides using the rechargeables the new ULXD transmitters will accept AAs. They have a nice charging rack that will charge bodypacks, handhelds or spare battery packs interchangeably. Nice systems.

Weird, Bennet and I have traded places. Check our the shirt.
Also, judging by his expression he might be having an allergic reaction to the off brand speakers.

The other picture is one of the guys from the booth across from us has grabbed a set and is jamming without prior consent, mid song, with the booth next to us. It was very cool. Almost a moment.

Yes, Hall E. I was hoping to see you here.

it is a lot better (less cacophonous) than last time I was here.

Grasshoppa cleans up well... While a little overdressed for a NAMM show (nice suit BTW). You only have one chance to make a first impression, so over is better than under (IMO). He can break out the traditional garb for later shows when his new customers know him better.

I approve, while for the record, I managed to go 6+ decades never owning a proper suit, and don't plan to break my streak now... I wonder if you can rent a tux to be buried in. :-). That way at least the rental guy will miss you when your gone..

The X32 seems to have gained iPod/iPhone integration.

Here is a video of the X32 and their digital snake product. The digital snake box is supposedly $699.

What feature I thought was cool is that you can use the AES50 port on the X32 to share the output to additional AES50 mixers. So no need for a split snake, simply run a Cat5 cable to the additional desk(s). This type of thing making its way down into Prosumer level consoles is interesting. $5K for a PAIR of 32ch consoles without the need for a $1500ish analog split snake will be hard to resist for many if they can minimize the failure rate.
