X32 Discussion

re: X32 Discussion

Can't see how you'd use the handles on the Music Store one. I've built mine the same as the Thomann one.

The 'Music Store-style' handles are useful for carrying the mixer alone, since you can grab it with the one hand on the front and with the other hand on the back side. That way the center of mass is as close to your own as possible. And you don't hurt yourself with the handles. All my keyboard cases are built like that.

Please note that the Thomann case has an additional handle between the two shown on the pictures which is rotated 90 degrees (but don't take my word on it, maybe my case is a 'special case' ;)

re: X32 Discussion

Me too! Except to rainy Norway...
Can`t wait to testdrive it!
From Thomann also..

Now, who wants my Yamaha 01v96VCM??

Just got a text to say that my X32 is in the delivery van on its way to sunny Scotland (on exactly the date they said it would).

Mine hasn't, it's exactly like the picture. I'm adding handles like what you described. I really don't get the Music Store handles, can't imagine they would be helpful for anything but carting the case using a dolly.

re: X32 Discussion

Yes , I gave up on Studio spares and ordered the flightcase bundle from Thomann . The flight case arrivied several weeks ago and I was told way back when I ordered it that it would ship on the 10th and thats exactly when it did. Should be at my house on Thursday :)

Is amazing that Thomann knows exactly when shipments are going to arrive but none of the UK suppliers have a clue when they are coming (apart from DV247 who say the 18th of Sept)

Kev

Just checked the UPS tracking system and my mixers not going to arrive on Thursday 8O~8-O~ ........

Its coming on Wednesday :D~:-D~ Happy days

re: X32 Discussion

Well I ordered mine a good while back from a UK supplier. As far as I know there are still no UK supplied units in the country however I am told by electrovision (behringers UK importer) that they are receiving a container of them this Friday so shouldn't be long now. Fingers crossed!

By the way Christian, loving your event post's.

re: X32 Discussion

Suggest you all download 1.08 and update your units right away (probably shipped with 1.04 or 05), as there are a couple of UI tweaks that make using it even easier.

re: X32 Discussion

Hi Guys,
I got some pm about the Fx and settings I used on the lead vocals. Just fired up my desk and took some pictures for you. I hope you won't be dissapointed, acutally there is nothing special.
First of all, it is the singers performance that counts! All I could do, was some enhancement. Anyway, here is what I did.

Vocal mic was a AKG D5. Quite cheap and it won't fit for every singer. It has a very narrow directivity pattern, which means, that the singer needs a good mic technique.
You use a AKG D5, when you don't have enough money to buy an Audix OM7 like me:) Normally you use an OM7 on loud or small stages, or when the talent dosen' have a loud voice. So the deal is, the narrow polar pattern
works like a shield and you have less overspill from loud cymbals or snare drums. In my case, the drummer played the cymbal very hard. So I even didn't use any overhead mices at all! I miced the HiHat and the Ride cymbal, but no Overheads. So, all cymbals you hear on the recording aren actually overspill through the vocal mics! The overspill get's even worse, if you use high ratio compression with lots of gain reduction on the vocals. But I got away with a ratio of 3:1, medium attack, fast to medium release and a gain reduction of -6dB at maximum.

If you have to deal with this problems in your band too, maybe check the Audio OM7 or the AKG D5. Wonder-working on singing drummers too!

This is the channel EQ on the lead vocal channel:

Quite standard for vocals, nothing specail. Now for the vocal reverb. Personally, I don't like reverb very much on vocals, but the vocals sounded way to upfront with the local pa system, that I had the feeling, they need to go back into the mix a bit.
So I dailed in a bit of this:

Short reveb time, and a serious PreDelay, which lets the transients of the words without reverb. This helps to keep up the vocals definition. Concerning FX, I always use lot's of hi and low cut. When I got the time, I adjust the high cut like this: Every singer has more or less a specific "SSSS-Sound Frequency". Normally between 6-9kHz. During soundcheck, I set up one very narrow EQ band and sweep through the lead vocals, to find this frequency. Than I use this frequency as cut off (hi cut) frequency for my reverb and delay fx. Otherwise, the FX will even enhance the SSS-sounds. Here is my dealy setting:

and:

Quite dramatic hi&lo cuts. This keeps the Delay sound more in the "back" of the mix and the spillover from cymbals is lower in volume as well in the mix. I used slightly different Feedback times for L&R. This enhances just a tiny bit the depth of the delay fx.

