Whats in your mic box and what your favorite?

Re: Whats in your mic box and what your favorite?

2x Optogates for people that deserve them.

Lee, How do you like those Optogates? How much do they cost?

My mics are few, mostly from a drumming perspective:

1 Shure SM57 (had to keep one, sold the rest)

5 Audix i5 (replaced all my other SM57s)

1 Shure Beta 56 (mostly for snare)

1 Audix D6 (primary kick mic, replaced an AKG D12E)

1 ATM Pro25 (backup kick mic, alright bass, too cheap to pass up)

3 EWI C61/300C pencil condensers (hiHats/OH)(Actually my favorites out of what I own)

1 Crown CM311A (drummer vocal)

2 CAD SA1000 (alright vocals, had 3, gave one away to my daughter, CAD made for Sam Ash)

3 Behringer XM8500 (bought as throwaways, fair mic with a nice clip & case ;>)

1 Nady DK-Duo wireless mic pair (cheapest wireless that works, DJ use only)

1 Radio Shack Sennheiser 604 copy (had 4, the others crapped)

1 Behringer ECM8000 measurement mic

Others used in the band & occasional sound gigs, owned by my ''partner'':

3 Shure SM58

2 Shure SM57

2 Shure Beta 58

2 Shure Beta 87

While some might make fun of those Behringer XM8500 and those cheap Sam Ash branded CADs, they pulled our bacon out of the fire at one gig where my partner's mic case was left behind at his Dad's after a night before family gig. Lucky I had most ALL my mics with me that night, in an SKB12 and a Gator GM15. I like the GM15 better than the SKB12 but the SKB has double the cable space and plenty of room for accessories and DIs. EWI didn't have mic cases when I got these ;>(

Re: Whats in your mic box and what your favorite?

1-PR35

1-PR22

1-C1000S

Re: Whats in your mic box and what your favorite?

I still don't own gear so I'll just go down the actual input list, per usual. We have at least one spare for every mic type we carry and in the case of the lavs we probably carry at least 40 spare DPA 4061s in usable condition.

I think I'm on a new show since the last time we did this. If not, I know I'm on a different site. Cheers, all.

Re: Whats in your mic box and what your favorite?

I usually bring every mic I have to avoid being short. It's in a small 10 space rack I call it the miniposer...

I have a PR22 which I am trying on snare these days, and I have a PR35 I use for my own vocal in my band, and I LOVE it. I bought a second one to use in my production kit for a lead vocal for this season - I'll probably be switching over to them for all vocals once the season starts.

Somthing else I have to purchase are some ''real'' hat + OH mics.

SM 81's or SEN 914's something of the like

Shane, Are those BAR codes stickers I see on all your mics? Is this for inventory or can you scan into a system if you say rent or only pack a few for a gig?

Re: Whats in your mic box and what your favorite?

Hi Jon - yes they are barcode stickers, but I do not have a system in which to track them yet. They are more of a visual derterant to the masses who might try to pocket one. Obviously it assists when sorting out if someone has brought their own vocal mic, or if I have new labour around. it's avoids the inevitable ''is this yours?'', ''how bout this one''...

It has my company name and number under neath - again if one gets lost. I've actually started to laser engrave my mics with my logo. If you check out sm58 , 5th from the left, you'll see my logo burned onto the body of the mic. They have a nice 80K machine here at my day job that does a fine job of direct part marking

whatever you want.

Does a nice job on rack panels too

Shane, Nice! Keeps the honest people honest and gives the thief second thoughts. Also nice having access to a nice engraver. Here's hoping the owners are okay with you using it for your stuff.

I always have a good time here. Scott always treats me right and Jimmy Mac appreciates our short cue list on the deck, as always.

This room gets a bad rap for acoustics, apparently after some changes in the 1950s and '60s. That may be true for opera, but for our shows it's pretty great.

Are you in town? I've got a jump seat at the console if you want to swing by tonight.

Re: Whats in your mic box and what your favorite?

Kick - Sennheiser MD421. I also have an AKG D112 but I only use it if I have to mic up 2 kicks / kits or need the 421 elsewhere.

Snare - Shure beta56 or Sennheiser e604. (I have never gotten in the habit of double micing kick or snare.)

Toms - Sennheiser e604s. (Audix f10s and F12s if I need to mic 2 kits.)

Hats - Altec a42. I dont know much about this mic (even where I got it) but its a condenser and sounds great on hats.

OH - Audix f15s.

Guitars - Sennheiser e609s or Shure SM57s.

Horns - usually SM57s but I have been known to put the D112 on kick so I can use the MD421 on trombone or other bass instruments.

Bass & Keys - EWI LDB 101s and LDB202s. I also have an EWI FDB202 if the source needs a passive DI.

Vox, Lead - Sennheiser e945 or Shure Beta58, backups - Shure SM58s. Recently I have had the opprotunity to work with a couple singers who brought their own SM87s and was real happy with those as well.

Planned mic stash upgrades include better condensers for cymbals or the occaisional accoustic instrument plus I need some wireless vocal mics.

Re: Whats in your mic box and what your favorite?

How about the mic you wished you owned?

There are a couple answers to that question: I would love to have a few Earthworks SR40s but that's just fantasy since I don't think I would use them enough to justify their $1k price tag. More realistically, I would like a set of Heil PR28s/48s and a couple PR35s and I will probably get those at some point in the coming year or so. I would also like a pair of AKG C451s and I very well may get those as well.

Edit: Maybe a couple Sennheiser e906s and some Shure MX202s.

Re: Whats in your mic box and what your favorite?

I have already downsized my locker to mics I actually use instead of what I THINK I should own. My personal favorites are the CM311s when using headsets, the OM6s when on LOUD stages, and SM86s whenever I can get away with them.....
