X32 Discussion

re: X32 Discussion

I don't have a particular application (like monitors) in mind, but I'm very much about having an Android option for remote control.

I heard the R&D guys talking about Android, so it might come also.
By now I already have the remote software in Beta (PC) here and I saw the alpha version of the iPAD app remote. So PC & iPAD user will be able to remote the X32 quite soon. They are working really hard, to get it all done in the next couple of weeks.
The S-16 is fully working audiowise, but there will be some minor upgrades to the firmware. I had first contact with the X32 end of february and it is really interessting to see, how everything is evolving.

re: X32 Discussion

Hi Christian,

Firstly thanks for sharing all your knowledge with all the folk here and SoundForums.net. Secondly I have a few more questions:

What are the dimensions of the X32..?
Would I be correct in assuming that there will be Mac OS X drivers for both USB and Firewire..?
Is it possible to save individual channel settings to the X32 library..?
Similarly is it possible to name the channels via the LED Scribble Strips to anything you like..?

Thanks in advance,

Peace, love and flowers,

Sean :D~:-D~

You are welcome;-)
Concerning your questions:
1. The X32 runs directly under CoreAudio with a Mac; that's what I'm told. I'm a PC guy, so I can't check this out.
2. Yes
3. Yes

re: X32 Discussion

Would it be possible to send the monitor mixes through wireless router controlled by software? If it can go through ethernet, why not wirelessly via software emulation of the p16 on android?

No. Latency is just one of the hurdles. You would have not only the wireless network devices to cause latency, but the android device itself would not have sufficiently low latency audio chipset and drivers to support your virtual AES50 receiver idea. This type of thing will likely come eventually, but we aren't there yet - other technologies will need to move forward before the audio industry can leverage them to do this sort of thing more feasibly and at a reasonable cost.

re: X32 Discussion

Well, that's quite subjective, but to me the quality is fine. There will be even some built improvements to the official boards, due some things, that occured during beta testing on the road. The fader themselves are a completly new design. In comparison to my Behringer BCF2000s, the X32 faders are way faster, accurate and more silent. Really good! Same goes for the Encoders, easy to deal with and precise. I think, you will be surprised. It dosen't look and feel cheap in any way.

re: X32 Discussion

Christian, have you tried using the X32 as both interface and controller for SAC?
Rather pointless, I know, unless you have some special plugins in SAC that you really want to use or an application where you use a million layers, or if you have too many sources and need the xtra channels from your stack of ADA8000 ????

re: X32 Discussion

Christian, have you tried using the X32 as both interface and controller for SAC?
Yes and it works really nice! I used the Mackie Control template for addressing SAC Channels, also the the soundcard works fine with SAC. Unfortunately you can not expand the channelcount within SAC, due to the fact, that SAC (like any other audio software) can only address one Asio driver at the time. So you can't add any futher in/outs with additional ADA8000 or such. At least I can't imagine a way to do so. Also you can't use the 24 monitorconsoles from SAC, because you can't route the returns from SAC directly into the X32 mixbusses. In addition, the R&D is working on a special signal flow, that let you use the card returns as digital inserts in the X32 channels. By now the signalflow is a bit tricky and I'm just useing SAC for adding some channels of Drumagog and a Sansamp VST Plugin for the Bass. That could be also accomplished with a simpler VST host like LiveProfessor. To be honest, I don't know..if I will stuck with this combination X32+SAC. But it is absolutly doable. And if you consider the costs of a decent SAC System with 32in/out+Fadercontrol...than the X32 seems like real bargain...

re: X32 Discussion

Time to celebrate a litte anniversary…yesterday I did the twentieth gig with a X32:)
I tried really hard to discover or even provoke any flaws or problems with the console, but there aren’t any! OK, as far as I can tell of course. I even pulled the FiWi cabel during a multitrack recording in the middle of the soundcheck and plugged it back, just to see what will happen…but the X32 doesn’t care at all. Recorded simultaniously with the build in 2Track USB recorder and did a 28 track recording over the USB port on the X32 recording card on my crappy Acer One Notebook…this thing has only a Intel Atom CPU but it works like a charme with the X32.
After 20 gigs with the desk my bottom line is:
If you are looking for a new mixer, than check the X32. You may be surprised:)

BTW: I did two „very impressive videos“ with my mobil phone yesterday…low resolution and in mono. So please don't comment on the sound. At least you can see, the X32 get’s the job done.

Don't know what's up with the prices either over here. The price range for the X32 goes from 2.375,- up to 3.125,- EURO here in Germany. I think the fact, that the recordingcard is now included and not optional anymore, may raised the price a bit..but I think, we will "see" the real world price not until the X32 is acutally available.

You might want to look into ASIO4ALL. This is similar to what you can do on Mac's with the core audio stuff. If you don't know, on Mac's, they provide a way to basically create a custom core audio driver that can combine audio in's and out's from anywhere on the PC into one driver so that they are all available to whatever program you are using. Windows PC's don't natively provide the same feature, but the ASIO4ALL program will allow you to do that so that you can increase the channel count as you mentioned.

Interessting, but how can I sync all the gear? The X32 has no wordclock. If I would use the ASIO4All driver, how could I manage the digital sync of the X32+SAC+additional ADA8000? In addition, I can't belief, that the ASIO4All driver can match the performance of the dedicated X32 Asio driver (48 Samples!), but that would be something to look into.

Nice to see that they outdid Presonus on the Firewire implementation. The studiolive desks stop passing all audio for several seconds on firewire connect/disconnect which has the potential to be really disruptive during a show if it was accidentally bumped etc (been there, done that thanks to an intermittent firewire cable). Good to know that this won't be an issue on the X32. Nice job on the X32 driver latency support too. Looking forward to it.

I pre-ordered one on 5/16 from zzounds, so I will be getting the first batch. Let's hope I don't have to deal with returns.
