I saw an engineer once that had a laser angle measure/indicator. It was basically cylindrical, blue, and had an adjustment ring where you could change the angle and it would output a straight line (horizontal or vertical) in the selected angle. Useful for measuring the dispersion of speaker cabinets. I've been looking all over, but haven't been able to find this kind of a unit. I find lots of laser distance measures, and laser levels, etc... But not this particular kind of laser unit. Anyone have any idea of a make or model?

I typed laser protractor into Google and got a lot of options. Now, of course, I want one!
The Denali 14" laser looks like the most useful for audio, as it doesn't display the angle from flat, like an inclinometer, it displays the angle the unit is opened. Finding one that has, or adding a second laser, would be very cool.

Yep, it's part of the SAS laser kit, called an LG-120 Line Generator. I've never been able to find one by itself, just as part of the kit. They're also pretty expensive from what I recall.

Its not a laser line/angle generator, however it will measure angles, distances, height, missing line and azimuth as well as intergrating with GPS and popular GIS software .

I attended a D&B showcase years ago where their systech had one like these, only with two lasers attatched. Never seen one after that. It was a great tool for visualizing coverage.

And to 2,000m on a reflective target! Just for $1,500 it doesn't replace my Leica D5, my GPS, and my Nikon. All together they were a little more than half that.

I use it as a quick cheap alternative to a theodolite when absolute accuracy is not required. Many engineering companies use them for those types of applications. When Justice said he saw an Engineer using one, I thought it may be something like the TruPulse.

That website is not a retailers website. It's a review page for a home theatre sound and video publication, that dates back to 2001. The sales email listed at the bottom returns as a bad email address, and the Checkpoint 3D website comes back as gibberish (ok, maybe it's some kind of sensible text in some Cyrillic language, but I can't read it). At this point, I'm thinking that Checkpoint, the company that produced that laser line generator is out of business and not producing any more.

Does anybody know of a similar device that does the same thing?

that unit doesn't mention if it has two laser beams, or just one (ie: for finding a point at a certain angle up from the ground) one with two lasers would be pretty useful. and probably a lot cheaper than one capable of making a visible line that long from that far away..

Your link is bad, but I assume you are talking about this Bosch GLM 80.

Using this device, can I hold it against the front of a speaker, select a 90 degress, and it will throw a laser line across the seating area showing how wide or narrow the selected dispersion is?

Still haven't found a device that does what I am looking for.

probably because at 90deg a laser line will get pretty dim at any reasonable distance..
you might be better off building your own with two pointers and a protractor to show you the extremes.

typically I'll take a piece of paper and fold it till I get the appropriate angle (90 and 45 are easy) and looking down it can give you a pretty good idea.

I think what Justice is looking for is a laser with a horizontal deflection scan.... kind of like the laser "cone" projectors in concerts, but flat.

If you had ever seen the LG-120 Line Generator, that I posted a picture of in my post above, you would disagree. At something like 120 or so feet from the proscenium line we could clearly see it at the back wall by the spot booth. It had plenty of power. If I could just find a place that actually sells them....

Actually, the two kits at the bottom of that page, SAS-1307 and 1308 contain the line generator that I want. I just don't want to spent $1,200 to $1,500 for all that other crap to get it. I'll have to research this source further. Maybe they can get just the line generator separate from the rest of the kit.
