Rants from guitar player about sound guys

Re: Rants from guitar player about sound guys

No problem. I'd ask if you could turn it down and explain that this isn't Madison Square Gardens. I'd also point out that right or wrong, the stage area faces the bar and the bartenders need to be able to hear drink orders. If it didn't come down, I'm not here to argue. I'd put up with your shit for the night. I'd shake your hand, say "great show" and I'd smile and wave as you leave.

Then your band would be put on the "don't bring back" list, and I would never see your face again.

Problem solved.

A few years ago I had small band, lead guy played a very nice Gibson hollow body acoustic electric. He insisted I take his line after his count'em THREE various model Fishman pre amp pedals, yes one feeding the next and so on. What he had coming out of his amp and what I had coming to me sounded like a PA with only the horns turned on and all of them with shattered diaphragms!
It really was that bad all the while he was bragging about his pedals and his tone!

I think I mixed that guy last month.
I mix this band a few times a year, they are OK players, but the one guitarist is a gear pig and likes to chew your ear off about his newest effect or whatever. His sound is horrible and too loud, which is too bad because his gear is actually good stuff, just mis-utilized.

Everybody has mixed "that guy" at one time or another!

Yep. I had a bass player with an 8-space rack of effects. "Bypass" was the best sounding.

I had a kid in my high school that was really excited about his new delay pedal at the talent show. I tried to talk him out of it, but he refused. Soundcheck rolled by, and not ten seconds after we finished he said, "Well that sounded like total horse shit," and literally chucked the thing in the trash.

Good man.