One thing about EQ in general. In a dense mix, it is sometimes hard to find a "parking lot" for all signals. One thing the helps me, is to create space with EQ. This is one topic in the FabFilter EQ tutorial as well. One example. This is the EQ on the keyboards:

You can see a dip in the low mid area.
On the guitar is quite the opposite.
Now I had space to feature the low mids on the guitar.

This technique works really good for the "problem area" kick drum & bass as well!
So, this is how I roll but there are always other ways to achive similar or better results.
The X32 gives you so much options, that I don't find on other low budget desks.
Go ahead and use it8)~~

Christian

PS: Two things I forgot. I made a dedicated subgroup for all FX returns, so that I can mute them at the end of a song with just one push of a button. And I routed the Delay return to DCA fader No.8. So I can instanly control the Delay volume without the need to change the layer. Other sound guys perfer to have the delay send on a fader...but that is a matter of taste. Works for me.

Thanks for all your posts Christian.

just to confirm, so with you 2xdesk setup - you have access to maybe 7 full fx from the foh position? (Assuming you're still using a stereo) foh insert?

are you gain levels independent when the consoles are linked?

im still a little unclear on how the aes50 would split your consoles, but keen to try it.

re: X32 Discussion

Hi there Christian
Wow! Not only are you very talented, but very generous as well. Thank you for the piCtures and text explanation, it would have taken me hours and hour to try and work out what you had done to produce such a great sound (if I could have at all). By the way one of the best (if not the best) direct tracks from desk that I have heard. I think your comment that you like to mix to produce sound like in studio might be some of the secret.
thanks
thanks

I don't have my X32 yet and am planning on it taking monitor duties alongside a Soundcraft MH series FOH console. That aside, I'm interested in the efficiency of linking the consoles together and I'm certain when I was reading into this, that there is +/-10dB trim control on your inputs over AES50 V the gain applied at the pre-amp stage on say the monitor console of S16.

Hi Brett,
David is right, you have no direkt MicPre control on the FoH desk, just a digital trim (+/- 12dB I think). So you need a good monitor guy, when going this route. Tobi sended me perfect levels, so I didn't need the trim at all. Of course, this setup only works in controlled enviroments. On a combat audio festival situation, you will still need analog splitters, otherwise you will be in trouble. All professional festivals I mixed at, gone this route. Gain sharing has some downsides, for example, you have to wait, till the monitor guys has set the levels before you can do anything on the FoH console...a "no go" for bigger festivals.
Or you have two of the bigger Midas Pro desks, these have two preamps build in (!!) in one channel. This way you can use the same stagebox without compromising.

But what Tobi and I did, works really good for fixed band setups and repetitive events! With this setup, you don't lose any FX or other features on the FoH console. On the Monitor desk indeed you will need to provide two analog outputs as Mains return form the Foh console. Talkback and a mono 2Track could be send over AuxInputs 3&4. So you can speak directly to all monitors/InEars on stage and in addition you could at least send a mono signal ("concert intro" for example) in the monitors too. All you need is one single CAT5 cable - really nice!

re: X32 Discussion

Was playing around a bit last night, still haven't cleared space to set up properly - just needed to verify a couple of things.

When turning everything up to max, ie. 60dB gain and +10 on the faders, the noise was very consistent on all channels and very even and peak-free on my simple iPad analyzer app, very good, looked like pure thermal noise allthough I didn't try to freeze the preamps with liquid nitrogen or CO2 to verify ;)~;-)~.

