This years halftime "show"

Re: This years halftime "show"

FLAME SUIT ON

OK let's say it is all about "the show".

Then why even have somebody there who is not going to perform?

Why not just play music and show the video and lights?-like the Pink floyd lazer show?

If we are going to not care if it is live or not-then why have a mic on the "singer"? By putting a mic on them it says to me "I am trying to fool you and I hope you "believe" what you are seeing is real". I am sure most of the audience (in person and on TV believe what they saw was an actual "performance"-pity.

OK- let's take it to another extreme. You can have the performance WITHOUT the lights. But why don't we just have the lights and video without the MUSIC? How entertaining is that?

So let's say you have a live band for the half time "show". ie like in years past where you actually saw people playing (or at least pretending to play). If they did it live-then you have a"show".

If they are just going to lip sync-then why not just play music thorough the PA and it becomes "background music".

I wonder how many people would complain if they just played tracks (with no body on stage) at the same level the "show" was at? I bet a bunch. But let somebody hold a mic in front of their face and now the level is fine? I'm confused.

Call me old fashioned-but I prefer LIVE music to lip synced "dancing"-no matter how good the video and lighting is.

Rant off.

Re: This years halftime "show"

I think the definition of what we, with our high standards and musical experience, would call a "show" differs markedly from what the TV watching public considers a show.

true. and i also agree with ivan that a musical performance with no musical performance is not a musical performance [see what i did there?].

but oddly, some of this is also cultural. i worked in ukraine for 4 months a couple of years ago doing a political campaign and part of that was working sound for many 'national level' ukrainian and russian musical acts at fairly large events[10k+]. i was shocked to learn that in that country it is the established 'norm' to lip-sync performances to a track. in fact, my ukrainian friends were quite surprised to learn that we find that deplorable in the U.S. it was kind of entertaining to work with 'BEs' who would be traveling with the artists and whose sole responsibility was to play the track at the right time and make sure the artist's mic was turned on between songs so they could give a 'shout out' to the crowd. weird, but true.

Hello,

For a bunch of veterans of the Entertainment business... I really don't understand what all the fuss is about..?

I don't ever remember this Half-time performance as being billed as a "musical performance"...

Also, the idea of Lip syncing a "performance" has been around at least as long as there have been Televison Shows.
The American Bandstand and Soul Train have had most if not all, Lip Sync'd performances. The Midnight Special, and Don Kirshner's (who's son was the Producer of many recent past Half-time events) shows, had many Lip sync'd performances. Many of the Grammy award Performances have been Lip Sync'd.

And, probably all of the Sing/Dance preformance acts have Lip sync'd shows....Britney, Christina, Katy, Beyonce', Madonna, Keisha, etc.... and on back to the Boy Bands of the 1990s..

Good thing success isn't measured by what the soundguys think.

Was the crowd happy? I think so.

Did everyone get paid? Probably...

Did the NFL and whoever makes money from halftime advertisements make their money? I'm sure they did.

Did all the gear work? It seemed to.

So, what's to complain about?

PS - It's not like your sound company would turn down that gig because you 'don't like it'...

I always thought it would be great if they did football stuff for halftime. You could have just as big a spectacle, but honor some Hall of Famers, some players that are still living and some gone. Heck i used to enjoy the Punt Pass and Kick competition they used to do. Maybe highlight some of the players charitable efforts, to increase some donations for good. Im mean if all it is, is a circus with a different animal every year, why not just bring in Barnum and Bailey.

Hello,

They do hand out awards for those Players that do charitable work, and Life-time achievement awards, etc.....but, during the Pre-Game activities directly before the coin toss. Sometimes it's televised, sometimes not.... depends on your local TV Station/Cable Channel.

The Punt, Pass and Kick competition for Grade School, Middle School and High School seems to have been moved to the Off-Sight NFL Event, the days leading up to the actual game. There, the Parents and Kids can meet the Players and sometimes have their photos taken together.

In the days leading up to the Super Bowl, there are a lot of events that donate the proceeds to charity...most all of the Corporate sponsor planned parties... like the booze, beer, and fashion Companies. The Super Bowl generally brings in a lot of Money for the Host city... and it does trickle down..

I heard lots of ads that said "Performing at halftime-Madonna". Not Dancing at halftime.

I recently bought a bunch of the Midnight special DVD's. I have not watched all of them-but the only song I have seen that was lip synced was by Journey. Everything else has been live. So I would say that percentage wise (from what I own and have seen) the midnight special lip syncs were on the order of 1%.

Now maybe what I bought was just the live ones-but that is all I have to judge whether or not they were lip synced-I don't remember that well of the actual "on air" performances.

Bandstand and soul train totally agreed. And I always hated it-even back then. But I watched anyway.

Regarding this years halftime show - I missed it and still haven't bothered to check it out on YouTube. Let's take a vote on your favorite halftime show. I say the greatest halftime performance of all time was Prince with the FAMU horns for a variety of reasons. I also say that this year's "finger" was planned and just a variation on the Janet Jackson "mishap".

I'm with you on both counts, Gene. I watched Prince's guitar solo at his induction into the R&R Hall of Fame the other day...sent chills up my spine.

Re: This years halftime "show"

No one goes to the Superbowl for the music.

The Super Bowl XXVII halftime with Michael Jackson had a significantly higher TV share than the game and also this year's which was also viewed by more than watched the game. I am not sure any of the stadium fans came for her, but on TV they did. Too bad the on air mix was so bad which is unforgivable since it was most likely ALL track.
