X32 Discussion

re: X32 Discussion

Well that's a bummer. Hopefully that will change in future software builds. I find that the ability to re-route individual inputs to channels on digital desks is a great feature.

Just to be clear. You will face this "8-row restriction" only, when you are mixing different kind of inputs in the channel block patch! F.e. AES50 AND the local XLR inputs on the console. In the real world, this would not be very common. Normaly you get your inputs from one kind of source (just the S-16s, or just the console inputs). When you just use the console inputs (XLR 1-32), or two S-16 digital stageboxes (with 32in and 16out) or the 32inputs from the recording card, you can re-routed and double/triple route any input individual without any restriction. :)

Concerning line inputs...yes, use a DI box. It's better anyway. But you have six additional line inputs on the console (below the XLR inputs, with jack and RCA), if you want to hook up line signals directly (iPod, CD-Player, whatever)...

i agree. it's probably not a big deal in practice. i think in reality it would be very easy to work around in most circumstances. but it's a good limitation to know about.

in case you hadn't noticed, the appetite for info on this product is pretty much insatiable, so you can keep telling us anything you're allowed to tell us... :) i just wish i had an actual need for it, but to be honest, it is really too big for half my needs, and too small for the other half. i'm still very very curious, however...

re: X32 Discussion

Hi Christian,
Thanks for the reply. Sound quality wise my SAC rig is on par with the Digidesign SC48 and the A&H iLive even with the ADA8000's as the pres. Much better sound than the older digital consoles I have used like the M7CL. I assumed the X32 would at least be as good as it is newer technology with Midas designed preamps. If the real world street price is in the mid 2k range or lower I will be buying one soon. I would have bought the Presonus SL 24 for some of the things I do but as I said the lack of motorized faders killed the deal for me. Thanks for all of your information.

Well, I'm kind of excited about this board, but with caution. I was all set on getting an A&H GLD board, but this box could do the trick for me. Of course, being burned by shoddy look alike product in the past, it's tough to justify diving in, even if the price is so right.

I believe if you have read all of Uli's post about the history of the manufacturing processes that I would have a hard time believing that the company would brave the wrath of these forums, etc by releasing a lemon... Especially after all the investment. I would love a GLD but how many times the price is it?

re: X32 Discussion

Yeah, the posts by Uli have definitely put this product in the running. Without the candid responses to the questions, this wouldn't have even been a product given consideration. Still, a company can say that changes have been made, but there is no track record to back it up. I certainly don't want to get one of these and then have it crap out mid show on me.

But the cost difference for a 32 channel system and digital snake is significant. The Behringer rings in at around $4500, versus the GLD would be over 12K for 32 channels. (web listed prices quoted)

I could buy two full systems for the same price, but that makes me nervous at the same time.

re: X32 Discussion

Just like any new product from "any" company, search out first hand experience from end users who have bought and received production units.

No company ever "plans" to make a mistake. If there are review units out in the field being used to mix gigs, that is a good sign.

Trust but verify.

Yep. Of note on the other hand, I have had bad experiences with every A+H Chinese product I have used so track record can sometimes be deceiving. I am taking the plunge...wish me luck!

re: X32 Discussion

Does anyone have a hunch that we can upgrade to a usb 3.0 interface or firewire800? so the sample rate is 44.1 or 48... hmmm, isn't this the same as presonus and all the others?

Be sure to post when you get some time on it. I am planning on getting one as well but it will be a few months. I have had great service out of my Chinese made A&H Mixwizard, GL2400, and Soundcraft GB4. I especially like the Soundcraft. Good luck!

My guess is this, there will be a first wave in a few weeks, and then a big lull while they pump out a pile of digital snake units as most X32 buyers will want those, and then a bunch of the personal monitors setups. I need to leap now and pray. If all is good others may wait till Christmas.

