Another Stupid Deal

Re: Another Stupid Deal

So, is the official answer to the old 'best drum mic' thread going to be changed now to (whatever cheap crap musicians friend is blowing out at the moment)?

Pages upon pages have been written on these forums about which exact mic is preferred for each drum related task, and it's all chucked out the window when a deal comes along... Haha.

I wouldn't call the EV stuff cheap crap, and these kits are perfectly usable mics.

I have a feeling that every once in a while we see these extraordinary deals on EV stuff because they are passing incentives to their dealers.

Re: Another Stupid Deal

Sounds like a D6 clone? Yah, a "one sound fits all" kick mic for good or bad.

I find it amusing that everyone has their favorite mic for this or that on voice or guitar, most of which happens to be what built in EQ the mic has (I mean, c'mon, the 58 is the standard and not flat by a mile!), but when a kick drum needs to be miced up all of a sudden pre-emphasis in the mic means the mic is junk. Personally, I love the D6, and on many instruments that aren't kick. Do I use it for Jazz? No. Every rock like genre? Pretty much.

If mics were truly flat it would all come down to durability and polar pattern.

Heck, I know many that hate the "flat" kick mics and love the D6. IME it ain't all the hard to turn those little knobby things ;)~;-)~ on the mixer to get the sound you want from any of the popular kick mics - or a "lowly" SM58 if that's what you have. If the PL33 sounds anything like a D6 I'll be happy to work with it for the $25 it cost here :D~:-D~ .

Re: Another Stupid Deal

I have a hard time believing that these are the same quality EV microphones as the RE-20, etc. At least the kick drum mic in this kit is "Frequency countered for a "dialed in" kick drum sound" ... That should save some time during soundcheck... Ugh.

Of course they are not going to be the same "quality" as a $400.00 single microphone.

For what it is, I say it's a decent deal for a starter or back-up plan.

Yeah, those knobs on the board are there for a reason... not all people can afford the "big boy" mics.

Hello,
If there weren't different tastes/preferences in Microphones, there would only be one model. I have close to a thousand Microphones, a few may sell for enough to make a down payment on a home, it doesn't stop me from collecting...or even trying new Mics in "preferred" tasks.

And yes, I have my preferred Mics for specific tasks, but, not because of what a group on a website posted as their favorites, but, because I have used them many, if not hundreds of times, and I liked the way they sounded, or I KNEW what to expect in regards to the way they'll sound in whatever task they were assigned.

Remember, sometimes Audio Recording and the Live Audio business is where Art meets Science. Sometimes it's the particular "sound" they want when someone chooses a Microphone.

ps. So stay on your track, don't think for yourself, and ... don't buy anything unless it is preferred by a forum consensus.

Hammer,

I've got loads of mics too, not nearly as many as you it sounds, but certainly a good cross section of what gets asked for most often. My original quip about the drum mic threads was intended to be a joke, but I guess that didn't translate.

For me, buying industry standard mics make meeting client requests much easier. Do I favor my AE6100 vocal mics? Sure, but the sm58 collection still sees more use. Shit, I've had guys turn down an RE-20 or AKG-414 on a tenor sax, in favor of a 57 or 58.

So sure, buy whatever mics make you happy, not going to bother me any. Call me closed minded and unable to think on my own, if it helps you get your point across, that's cool too.

Re: Another Stupid Deal

My 4 piece kit just came though the door. "BIG" nice padded case. Holds 3 of my other clip on mics fine. My mxl condensers are a little small for the space on the top.
First impressions is they are solid and weight more than my other ones. Have kind of an odd velvet textured feel to them. Clips are ok and looks to be as good as the other ones I have.
I'll try them here this weekend compared to other microphones I have.

Good first impressions when looking at the mics. The case looked to be big enough to hold 20 microphones before I opened it. A lot of protection for a few mics.

AAAANND.... Today they have the CAD Pro-7 drum mic kit up for a steal. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/stupid

I really need to delete this bookmark. (No, I'm not buying this one.)

Anyone have any experience with these??

Pat

BTW, these kits are not what we have in our arsenal, nor mine. These are just cheap solutions for clients that never want to spend any money.

Re: Topic swerved caused by lyrics quotation

"We bought ten lbs. of brown rice and five more of beans
And five pounds of Granola and you know what that means,
I'm just a regular fella with the Chicken Cordon Bleus"

Gee I miss him
