X32 Discussion

Re: XControl Full Screen

This is an IBM x41T. with 12" Display 1024x768 - fits almost exactly with xcontrol.
Nice Zune theme, I thought I was the only person who used that.
The program is 1002x760... A bit odd if you ask me, especially because the height value (760) isn't really a standard fullscreen height for the standard 4:3 resolution that they seem to be aiming for... Nor does it take into account the standard height of the taskbar (between 30-35 pixels, depending on the version of windows), its right in between the two.

I know, not a lot of people have older laptops like myself and Walter with the 4:3 resolution, I think by now most have gone to widescreens so it may not make as much difference.

I do agree that a scaling option would be nice, but isn't high on my personal priority list.

I'm higher res / wide screen on my laptop, but I'd still love to be able to scale down to 1024X768, hide the taskbar, and have the app be fullscreen. I agree with you Chris. The native size of the app is really screwy. Oh well.. Whatcha want for nothin, right?

NOOB!

This gonna be long, so bear with me, it's gonna get good... I promise

First off, if this is Junior Varsity, then I'm more on the Pop Warner or little league level. I'll dare not set foot in the Varsity / Pro audio forum for fear of instant death...lol I'm a "Volunteer sound guy" at my church. For the last 40 years or so, I've tinkered around with bands and mixed some (as well as lights) and have done two different HoW runs. I've even hung out in a studio or two. I've mostly used (all analog) Peavey (just down the road), Mackie, Soundcraft, A&H, and even got to slide a few faders on an LS9 a couple times. I thought I knew a little about sound, and have been told by many I have a good ear / mix. My church is getting a new "professional audio contractor" installed system for the new building. I'm told the main FOH components are a dB Tech active T12 array / S30N subs, with a Behringer X32, 10 IEMs and some wedges. Excuse me, did you say Behringer? What kind of jake-leg outfit is this? That's worse than the Peavey junk we have now! My LS9 dreams are shattered... They say, go do some research on it. I start scouring the internet for any info I can find on the X-32. Bunches of youtube vids (I liked the 18 year old remark), Control Room, PSW, etc and I find a link to this monster thread. Three weeks ago I start at page 1. Then we get to today, I reach page 180, and find out the Mayans were wrong afterall. I almost feel like I know some of you guys after reading all of these posts. Wow! My "vision" of Behringer sure has changed in the last few weeks. I've found out that I "don't know diddly" about sound because most of you guys go right over my head.. I thought you can adjust the GEQ a little and spash in a little reverb and delay (in AUX 5&6) and "give me a little more guitar in AUX2 please"..lol, and that's running sound. Y'all lost me at Aux fed subs, and anything that said Sonar, Firewire, DAW, iPhone, etc., I started skipping about page 50...

Some observations:
The X-32 IS the game changer. I can't wait to get on this thing and jump into the digital world, even if I screw up. Our system should be deployed by February.
Christian, my hero... Uli himself ought to kiss you (or at least buy you a currywurst), you've probably sold a quarter of the 20k units sold to date, with your reports, and you seem to be an all around great guy. Per - I love your sarcasm. Eric H, Tim McCrusty:razz:, Nicks, Micks, and Marks - invaluable resources Coolest name award goes to - Othmane
Uli, Joe Sanborn, John DiNicola, Chris Painter, and Dennie and gang -
What a team! Now that is customer service that will change perception of even the most anti-B folks. I'll even proudly wear your shirt myself..
John Roberts (JR) - I'm sure you're a guy I'm most likely to meet, since we probably live less than 100 mi. from each other, and I would welcome the opportunity to pick your brain.
Edit: I forgot -Timo - you seem like acool guy,& my day job is with Metso, I'm sure you've herd of them...

Sorry to be so long, just excited as all-get-out to be here and looking forward to driving an all new X-32. So with that all said, I waited to the end of the thread to download Xcontrol for PC. Guess what? I'm lost as last year's Easter eggs.. I did, however, manage to get the channel strips labeled.... gonna be a long process for this ol' country boy..lol

ipad or ipad mini

My sister was so friendly to lend me her ipad (I'm on samsung galaxy tab android).
I used it last night, and I'm sure I don't want a smaller one. So the mini is off the list.

I had problems with the connection between the ipad and my router, losing a lot of times. Even if I was only a few meters from the router. Now this ipad had many network connections from the past, which I didn't want to screw up. So I had to choose the right network router a lot of times, to force a reconnect.

When I get my own Ipad, is there something I can do to improve connection behaviour?

ipad eq

I compared the response of the eq on the x32 screen with the ipad, they really do differ quite a bit. Can or will this be improved in future?
Also the separate controls, for the eq on the ipad is very useable, but I have seen other ways of doing it grabing the response drawing, that would be the bomb. :)
For now I'm glad I have that feature enabled.

Re: NOOB!

