X32 Discussion

re: X32 Discussion

G'day All,

It's fixed!.. Replaced the XUF card with a known good one and job done! You wouldn't believe how attentive the Behringer people have been (I'll make another post on that).

Thanks to all who offered advice.

Pauly

Well.. I'm 99% sure it's the X-UF card -
This evening, I installa another brand new 1394 /400 card into another PC running Windows 7 and got an identical result!... Man this has been a challenge but I have now tried;
4 different 1394 interfaces (different brands and formats)
3 different 1394 cables
2 computers
2 operating systems
Various other techniques such as downgrading patch levels of the windows PCs, reinstallation of service packs etc.
- ALL - with the same identical result.
I'm now trying to find out what is the quickest way to resolve the issue as I'm in Mornington Australia, and have already lost a week trying to get this fixed. I'm hoping I'll be able to get another X-UF card express posted to me to resolve the issue.

Thanks all for listening and I'll continue to keep you updated and the (eventual) resolution - Just hope it's note the desk!

re: X32 Discussion

The one thing I'm not sure about is that the headphone max volume level seems a little low to me, even when I had the gain control set higher and the surface volume control turned up. This is my first digital board, so not sure if this is normal or not.

Yes, I agree the Headphone volume is too low, especially at a loud gig...

Fantastic news, Pauly!!! Did your original VIA-chipset FiWi end up working well for multitrack, or did you go with a TI-based card?

Congratulations, man...

re: X32 Discussion

Unfortunately any such recommendations are pretty worthless as manufacturers can and will change the "guts" mid production all the time. Luckily USB sticks are plentiful and cheap. I was at Office Depot the other day and in bins near the cash registers they had 8 GB flash drives for under $10 (!) Unfortunately you are probably going to have to try a few drives and then when you find one that works, get a few spares and hope the innards are all the same!

FYI, I found a model of USB key that seems to work fine with the X32. It came already formated as FAT32 so I had nothing else to do than deleting a couple of files that was on it. But the real beauty of it is that it's extremely low profile. I find it scary to have regular long USB key sticking up from the mixer because I have the feeling someone someday (that someone would probably be me :)) is going to accidently hit the key and break it or worst, break the mixer USB connector. The key is a Lexar echo ZE :Lexar® Echo ZX Backup Drive | Lexar . You can hardly notice it when it's plugged into the consol.

tks

re: X32 Discussion

Hi All,

Thank you a lot for good information on the forum.
I would like to ask you, because soon I will have 2 pieces of X32.
If 2 consoles X32 are connected via AES50a, can I do routing like following?:

1st. FOH: In the Setup> to choose -> Card ->Interface-> FireWire->32in/32out

2[SUP]nd[/SUP]:
Inputs: Stage -> Monitor X32 to route Local 1-32 ->via AES50a-> FOH mix X32, then mirroring all 32 channels to FiWi card (routing on card will be AES50A1 to AES50A32). Here on the PC, I would like to run VST host program. And then on the FOH X32 in Home Routing to select inputs (Card 1-32) to do the rest of FOH work.

3[SUP]rd[/SUP]:
Outputs:
FOH X32 to route output to AES50a: MainL post Fader to Output1 ; MainR post Fader to Output2 (Out 1-8 are routed to AES50A 1-8 by default)
Monitor X32: Routing->Home-> Assign AUX1-4 to AES50A A1-4 (Output 15 -> Direct out AUX1 pre EQ; Output 16 -> Direct out AUX2 pre EQ)

Did somebody do this config?
What about latency, delay of FOH sound,…?
What could be a problem with this configuration?
Where do you see a bottleneck?
Thank you for your comments.

re: X32 Discussion

Jan, assuming your routing is ok, I think it is fine from what I can remember, and assuming your computer can handle the processing, there shouldn´t be a problem as far as total latency is concerned, you would want around 10-20 ms of delay for mains anyway, but some plugins don´t report their latency correctly, and not all vst-hosts align correctly, so you might find that aligning lots of plugins for live use can be quite difficult.
I assume you want to run insert-type plugins to individual channels, stuff like de-essers, other dynamic eq, autotune and such. While it can be done, the latency when all is aligned might force you to physically align the mains by moving them further away from stage.