Playing music off the USB stick, it looks to me like the clip light is pre-trim, quite annoying. Some of my backing tracks are very hot, normalized to 0dB, so even at maximum (or minimum if you like?) trim of -12dB i still was 6dB above a nominal -18dBfs that I believe is the agreed upon "0" reference level. Since most files run hotter than -6dB, -3dB is quite convensional, I believe the trim should be made to go to -18dB if not -24. Not a biggie, but still.

Dynamics Tab

@Behringer

It would be very helpful to have an output meter on the Dynamics (Compressor/Expander) tab.

Currently, there is an input meter, and a meter showing the amount of gain being cut.

It is possible to see the output level on the Main tab. However, when the Main tab is selected, the only compressor adjustment is the Threshold.

Eric H.

Added: The same would probably apply to the Gate tab. (Can't really speak to that at this point. I've been living on the Dynamics tab for the past two days. We have a guest speaker that has poor mic technique, coupled with a very large dynamic range.)

Parametric EQ

@Behringer

A parametric EQ would be a very welcome addition to the effects library.

I’m enjoying the channel EQ. Unfortunately, if the filters are used as very narrow notch filters (think feedback), it doesn’t leave many filters left.

An ability to insert a parametric EQ would allow a few problem areas to be notched out, still leaving the channel EQ for general shaping.

The parametric EQ could be simple, or it could be more complex, having automatic filters (i.e., feedback destroyer).

X32 Screen Accident

Hi guys, it's been great to be part of the forum, I've been blessed of been part of it and this was fundamental in buying a X32 and 4 P16m with its P16d for our small church in Dominican Republic (with our small budget it was almost impossible thinking about having a digital board, until Behringer came out with this great product on this unthinkable price range, and even then we had to count on some people to make special donations for the project of buying these equipments)...
The thing I want to share with all of you to encourage you to buy and expect the best out of the post sales customer Service of this company is regarding an accident that happened while I traveled to Florida, USA to pick up the mixer and the personal monitor system, I was very excited, I even posted in the forum questions regarding what to check before flying back and everything worked great as expected, I bought a Gator Gmix 38x28x8 case packed everything well and took the flight back home to the Caribbean only to realize the TSA opened the case (I know this for a note they leaved inside the case) moved the mixer from the position I have secured it placed it put the board on top of two of the P16m and the END result was a Broken lcd Screen (pictures attached) on the X32, and the volume and pan Knobs on 2 of the 4 P16m broken (the other two got here perfect)...
As you would imagine what was for me a dream trip (to get the equipment I always wanted for church) didn't turn out as expected and I was really sad with the outcome even if that weekend (I got here on saturday) we were able to connect the board in time and use it with the damaged screen for the youth service and the sunday service getting a sound from our band never heard before...everything sounded perfect but the thing with the screen and the knobs (and it was almost impossible for us to send it back to USA for repairs, because the cost of traveling with an oversize and overweight item like this plus the almost 40% customs tax our Government Charge for equipment like these, we were really sad) was a real problem ahead our eyes..well I came to the forum sent a PM to Christian who showed real interested and suggested me to PM a few people including Uli Behringer himself who for my surprise was the first to answer, showing real interest in my case (even knowing Behringer had nothing to do with this, again it was an accident while transporting the system) and he just asked for a shipping account and just 3 days after our forum conversation I received one new Lcd screen and 6 Volume/Pan Knobs for The P16m which I personally together with my team replaced on the affected gear (I'm the church Pastor but also an Electronic Engineer) and now everything is back to normal with these great products working as they should and Behringer has our total trust and commitment in the future...(We have even started talking people willing to cooperate to raise funds to buy two S16 when they are available) because I prefer to buy equipment from companies that show they are not only interested on the business side of manufacturing products but also in helping people lives with the product they make, way to go Behringer!!!
I'm including a couple before and after pictures, and want to encourage you to Trust this company and their products, they really have put everything they have unto this project and I know this will be a new company from now on,
Thanks for reading, God Bless You all
