Re: X32 Rack - What if I sell my X32

hello

I have done a bunch of gigs with X32 using iPad over wifi. Only slight problem ever was meters occasionally freezing for couple of seconds.
I never got to like mixing with mouse, but with iPad things are really nice.

Since X32R is coming soon - some bird whispered in my ear, that it might be in July - I have been thinking to set up a rack with X32R + 4-channel monitor amp + 1 unit UPS + 1 unit drawer for spare laptop. For PA I have 2x iNuke 6000DSP in second rack. I do mostly small sets, where 16 inputs / 4 monitors + LR+mono sub is plenty of channels. In a pinch I could use the 6 AUX-inputs for dynamic microphones with step-up transformers. Okay - limited resources there - but I am firm believer of tuning the instruments right and selecting and positioning right microphones in correct places anyhow, so no big deal to me.

Recording options will be the same - I have two S16, so I can have all inputs/outputs of X32

I would be giving up the physical control panel for the quite limited X32R control panel - so if wifi goes haywire, I might find myself up to the neck in shit creek ...
Now I´d be running to mixer at side of stage and tweak it there - with X32R I´d be tweaking the laptop.

But then I have been reading Christian working with his laptop for how long..???

I am asking you fellows - what other pitfalls are to be expected, if I make that move ? I really like to work with iPad ( have both big and mini )

Good thing is, that I can decide later - X32R is coming soon anyway and I can keep X32 around, until I am sure.

Solstice is around the corner - enjoy the light.

Re: X32 Rack - What if I sell my X32

@Nuuska:
When mixing with the X32Rack, I always connect the iPad AND a Laptop, so if one fails, you still have the other.
BTW: I heard, that the X32Mix App will be again updated soon. The new version will have even more control/features than the actual one and above all, it features a more robust wireless connection!
There are lot of background things going on with going wireless, the new version should lower the load on the overall stream. Really good news, especially for all X32rack and Core users.

That is very good news. The less chatty the interface is, the less things can go wrong.

Hopefully, they don't have to sacrifice latency too much in order to get less bandwidth usage.

Re: X32 Rack - ladies and gentlemen - place your orders now !!

quick question about the rack... i would doubt it does... but figured id ask someone who has one. does it have HUI and Mackie control like its bigger brothers? just curious cause it would be cool to be able to then use the ipad as a control surface and run the box. let me know if it does! thanks

All X32's have it. You have to hook it up through X32 Edit in all cases though ( ie you need a PC to do it)

Re: X32 rack and S16 dimensions.

Height and width are pretty obvious. I was curious about the depth (for both products) which is why I tried to look it up. I always appreciate a complete specs write up on the company's web site for a given product. Behringer is a little more "glossy" with their web site and I'm not sure I understand why. To make it worse, there seems to be some discrepancy about depth of rack items. Does it include the handles or other faceplate protrusion? For instance, Sweetwater lists the NU6000 as 12.2" deep. I measure something closer to 13.125".

Re: X32 rack and S16 dimensions.

The color TFT screen was the tip.

The dimensional drawing in the S16 spec sheet calls out 9.15" from the front of the handles to the back edge of the case. It does not appear to include the connector protrusions on the rear panel and none of the front panel controls extend past the handles. The manual for the X32 Rack is one number, no indication of the measuring points. If the same handles were used, they protrude 22mm from the face plate, if that helps any.

Re: X32 Rack - ladies and gentlemen - place your orders now !!

I thought all you need for iPad control is a router. ?

Dear Tim,

You are correct in that you can run the X32 RACK with the iPad by just connecting a wireless router to the REMOTE CONTROL port and using the screen and Rotary Knobs to set your IP settings.

Re: X32 Rack - ladies and gentlemen - place your orders now !!

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I thought it would be better than starting a new one. Can the X32 and X32 Rack be used in surface/stage box configuration? For example, I would like to get the X32 Rack now and then maybe add an X32 in the future as a control surface. Or should I just get the X32 Compact and add S16s in the future if needed?

I don't think you can use the Rack as a stagebox - you might want to consider getting a Core and an S16 instead. Other advantage is the I/O will be on the front panel.

I think with the new firmware you CAN use the Rack as a stage box. They improved the routing to a level that I believe makes this possible.

Hi Brian, this is with the 2.0 Beta Firmware, right? Have you tried it? If not, what in the release notes makes you think this is possible?

Well, I know they enabled the ability to access the outputs without going through the mixer. So you can now route from the AES50 directly to the outputs, which was a big issue before. Also, they separated the preamp control from the digital trim enabling you to use the mic pre's from the rack for both the rack and another X32. Both mixers then have local digital trim to adjust from there.

Between these two changes I can't see why you couldn't just use the Rack as a stage box. You give up the two ADAT outs which may or may not matter to you. You could also get the ADAT card if you needed more outputs available. And of course you also get the 6 extra Aux ins and outs.

I haven't done the firmware upgrade yet but I'm planning to soon at which point I can test these things in the real world. But assuming I am correct in my assumptions, I'm gonna be buying 3 Racks instead oft the 3 cores and 3 s16s I was gonna get before. Should save me a pile of money with the recent price cuts.

Pardon my ignorance but I didn't follow why what you said had anything to do with ADAT? I also did not follow how what you said allowed the X32 to be a control surface. It seemed to me that you were routing the rack inputs to the X32 and the X32 outputs through the rack outputs? That seems more like using the rack as a stage box.

Thanks Brian! That's exactly the info I was looking for and exactly what I was thinking with the value of the X32 Rack vs the Core+S16.

Yup, that's what I was asking for. I want to be able to use the rack as a stage box and as stand alone.
