X32 Discussion

Re: X32 Screen Accident

Actually Presonus deleted the thread they had on their forum regarding the X32 vs SL24, which led me to look elsewhere.... That action by Presonus (deleting that thread) leads me to beleive they know for a fact they've got some serious competition, that thread said from various users that the X32 was better... I wanted to go over that thread again but its gone, that's why i'm trying to get anyone else to share their thoughts on the SL24 vs X32... thanks

re: X32 Discussion

Wow, didn't know Presnous actually deleted the X32 thread. Ths is lame and tells you something how afraid they are.

I have a SL1642 and was happy with it, but a month ago it froze during a live event. Presonus has known problems with power supplies and freezing consoles.

Has anyone had any freezers with the X32?

Thanks Dave.......I was here still using the preliminary manual and figuring stuff out on the X32.....got a whole lot figured out but this will surely help to speed up the process......yes I needed to clear my browser cache......and this mixer is worth twice the price it is selling at easily....congrats Uli and company....very well done

Re: X32 Screen Accident

Anyone waiting for a Real Time Analyser to be added to the x32 ?? I certainly am :) Would help me see the frequencies causing feedback. Most of time when I ring out the system I dont have an issue but when we have multiple bands playing they sometimes move the monitors etc leading to problems and we have quick change over times. You also cant hear the monitors if you are running FOH.

Anyway so I started thinking about how I could do this with what I have whilst we wait and see if it gets added to the firmware. And this is what I came up with.

I own several DEQ2496 Ultracurves that have a RTA built into it, so I hooked one up to the AES port on the back of the X32, set the DEQ2496's input to digital (AES) and then set the routing on the X32 to connect AES L to MONITOR L and AES R to MONITOR R.

Now what ever I solo gets sent to the RTA and I can see the frequencies causing issues even if I cant hear the monitors :) (not perfect but it helps)

Would really love to see SMAART built in to the system as well like Presonus.

Re: X32 RTA

My solution, that is not specific to the X32 or any other hardware, is to use an RTA on my laptop, connecting the input on my laptop to the headphone out on my mixer. It is not a perfect solution in pure audio terms, but works well enough for RTA where some slight imperfection doesn't really show up on the trace.

Re: X32 Screen Accident

I typically use a pair of iPads for this, running Audio Tools. One has a mic, so I can see what the room is doing, and the other one I patch into my headphone jack on the board. Anything I have soloed, now I have an immediate set of tools I can work with. I've been doing this for the last couple years with great success, and it works on any board I'm sitting at.

Re: X32 Screen Accident

I've had my X32 for about 2 or 3 weeks and have used it on 3 shows now, haven't had much time outside the shows to mess with it much but last night I realized that the monitor and talkback sections are not working. I can plug in the headphones and the volume works fine, but none of the buttons light up when I push them (mono, dim, view, talk A or talk B) and nothing changes on the screen.

has anyone else had this problem? or heard of anything like this before?

Re: X32 Screen Accident

Hey X32-Heads,
back from a nice X32 weekend:)

I'm working on a prog rock recording and just finished the first rough mix last saturday. Still some editing to do, but I'm pleased with the overall sound so far.
Just used the X32 and mixed and test mastered in StudioOneV2, no additional hardware. I'm seriously thinking about to buy a second X32 and put it in my studio B.
For me the X32 works great in a smaller studio enviroment. Here is a snippet of the song:

In addition I invested in more X32 gear..my P-16M micstand clamps came last friday. Looks good and really sturdy as well:

To conclude my X32 weekend, I mixed a Top40 band on familiy day event last sunday. But "high noon" is just not the right time for R'n'R. Beyond that, I had to deal with very strict SPL limits, what was not an easy task.
I couldn't bring up the drums to a level, they normally need to sound good, but that's part of the fun being provincial sound guy:) In addition...no soundcheck, just line check with headphones...funny.
Here is a 2Track recording (staight of the desk with the build in USB recorder) of the opening song. You can hear, how I try to balance the individual volumes. Keyboards too quiet, GTR too loud...one check of the dealy and very little reverb
at the beginning, you know the deal.

The X32 on location was not mine, so I made a rough mixscene at home, that I stored to a USB stick and recalled on location. Works great. The only feature request that I have:
It would be nice, if the original scene name would be displayed. By now you just see the scene number and a (to me) cryptic column. But I marked the scene number on the flashdrive and was good to go.
Some pics:

Nice stageview:)

The band came with their own inear mixing desk. Nicely crafted setup. It has analog splitters with transformers bild in and every musician has its own small mulitcore subsnake (on Siemens connectors), carrying the mic signal, power and InEar signal.

The male leadsinger's vocal mic. Sounds "ok" to my ears.

During the gig, I had some time to play around with some cheesy&cheap mix tricks.
The first thing I tried, was to create pseudo stereo effect for the guitar. Here's the deal. I had just one channel of gtr with one mic. What I did is, routed the gtr to two individual channels. I panned one channel left and one channel to the right (not entirely). Than I EQed both channel just slightly different and activated the channel dealy just on the right channel and setup a channel dealy of about 18ms. This gives you a nice panorama sound with more depth. I find this useful for Solo instruments (like saxophone f.e.) or when dealing with rock trios (drums, bass, gtr and vocals).
This can be easily set up with the X32.

Than I asked myself, what can I do, to bring the drums more upfront in the mix, without increasing the volume? I came up with this. I created an audiosubgroup on bus 7&8. I routed all drums (kick, snare, toms) to it, but not the cymbals.
In this subgroup I inserted the dual tube stage effect and set the drive to about 20% and added some harmonics. Be sure, that the build in hi&low cuts are off. I don't know what this effect does, but it seems to me, that it adds a serious amount of THD and smooth overdrive, which helped the drums to cut through the mix if you don't overdo it. Maybe give it a try.

Have a great week!
Christian

re: X32 Discussion

The 'Music Store-style' handles are useful for carrying the mixer alone, since you can grab it with the one hand on the front and with the other hand on the back side. That way the center of mass is as close to your own as possible. And you don't hurt yourself with the handles. All my keyboard cases are built like that.

Added those handles to my case over the weekend - definitely a more natural and comfortable way to carry the console by yourself.

Re: X32 Screen Accident

Actually 1.07, I guess I'll upgrade and see what happens

Unless the fw was corrupted I can't see it making any difference - mine worked OK with 1.07 and works with 1.08. Do the monitor and talkback view buttons light up when you press them? If not, I'd suspect a connector has come adrift somewhere in that area.

no, none of the buttons on those 2 sections light up, but the "phones level" pot works fine

re: X32 Discussion

Well, from my hometown it's pretty much one big highway straight to Düsseldorf :p So I think I'm gonna go after all. At least I'll be sure the repair is done by the people with the right knowhow.

I decided to go to Düsseldorf when my supplier told me they didn't have any x32's left in stock. So they weren't able to exchange it for a new one. Turned out it was just a 110km drive since the development team of the X32 is stationed in Willich

It was repaired on the spot and it turned out one of the 8-channel output modules had a defect. This was the only case they knew about so it was just bad luck.

I would like to thank Uli and all the others involved at Behringer once more for getting in touch with me personally and actively helping me to get it fixed as fast as humanly possible!

Another great post, Christian. Hope you managed to find some sausages and beer at the lawn party.

The studio and live tracks sound most excellent. Not many bands cover Peter Gabriel. Nice!

What is the black material that you rolled out to cover the snake (or Cat5 cable) at the live gig? Is it easy to manage?

Thanks
