Re: Subs @ 30 for an install

So what became of your search for the low notes? Did you get to demo the Danley product? There are a few of the "21 Sub Engines" somewhere in New York but very few Chimera 21's out in the wild. You would probably have to spend a day in St. Pete FL to hear them.

The TH118 came, consensus was the single TH118 kept up with 4 2x18 "subs". Planning on a pair. I got 10dB more output @ 40 and 15 dB more @ 30 than the house boxes, and this was with a 24dB/octave L-R filter low pass @ 75 to match amplitude @ 100 of the current boxes. High pass @ 25Hz, 24db/octave L-R. Very clean, low, and loud in a small package.

Did you take any measurements?

Very nice :) Somebody please warn me when one of these things comes rumbling through my area! Unfortunately I've never seen any Danley product anywhere - although I have to admit that I live under a pretty big rock down here. So if there are any sound companies that do public events in my area please try to remember to notify me when these beasts will be out in the wild - thanks.

I think there are a good number in various churches in Fla. The only sound "company" I am aware of is sound scapes- Langston Hollands company. He has 8 and does some pretty large outdoor shows with just the 8.

Re: Subs @ 30 for an install

Ivan has Danley given any thought to a TH121? Not half of a TH221 but something with a higher 30hz corner?

I can't speak for Danley, but I'd be surprised if it hadn't crossed their mind.

In general, Danley makes subs based on output and low frequency corner, with many other variables thrown in; they don't focus on driver diameter like many others do. Thus, rather than start with a single 21" (or whatever), I'm betting they start with "xxx dB SPL down to xx Hz in _________ form factor/dimensions". Sometimes it happens to utilize one or more 21" drivers, sometimes 18", sometimes 12", etc. Since there is no single 21", it's a reasonable bet that the size/output/corner/etc is better suited to some other quantity of some other driver size. Ivan will probably chime in, this is just my educated guess.

You hit the nail on the head. It is not so much the tool-but the job that needs to be done-ie the design target.

The 3 Danley cabinets that go the lowest have our smallest drivers-8 and 12". Not that we could not use other drivers with different results-but on any design-we start with a target-then try to hit that target.

The driver chosen is the one that fits a particular bill. Sometimes it is physical height-sometime power/SPL/sensitivity capacity and so forth Different cabinets are designed with different goals in mind. It is NOT about selling a particular configuration that is "popular". If it was-then the Danley lineup would look very different.

Re: Subs @ 30 for an install

Well I sort of figured that guys. You start with a product that needs developed (bandwidth, cost, form factor, etc.) and work towards that and let it guide how you arrive at the destination. The reverse of " Hey I'm going to buy these components and then I guess we'll make some product out of it."

I guess I was looking for a little insight as to whether it had been considered yet and what if anything killed it or turned out to be the better option? The TH412 is more than twice the size of the TH115/118 for example.

Re: Subs @ 30 for an install

Rather than start a new thread I thought I would glom on here with the latest low notes from the Ramsdell folks. It took a while but finally someone made the plunge. Most major sound companies won't deviate from the typical rider prescribed names so this is kind of a big deal that Greg at Mojoe down in Bradenton made a break from convention and now owns 20 of the new improved neo 21" Ramsdell Sub Engines!!! They got their trial by fire at Pepsi Gulf Coast Jam 2015 in Panama City Beach Florida with crowds 20,000+ and the current crop of top country acts. The FOH hang was 15 Vertex 4889 per side. Back at the FOH board they put up a video screen for those directly in back and hung 12 of the smaller Ramsdell LA112 as a delay fill. The 20 sub engines were powered Crown iTechs - 2800 watts rms per side at 8 ohms 1 sub per side for a total of 56,000 watts into the 20 subs!!! (sorry those kind of figures give me wood) Anyway - the various sound engineers for all the groups seemed to have nice things to say about the rig. If anyone here was at the event or knows someone that mixed the event please add your 2 cents worth here about the subs. Here's a pic I snagged before they picked them up >>> https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10206153066520079&l=a9a5b77067

Re: Subs @ 30 for an install

Gene,

If Ramsdell would like to advertise on this site Dave and I would appreciate it if they'd just buy some ad space. I don't see what this has to do with the thread, especially almost exactly three years later. I'm going to close the thread, please start a new one if you'd lie to promote Ramsdell.