USB 3.0 or FiWi 800 probably not, BUT what makes the build in recording card special, is the hardware and drivers. The X32 recording card uses a bridgeCo chipset and drivers from Archwave! The Prism Orpheus uses also Archwave drivers and the recordingcard on the X32 performes just superb. I have an old ASUS centrio laptop and can get it to work with 64Samples over firewire. With my C2D desktop PC even lower to 48Samples. Most of the competitors (Presonus, Phonic f.e.) use the T.C. electronic DICE II Firewire chipset, which isn't really good, when you need really low latency (64Samples and less). But Uli does it:)
Concernig Samplerate, you are right. My guess is, that this was more a marketing decision. It is no secret anymore, that the X32 preamps have pretty much the same layout as the Preamps on the Midas Pro02. The difference is, that the Midas desks run on 96kHz and the X32 on 44,1 or 48kHz.

re: X32 Discussion

Dear all,

we have often been asked about the overall latency and phase management of the X32 console. Allow me to share some facts with you.

The X32 is absolutely phase-coherent and doesn’t require any delay management unless you use inserts.

What will surely interest readers is the fact that the console has an overall latency of about 0.8 msec. (any analog input to any analog output). If you use inserts, the latency increases to around 1.5 msec. We are using truly high-end and ultra-fast AD DA converters of the type Crystal CS5368 and CS4385 which you will find in the most expensive digital consoles.
The DSP's used in the X32 are of the type Analog Device Sharc AD21371, which is one of the most powerful DSP’s in the market.

To our knowledge there is no other digital console available in the market that offers such a low latency, regardless of any price. This extremely low latency of the X32 almost equals analog performance.

But don’t take our word for it and wait for test reports that will be coming out soon.

You're welcome:)~:)~
I tried to set up the X32 as a control surface for my SAC rig ( www.softwareaudioconsole.com ), but I was not 100% succussful, because SAC normaly needs a dedicated Midi-Template. Behringer is constantly working on new firmware updates, but there are only very few things left, that have to be implemented till the official sales date. Midi is one of them. It seems, that the X32 will have a Mackie HUI and a Mackie Control Midi Template, but by now only the Mackie Control Template is implemented. In addition, the board will feature various Midi in/outs (as hardware in/out on the desk itself, via USB slot and via the recording card as an embedded Midi signal through USB or FiWi). When I hooked up my small Acer laptop with Cubase, the Midi from the recording card was already there and working. So in the end I belief, it should be no problem to midi controll your DAW with the X32. You could even set up your own tranport control buttons (play, stop, rec. f.e.) with the user defined keys (Assign buttons).

Hi Christian, since i'm planning to sell my control surface for the x32, i'd like to know if with its mackie control emu the lcd's and the touch sensitive faders are working...

i'd like to know also if the stage box Midas DL251 (@48khz) can be seen and attached to the behringer, controling the gains too...

thanks!
Luigi.

I didn't investigate in this futher by now. When I have the time, I will check it. I know, that the DCA Faders on the X32 are in charge to work with the mackie control emu.
Concerning the Midas stageboxes, yes there interchanceable. You could hook up the Midas box to the X32 and vice versa. Of course, the Midas gear will just work with 48kHz...

Uli,

Thanks for the response to my question.
A latency between .8 and 1.5 msec., excellent by digital standards, still makes for a hollow sound for vocalists using in ear monitors. The hollow sound, caused by the comb filter between the natural “head sound” and the digital latency is only heard by the individual singer, not by their band members, engineers or the audience.

As they say at the carnival "close but no cigar".

Even though Bono is now a billionaire (nice investment strategy), he probably will continue using the analog Midas Venice for his in ear mix even though U2 can afford the XL8 wherever they want it.

At the May 11 2006 Midas XL8 unveiling in Albuquerque I asked my old buddy Matt Larson when Midas will put out a digital version of the Venice, at that time it was not in the cards.

Glad to see you have realized with the X32 what I hoped could happen when you rescued Midas from Telex (and that tool company), my congratulations!