Welcome Nick. I would not try to over think things. The x32 is pretty straight forward. Watch the videos on Youtube (the Behringer videos from their webinars are a great place to start) and get a grip on all the functions. Play with the xcontrol and set up some aux sends and learn how to get to the channel dynamics and eq. I stepped onto the x32 and was up and running in less than 5 minutes. I did have the advantage of having used digital boards before but they are all different so I am not sure how much of an advantage that really was. I have been an analogue guy for almost ever and I found this an easy transition for me. In many ways, once you get used to it, you will find the internal routing to be a blessing. You should feel free to ask questions as I think many here will be glad to help you. Best of luck to you when you get to play with it.

Yes, never change wifi networks. :)

Sadly, an issue with the iPad (intended design fault) means that swapping network connections, especially if the iPad can see more than one on its "preferred" list, will potentially cause issues with network connections.

Personally, I have a stand-alone wifi network just for the X32 - it is the only way to get reasonable connections between iPad and mixer.

I have connected a conceptronic C150BRS4, wifi router. IP adres 192.168.0.1
I set my X32 to 192.168.0.2, gateway to 192.168.0.1, subnetmask 255.255.255.0

I set the ipad to static, with ip adres 192.168.0.4, subnetmask 255.255.255.0, router to 192.168.0.1 DNS also 192.168.0.1

No other computers are connected to this wifi router.

The X1 control mentions: This ipad 192.168.0.4 Subnet mask 255.255.255.0, but constant this disappears and then it asks for: select a network. If I choose the correct network, most of the time this comes back and the status changes to green, connected [192.168.0.2]

Just did a power down of the wifi router and for the moment it seems a bit better... Story continues

Per - I love your sarcasm.

Hmmm..., not really what I'm aiming for, trying to get my message across, be helpfull, get attention to my questions etc, while keeping the tone light, sometimes tongue-in-cheek and sometimes ironic but trying to stay away from downright sarcasm. So much for being successfull in that respect .
Glad you have enjoyed our rantings and ramblings.

Yes Nick, the X32 is a complete game changer for Behringer, as long as they all don't start falling apart in a year or so.

"Aux fed subs" is a basic mixing concept that goes back forever to the simplest analog consoles. You just use an aux bus to send the signal to your sub-woofers from each channel, as opposed to taking the sub signal from the main PA output. Thus you only get sub on the things that need it, like kick drum, bass, keys, music playback, etc. You don't get it on things that DON'T need it, like vocals, and especially spoken word mics, like a podium mic. The result is a much cleaner, punchier sound.

Protected Scenes

Well, I don't see any evidence that scene protection is going to be implemented for the X32. And I've noticed that other mixers in the same category (like the Soundcraft SI's) don't have it, so I guess it's not thought of as important in this area.

It really bugs me that, in this particular venue where I must have scene protection, I seem to have no choice other than a Yamaha 01V96, with 12 mic channels, as opposed to 32 on the X32, (so I have to buy a plug-in card,) and 4 omni outs as opposed to 16 on the X32,(so I have to use an external DA for the different parts of the sound system). And it will end up costing more than the X32! Just because it has scene protection!

Can any one of you geniuses out there suggest a way that I can have a default scene, that can't be overwritten except my me, that the maintenance crew can recall with just one button press (or two at the most), if they screw up the settings?

Thanks,
Mick Berg.

PS. And yes, I could even use the the crossover capability that was recently added to the X32. I poo-poo'd this idea at the time, now I'm eating large quantities of humble pie................. (that's not high blood pressure, it's embarassment:)~:)~)

Until you can lock out the console settings in some meaningful fashion, I'd skip using the desk to play crossover. I won't go into why (again) this is a shitty idea to start with, but suffice it to say that if you can't stop the maintenance crew from hosing your mix settings, what would be the result of changed SYSTEM settings? I see a bad moon rising, I see trouble on the way....

Hi Mick!

As I said before - Privileges are coming (at least this is what the Bee's have told us) and with that scene protection comes second nature. The Bee's said that they are looking into what is the most efficient way to implement privilegies given HoW and theatrical environments/requirements and are having an active dialog with some of them to sort this out.

As a workaround in the mean time would be to use an usb-dongle with write protection and keep your read-only scenes there. Then you can teach the soundguy(s) how to load scenes from it....

It would also be quite easy to write an osc-program (less than 50 lines of code) for a computer that loads specific scene data (or list a specific set of scenes to load) into the console.

Re: XiControl / XiQ

I was just wondering if there was a way to 'preview' all the features of the iPad version on my PC. I wasn't thinking that it would actually work live on a PC tablet, but just wanted to see how the XiControl version looked and functioned in a sort of 'demo' mode, as can be done with XControl.

Do you have an Apple store near you? You should be able to schedule a Personal Shopper appointment and just explain that you are considering the iPad but would like to see the xiControl app first - since it's free they should load it for you and let you play with it. and it does work offline similar to the PC app. I'd have them show it to you on the full size iPad as well as the iPad Mini - I was playing with the iPad mini in the store last night and I'm always amazed at how crazy thin and light it is. If you can operate the sliders and controls on the mini comfortably that would be the one I would get if I were getting a new iPad. Even though I really like my full sized iPad 3, the size and weight of the mini is very compelling.
