So we get new Yamaha desks? CL series

Re: So we get new Yamaha desks? CL series

Mike,

Could you discuss the gain sharing algorithm a bit more.
- How audibly seamless is it?
- Can all consoles actually affect the analog mic pre?

This looks to be a really cool system? How soon will dealers have prices and inventory?

Thanks

Philip

Re: So we get new Yamaha desks? CL series

From the press release from soundonsound:

"The CL5 and Rio3224-D are scheduled to be released in the spring of 2012, with the CL1, CL3 and Rio1608-D available in the summer."

Haven't found pricing yet.

Re: So we get new Yamaha desks? CL series

According to SVCOnline:

Targeted MSRP for the Yamaha CL5, CL3, and CL1 is $27,499, $21,999 and $14,999, respectively. The Rio3224-D has a targeted MSRP of $8,499 and the Rio1608-D has a targeted MSRP of $4,799. The optional meter bridge for the CL3 and CL1 has a targeted MSRP $1,199.
The Yamaha CL5 and Rio3224-D will be available in late Spring 2012, and the CL3, CL1, and Rio1608-D will be available in late summer 2012.

We waited all these years for this? Only 72 channels? Only 24 mixes? Only 8 FX? What a disappointment.
They could have at least had a high-end version with higher counts - Yamaha still has no replacement in their lineup for the PM1D.

Correct, This is not a replacement for any consoles. It is a brand new line.
You can mix up to 72 channels - You can have up to 128 inputs connected to one console.

There are 32 busses including matrix's, The matrix can be mixed from each channel like a aux so 32 mix busses.

There are 8 standard EFX racks
There are 16 GEQ that can be inserted on mix busses without using efx rack space.
There are 8 stereo premium racks with all new plug in type comps, eq, etc.

Andrew, patience is what we need to have.

Philip,

Not sure on the sound of the gain sharing but from what I understand you should be able to have each console control the remote mic pre.

There certainly are a lot of nice features on this desk. Some that no other yamaha desk has.
The MSRP and availability dates that were posted above looke to be correct.

I was speculating from the Nexo oops yesterday that there might be 96 inputs, just counting bank buttons.

But from the block diagram it does do the same thing with matrices as the M7CL - so that's effectively 32 mixes, though maybe not as easy to access the matrix ones.

Blech. Don't give me 24 auxes and 8 matrices, give me 32 busses all with the functionality of the matrices. Don't give me 8 Fx and 32 graphs and 8 premium processors, give me 48 rack devices which can be any combination of those things.
Digital console designers don't get it. They're still stuck in the analogue world.

Re: So we get new Yamaha desks? CL series

Can anyone comment of the status of audio if the console power dies , or the network connction becomes unplugged - do things keep trucking along (ala ilive / AVID) ?

I don't think the processing is in the stageboxes Shane. My understanding is that for network redundancy you would use a star topology.

Looks like a nice rig. If you've used a Yammy digital before the interface is instantly familiar, I feel like I could mix a basic show on these with no intro time. Nice to see that they are trying to address some of the sonic improvements desired. The Neve stuff is a nice touch, and getting 1176 and LA-2A as available compressors in the rack is wonderful.

I don't think Avid does that - the surface, maybe, but you'd almost always have the FOH Rack on the same power, and a glitch there would cause problems.

To be fair, it's not like Yamaha has been saying "just you guys wait, in 2012 we'll release a super-duper new flagship with all the imaginable bells and whistles". It's just that "we" have been expecting something to superceed the PM1D on our own accord.

My guess is that PM1D made them little money but LS9, M7CL and PM5 made them tons so it's probably the logical avenue to take.

I think this will put Yamaha back on the "to be considered list" for many who are also looking at other brands like Midas and Soundcraft. Also, since Yamaha just seem release new products with very little forewarning, who's to say there aren't more models coming out soon?

As much as I would have liked to see a PM2D state-of-the-art flagship it makes sense in my mind to expand on the middle model for now (which after all is where the new series takes it's name from). However, in usual Yamaha style, the numbers don't make sense... I think they should have named the new desks something like M1CL, M4CL and M9CL.

like this ? - (using the digital audio pair as DMX)
any issue with a/c running with it ?

It's great to have some extra copper alongside digisnakes. One thing people seem to forget is that shout mics will die just when they are most needed if they are routed through stuff like stage racks and mixers. My favourite is to have a cheapo desktop radio on top of the doghouse at either end of the snake. Shout mics connected directly to aux in on the radio at the other end. Power dies and the internal double As just take over and you still have shout!
