I think everyone has looked in on the "GTG" thread.......17 pages and counting of trollish product hype with nary an inkling of any real specs or measurements to go along with the "marketing voodoo". And just as modern digital devices "phone home to the Mothership", I can just imagine that such a thread might generate even more marketing hype along the lines of "revolutionary speaker design catches the interest of top industry professionals".......under the heading of "any publicity/mention is good".

I would prefer such threads to be quashed outright under the Forum rules prohibiting those with commercial interest in a product from waging such spurious postings pretending to "discuss" or "debate". This flim-flammery is nothing but trollery.

Re: Troll thread

Dick,

As that thread contains Loudspeakers, I am extremely reluctant to make any comment of any kind in it or about it. However, I am paying very close attention, and so far it seems that moderation is not required.

If you would like to talk further about this issue feel free to drop me a PM, email, or phone call.

I would remind you that the only forum rules are:
1) Don't be a jerk.
2) Disclose manufacturer or dealer affiliation.

Bennett....

Thanks for the personal attention. I believe point 2 was accomplished upon or just short of dental extraction.

Re: Troll thread

From one of my favorite folkies, Tom Chapin -

"Don't play with Bruno, Bruno is a dweeb!
A dweeb? What's a dweeb?
Oh you know... like Bruno!"

From "A Definition of a Jerk", by Sydney J. Harris:

"A jerk, then, is a man (or woman) who is utterly unable to see himself as he appears to others. He has no grace, he is tactless without meaning to be, he is a bore even to his best friends, he is an egotist without charm. All of us are egotists to some extent, but most of us--unlike the jerk--are perfectly and horribly aware of it when we make asses of ourselves. The jerk never knows."

Re: Troll thread

If nothing else it has distracted us from the hundreds of pages of X32 posts.

I agree with the train wreck analogy, just gotta look even if you know it is going to be horrible.

Re: Troll thread

In reading that thread I can't think of anything but this (you guys know it):
Dunning–Kruger effect

Good stuff, I was looking for studies into what I might call Collective Dunning-Kruger effect, ie when a group or organisation lack collective and individual competence, or is that simply called "Government"?

Being aware of the effect, and knowing that one knows not enough and finding things difficult, it is tempting to second guess initial feelings and conclude that one must indeed be an expert if one is to realize one's own incompetence.

My pet organizational subject is how "modern" recruitment and advancement processes put an emphasis on qualities that are easy to recognize by "recruitment specialists", qualities like positive attitude, appearance, charm and "likebility", often ignoring real skill and competence because the recruitment specialists lack the specialized field competence to asess these qualities. This in turn weakens the organisations own ability to recognize skill and competence, often squeezing the real copetence out and leaving the organisation without the skill and competence to assess it's own performance, much less identify problems with the performance or indeed identifying and correcting causes of a decline in performance.

I guess a similar process goes on with some internet communities/foras, where the "believers" see the sceptics and the true specialists as merely naysayers to be scoffed and ignored, often to the extent that these true specialists grow tired and leave.

Re: Troll thread

Just messin with ya... and for the folks who supplied definitions of what a jerk is, I used a smiley face, hoping to communicate that I was kidding.

re: Dunnig-Kreuger there are other internet forum stereotypical behaviors too many to list, and probably not worthy of scientific papers, bit in no particular order.

1) Mother hens: who invest way too much effort trying to influence the posting behavior of others on the WWW.
2) Proud parrots: People who have almost learned a little about some subject and jump at every opportunity to write everything they know, even if unrelated to the OP's question.
3) Uncertain Experts: People who are unsure of the answer so post their best guess, looking for confirmation.
4) TMI PO: People who like to hear themselves talk, who don't stop at a simple answer (I am often guilty of this one).
5) Trolls: Actual trolls who remarkably manage to have internet access.

1) Mother hens: Nah, not me
2) Proud parrots: Guilty
3) Uncertain Experts: Guilty
4) TMI PO: Guilty
5) Trolls: The explanation of how they got internet access can be infered from the press conferance with the prime minister at the end of this movie: Trollhunter (2010) - IMDb (incidentally, I live about a mile from where the first troll encounter in the movie takes place, if that might be a clue to my behaviour  )