Wow these sessions seems very interesting. Unfortunatly, they fall right at the end of my work day so I can't get home in time to be able to grab a spot. Is there any way someone could record them and post them somewhere (youtube maybe) so we could watch them at a later time?

Thanks.

re: X32 Discussion

ps has anyone else noticed the outputs do seem to be at a higher level on the x32 than the Ls9 or M7

I did a couple of gigs over the weekend just gone, with my X32. This is the first time I've had the X32 running with a PA system because the band are too darn lazy to get together and give me a proper rehearsal. I've done all my prep work on headphones.

I must say, my gain structure is all over the place with this new desk. I had input faders low, the master fader at less than half and I'm not entirely sure where to set my pre-amp gains on the meters. It seems to me that if they go into the yellow, by the time you add 20 odd more channels you end up clipping the power amps, which never used to happen on my analogue desk. This is my first foray into digital consoles so I guess I have a fair bit of learning to do.

Overall, the X32 performed brilliantly. As everyone else has done, I rate the internal FX as amazing for the price. The whole mix sounded much cleaner and the gates worked much better than my old rack of Behringer gates on drums. I easily separated out all the individual toms but this used to be a nightmare on the old gear.

The only issues I had really were with the little notebook computer I was using. My plan was to try out some multitrack recording. On the first night I recorded the whole first half of the gig and then when I stopped the recording, Reaper told me the drive was full. So I ditched that recording and moved the project directory to the second drive which was plenty big enough. I recorded some of the second half and then back at the hotel I tried to figure out how to get Reaper to play through my headphones on the laptop. I don't know Reaper so that's why I was struggling. I did get it working and found it to be a very clean recording.

On the second night, I had it all set up correctly but the laptop was running slow. I gave it a couple of reboots to fix that weird behaviour and then it lost the desk on the USB port. No matter how many times I rebooted, it never found the desk again. I'm fairly confident that a reboot of the desk would have brought it all to life again but we were going straight through (no interval). So I didn't attempt anymore.

All in all, great desk. I want some P16s! :)

re: X32 Discussion

Digital mixers usually reference to maximum output, so "0" on the output means you are at full maximum output, typically around +20 to +24 dBVU in the analog world.

0 DBFS means that you are out of digital "ones".

If you practice the old analog technique of setting input levels to "0" on the PFL meter, you will be far, far, far too hot. I suggest -20.

If you're already doing this, I have no idea what your problem could be but I'm sure others will have suggestions.

Might want to look back through the thread... There's a company that makes various right-angle USB cables.

Adding a way to save your own snippets for naming would be great, its a simple idea but it saves a lot of time...

Having EQ on the FX returns has to be a must.... please consider it...

Analog wise, even setting the gains to result in 0 dBu can result in a sum that's too hot. With 3 or 4 mics feeding a sub-group, I would normally shoot for -3 dBu on the channels, or even a bit lower.

I'm finding that with 3 or 4 mics feeding a sub-group, -20 dB on the X32 is too hot.

To help aid setup, with the flexible routing on the X32, you can feed a physical input to multiple channels.

re: X32 Discussion

For some reason the back panel leds on some of the channels are not on. It's input 4 & 9 thru 14 are all off.

I'm convinced they were all on a few days ago. I've tried the channels and they seem to work alright.

Any ideas?

The LEDs illuminate when phantom power is turned on to that individual channel.

re: X32 Discussion

I'm finding the XControl app really helpful to learn the desk. I wondered if a feature could be added. It would be really good for learning and when setting up a show offline to have a virtual signal, it would be so useful to confirm routing. I'm not a programmer so I don't know if its easy but it would be great

re: X32 Discussion

G'day Don,

I'm confident both would work. Right now, it's working with a Via chipset 3194 card, which was the last new 1394 card I threw at the old U-UF card. I haven't hit it hard yet as the studio is pulled to bits and I'm getting all the gear back in there (a new desk means a lot of redundant items.... even the racks need replacing now :)

Thanks
Pauly

re: X32 Discussion

Hi, just joined this thread after reading quite a few posts. Ordered the X32 today and expected delivery is in 3 days. That thing weighs quite a lot.

I've been looking at the X32 for quite some time and look forward to exploiting its many features.

The two old analogue mixers will be on standby for a while once the X32 arrives.

Already have the iPad app installed here.

Now to read more posts.
