Non X32 Digital Mixer Questions

Re: Non X32 Digital Mixer Questions

So how come a thread entitled "Non-X32 Digital Mixer Questions" has so many posts about X32's? I know some of you are excited about the desk, but there are other options out there too.

Because the OP unnecessarily put it in the thread topic? Kind of baiting.

Baiting? Seriously?

Quoted form the OP
(one of the big reasons I'm not including the X32 in this search - I'm afraid that it will immediately be maxed out on inputs and we'll be facing the same issues we already are having come Christmas when we have a big production supported by a full band)

I know this is the JV part of the forum... but it seems like there is a growing contingent of people who are just waiting for someone... anyone, to mention anything about any digital mixer, digital snake or recording rig, so they can jump up and proclaim the X32 to be the answer to everything.

In this case, the console CLEARLY does not meet his current needs or future needs.... and he even specified a very fair reason why he isn't looking at them... but still he gets replies suggesting to string two of them together! How about the post recently from the local provider who wanted some info about a digital snake system for the LS9 he already owns and makes good ROI on through cross-rentals... what replies did he get? He was told to get rid of his LS9, and replace it with one or more X32 consoles... since they are cheaper, they are clearly the answer to his inquiry.

I have no feelings one way or the other about the actual X32 console... it's seemingly a great deal for a great feature set... but stop trying to shove it down everyones throat just because you decided that it was right for you! We all know they exist... we know what they cost and we know what they can do. Pointing them out as the answer to every single freaking question, including the ones that specifically suggest they are not interested, is starting to get OLD in a hurry... IMO.

I think that may be a bit paranoid but....

....I totally agree for this thread.

This, however, is bullshit.

You need to reread that thread.

1. The OP didn't own LS9's.
2. The OP was the first one to bring up the X32 as the PROBABLE consoles he was going to buy.
3. Another poster and I just replied saying that EVEN if the price were the same, for his application (and others), we would both prefer the X32 over the LS9.

Sorry Mike... I was reffering to a post on the other pro audio forum there...

I'm a weekend warrior who owns an LS9. I've been carrying a 40 channel copper snake for the last few years which I really have no problems with at all. I like that it easily interfaces with any console I could choose to rent and I can crossrent it to other companies. It does the job.

I dig your jump to conclusions mat though...

Here's the link... so you can read what I was talking about before you jumped to an incorrect conclusion. It took until the fourth/fifth posts (including the OP) to suggest he dump his LS9 and look at the X32 as a replacement.

Hoisted by my own petard!

I'll leave my post up as evidence to my shame.

I'm sure you can understand my confusion.

My apologies!

Re: Non X32 Digital Mixer Questions

Thanks for the info everyone.

As of now the GLD is the recommendation I'm submitting because it does everything I need minus the ability to expand to beyond 48 inputs, which is still pretty darn good. Any question I can ask myself as to what would be a downside to this console cannot be answered with a negative, and now that includes the question "is there a better option". Seems like a no. Right now we're working on getting a demo to try for a Sunday.

Looking at 10 years down the road we will hopefully be at a point of just building a new and much larger space, in which time I'll fight for a budget that accordingly meets the needs of a larger space and the larger groups it can accommodate.

The GLD is a really nice desk. Fun to mix on.

No shame Mike... we're all just talking here right.... right!?
I obviously should have been a bit more clear as to what I was referencing... and maybe shouldn't be cross-referencing the two forums. I do see a LOT of people cross posting the same threads on the two forums, perhaps the resulting deja vu has now come full circle.

Enjoy! My church swapped out a Spirit Live 4 2 for a GLD in September. So far we're loving it, though I wish A&H would hurry up and add an offline editor (the iPad app is coming very soon, but no word on an offline editor yet, unfortunately).

In some ways I'm as excited to do away with the Spirit as I am for the new board. Those things are right at the top of my NO list.

At one point, I was carrying a Spirit Live 4 (32 Channel) with two PSUs and a full rack of outboard, gigging with a van that had no ramp, without a helper. My back still hurts over 10 years later... but apparently it sounded THAT much better then the Mackie 24.4 I had before, that I justified the ridiculous wrestling match that took place trying to get it back in the van each night.
I wish I had kept some sort of record of all the dopey gear choices I made over the years... it would be entertaining to look back and see what I was really thinking at the time of some purchase decisions. I've still got a soft spot for that big old Spirit board

My shinning moment was the purchase of a Soundcraft SM16 - 48CH.... on the first gig, it took a forklift to put it on deck. That was an eye opener - wasn't sorry to see that sell.

My first gig as a stage hand involved getting a Soundcraft SM24 up onto a 5' stage... without a fork truck. Made me seriously question my employment that day...

My GLD surface in its case (with corrugated plastic for panels instead of plywood) weighs 65-70lbs. I'm laughing at you all while I'm sitting here not at the chiropractor. :)

Consider that was in 1995 and there were another 7 guys helping... we had to wait until there were a pair of truck ramps free. We took half the drum riser and used it for a landing, putting a ramp from the stage to the landing, and the other ramp from the landing to the arena floor. A fork truck would have been faster and easier, but the promoter didn't pay for the fork truck rental.

Did your GLD come with a Flux Capacitor option card? I don't think anyone would have turned you down 10+ years ago, if you had shown up with a lightweight, affordable and capable digital package...

I was so done with lifting the Spirit console around that I picked up a Soundcraft Digital 328... first gig was in a glass atrium with full sun outside... couldn't see a damn thing. Spent most of the gig with a towel over the console, ducking under the towel to see what the LED pots were doing... STRIKE TWO.

FYI... chiropractors are for amateurs... when you really screw yourself up a few times, you gotta invest in the full inversion table for home use. Best piece of gear I currently own 8)~8-)~

Re: Non X32 Digital Mixer Questions

Yeah... the boots are certainly for the more adventurous customers.
I lived alone when I first made the purchase, and was determined not to get stranded upside-down... especially not in a pair of tighty-whities!!

The full on machine is only around $400 (maybe cheaper now) and it really has been worth every bit of the price. After a long day at a convention center or other hard floor gig, there is nothing better then hanging upside down and getting everything stretched out and relaxed.

The real secret bonus to inversion... 10 mins upside-down will cure even the most heinous headache.

Re: Non X32 Digital Mixer Questions

If I were to upgrade today, it would be a tossup between the new Studiolive 32.4.2 or the GLD. I have a SL24.4.2 and a 16.0.2 for small gigs so I'm really used to the workflow. The GLD is interesting and I'm looking forward to seeing the iPad app.

I just can't get past the brand.

?? A&H? Is this based on any recent experience?

Re: Non X32 Digital Mixer Questions

Presonus is a more reputable brand than A&H?

Not knocking Presonus - they have some great products that I like - but I don't think I'd agree with that statement.

As for the new Studiolive - well, I have a friend with one in his studio and I think it's phenomenal for what he's doing. Live environment wise.. ehh. If they made it with flying faders, even if it meant doubling the cost, I'd be interested. I just don't get why they are so hung up on NOT adding those.

In this case though my thoughts on the faders are a non-issue because even the big new one doesn't have enough channels.
