P16-M Power

I just got my P16M to play with. I thought that connecting just one to my X32 makes me not needing external power. I think I reed that you need the external power if you connect two or more in serial.
I´ve connected my P16 to my X32 ultranet but the lights doesn't go on before I connect the external power.

What am I missing?

Re: P16-M Power and label contrast

The Ultranet output from the X32 rear panel does not supply power.
I've fallen foul of that as well (my fault, didn't RTFM!).
Only the P16D is able to supply power over Ethernet (PoE) for the P16Ms.
If you're using two or more P16Ms, it's worth spending the extra cash on the P16D (I use 5 x P16Ms with my band).
Not having to worry about where to plug in the wall wart for each unit is worth the expense, imo.
I've mounted one on a mic stand and put it out front with the lead singer.
The only cable running to it is a long CAT5 cable.

As for the contrast of the text on the units in low light, invest in a £5 LED book light, or write some labels with a Brother PTouch or similar.
I did the latter with mine, as we're using all 16 channels.
No complaints so far.

Karl.

I think you ASSUMED that it would work with just one P16M unit. I believe during the demo I got from the behringer rep back last year, he mentioned you would require a POWERPLAY 16 P16-D if you did not wish to use the included power adapter. No power would be driven up the ethernet cable without using a POWERPLAY 16 P16-D
. But I've been wrong before :)

Re: P16-M Power and label contrast

Is it really, truly PoE? I assumed that it was something different, since the power supply on the P-16's is 12VDC instead of 48VDC (or similar).

If it is actually PoE, couldn't you use a run-of-the-mill PoE injector?

Hi Guys,

The P16 does NOT use standard PoE (power over ethernet), it is our own system so please only use P16D or any P16 powered output.
I suggest using the P16D as it offeres 8 powered outputs and eliminates having to use wall wart power supplies. The only time you need to use these is if you use the Thru jack between 2 P16M mixers.

Re: P16-M Power and label contrast

It's not a true POE system, that polls the device first, then when get gets the right answer turns on it's power... this is a proprietary POE system (that has it's power on all the time), it will not work with off the shelf network hardware. I'm fine with that, actually. The cost of the POE switches for other systems runs between $650-$1250 (aviom, roland, mymix), so since this one is only around $200, I can buy multiples with backups and still have money left in my pocket!

Now, I love the M48 and the Mymix systems, they sound great, they are very flexible and are easy to use (especially the M48), but you don't always need that in every situation. Thanks Beringher!

As far as the label thing goes, how about a good old strip of thin white board tape and (sharp) sharpie?

Re: P16-M - Cannot read the pot & button labels!

This is a forum to seek assistance & make requests on x32 relkated matters, yes? Yes.

Those plastic printed sheets that adorn the P16-Ms are low contrast - too low to be useful in many musical environments - Granted, in your type of environments, you probably have all the house lights on 100%, but in many that I frequent there's coloured lights, flashing, smoke, and all sorts of hoo ha going on. So much so, that those pesky little buggers get hard to read..So - I requested a high contrast label from behringer.. I didn't feel they were _responsible_ for it... I was making a suggestion and would gladly purchase said sheets.

Thanks for your great advice.

Anyway - I've wasted too many key strokes on yet another arrogant, no help, internet know it all.

Does this mean the honeymoon is over?

Realistically, Behringer targeted this mixer as a predominately LIVE mixer. In my experience (35+ years so far), anyone who can't see something on stage requests a small light. Guitarists with stomp box pedal boards, drummers that do their own IEM mixes, keyboard players that need to see controls, etc.

I don't see how your studio situation is different. As the studio owner, why not address this self-created problem with a self-created solution?

Easy there..... I've gotta say, your problem is awfully "niche".

For about the price of a "high contrast label", a pretty simple solution:

Re: P16-M - Cannot read the pot & button labels!

I'm quite amazed at how reluctant some of you are to accept the existence of a problem and a request to solve that problem. You are saying the problem doesn't exist, and when the nonexistent problem arises we solve it by attaching a light. I would have thought that designing a product to be better suited to the environment it invariably is going to be used in, would be a good thing, but no "we don't want a better product because we have our old pita solution that we like to stick with".
I don't mind the solution when that is what is available, but my experience is that I never have enough clip-on lights once I let the cat out of the bag, and I hate having to constantly replace those triple-A batteries that most of these clip-ons come with :x~:-x~

Re: X-Control and Win8

I was thinking of getting a Windows "iPad" and was wondering if the touch works well, maybe better than a mouse??

Mine is an Lenovo X61 with a stylus, a few pages back I commented about running a show with a mouse and accidentally clicking the wrong part of a gain knob during sound check, causing the gain to jump and cause some nasty feedback. The solution was to hover over a knob and use the mouse wheel to make adjustments, more of a "don't touch the hot coals and you won't get burnt" kind of solution.

I wouldn't run a show using XControl and a touch screen personally. XiControl works great on my iPad.

In all seriousness, this would fix his issue
Epson® LabelWorks Glow-In-The-Dark LC Tape Cartridge EPSLC4ZBU1

personally I don't see it as a problem as Jeff mentioned it's a pretty specific issue which could easily be remedied by increasing the lighting, or adding personal lighting "stations"... Maybe a Pm16S for studio, or L for lighted could be released somewhere down the road for all you studio cats. My initial impression of this console is it is a live sound console first, with the ability to have personal monitoring control ( think House of worship ) with the option of being a studio console as well... maybe it's because that's where my focus is. I am now waiting to be brought out into the town square and flogged.

I also use the XControl using a Lenovo X61 tablet with a stylus pen. I like the precision control the stylus offers. Even if my fingers are allover the screen, nothing changes, it only responds to the stylus pen. I don't think you would be happy with XControl software on a touch screen. Go with the regular XiControl and an iPad if you want a touch screen setup.

Re: P16-M - Cannot read the pot & button labels!

I disagree.

My work is often if not always in the dark or near dark, and low-contrast tan lettering on brown background (or whatever it is in this case) is bad design IMHO. Soundcraft and Mackie analog consoles have (or had) this problem, too, and I solved it for me with stick-on lettering. These digital devices are so relatively tiny and tightly packed that user labeling is much more difficult.

Another thing that has bugged me about the X32 itself is the unlit dark-ish lettering of the db scale next to the LED meter ladder. If it were softly backlit that would be sufficient, but as it is (unless there's a preference I'm not finding when specifically looking  ), I can't tell where the hell I am except in the middle or near an end. And yes, I have a Littlelite on board which doesn't help, but the contrast between the brightly lit LED ladder and the unlit dark-lettered numbers is too great to read. I *could* add location indicators (like a mark at -12 or -18), but the designers *could* also have done something which makes it more ergonomically friendly.

Clearly, different users have different opinions, and I don't think anyone is wrong except as it relates to their own usage. Working in the dark or twilight is widespread in our industry IMO.

Edit: And yes, I'm aware the LED ladder changes colors and brightness...

I use this

Amazon.com: JVCC GLW Glow in the Dark Tape: 1/2 in. x 30 ft. (Luminescent Lime Green): Home Improvement

which is way cheaper and can be written on with a water soluble marker, allowing easy changes for things that change, or a fine point Sharpie for those that don't change.

All of this glow-in-the-dark stuff only remains charged for a little while, though.
