X32 Discussion

Re: X32 Discussion

I know custom layers have been suggested before for the console, and I'm sorry if this has already been mentioned, but having a custom layer for the iPad app seems easy to program. I find myself assigning single channels to a DCA, just so I can live on the DCA layer and have quick control of my FX returns. It would be nice to have an 8 fader custom layer where I can have my drums DCA on fader 1, then choose to have single channel of lead guitar next to it. The idea is so I can tweak EQ's, comps, delays directly from the "DCA" layer without first navigating to the actual channel layer and entering those parameters.

This would be great, I too find dca control of drums & keys, bas & guitar channels, vocal (lead), fx send (or return) one 1 page very helpfull. The real downside of the app at the moment is the switching between the pages.

It would also be good on the iPad app if you could have the option to scroll side-to-side through the channels rather than selecting a bank of eight.

There are a couple of iPad piano apps that have this function.
It's so annoying the apps are unusable on the device itself.
When you touch the screen to press a key or keys, any sideways motion, no matter how small, sends the keyboard moving.
What you had your finger over a second ago, is now way off the screen.
You have to slide it all back and start again.

Personally, I've made use of the DCAs.
Lead Vox
Bvox
Gtr1
Gtr2
Bass
Keys
Drums
FX

It's all on one screen. No scrolling necessary.

Maybe add the scroll function, but give users the option to switch it off.....?

Karl.

Scrolling is maybe ok when you only have two pages (1-8, 9-16). But if there are a lot of channels (48 in, 24 busses, 8 DCAs) a precise scrolling will be almost impossible. So you will spent too much time to find the correct channels. IMO is the existing jump area more useful.

Let's have both, like today but with swipe.

Hey guys,
Just checkin back in with a clip of a wedding band i worked with recently. X32 and pm16 for all. All sounds you hear are direct to the usb drive.
I love this console!

Great band! Audio is good too. I'd love to hear more of cantaloop :)

But what's up with those headphones? Just take a look at the sax player...

I've only used the usb-recorder once or twice but I only get the dreaded FoH-mix with less than balanced levels. Do you guys who've made usb recordings create a matrix mix or maybe an aux mix?

Re: X32 Discussion

for the life of me I still can't figure out where 32+ Input channels are needed for your normal group. I've received several riders this year, the largest one had 36 inputs, which was obviously "expanded" to get out of the 32 input desk region. MOST are under 24, so I don't get the need for more than 32 channels, except the the "penis" factor.

Totally agree. Typical band can get away with 24 or even 16 stage inputs (like in good old analog days, 24-channel snake was fine). But it's the difference between client's "wants" and "needs". For some 40 or 48 is the magic number that gets you a gig, even if only half of them will be actually used. Call it "penis" or whatever factor.

Re: X32 Discussion

At 32 channels it's already a hit. A higher input count would put it squarely in competition with the flagship Midas brand. I'd be very surprised if the X32 became an X48.

Looks like it, marketing reasons rather than technical. Uli Behringer could've easy stamped X32 "MIDAS LE" or something like that (same designers, same Behringer-owned factory in China). Even at doubled price they would sell like hot cakes, but surely would kill sales of Pro 1 and Pro 2 MIDAS desks. Kind of what happened with Yamaha when M7 came out, it cut PM5D sales quite a bit.

The idea of X48 is still in the air. Hopefully they will follow the marketing trend, to saturate the market with X32 first, then come with X48, making everyone want to upgrade. Like Apple does with iPhones.

Re: X32 Discussion

Most of the bands in the NYC jewish wedding circuit are free lance. So I could be with the same "band" three nights in a row and not see the same guys twice. The standard in this circuit has become to use personal monitors instead of wedges. Most of the players are doing 200+ gigs a year. wedges can take a giant toll on ur hearing. So they are all requesting avioms etc.
As much as i like mixing monitors and getting all the guys happy every night its much easier for them to dial in their own mix by themselves plus it makes my life easier.
Re the cans. according to players bc they are freelance and not with the same band members/sound co every night they dont want to have the sound shoved in their ears, they want something they can quickly take off.
So i figure if i like to monitor with senni 280s might as well give em around to the whole band. What can you do?

Yes, I feed the usb via matrix. But its the same feed as foh. i send to foh via matrix as well. so I eq the matrix for room eq not the L/R bus. plus most of the gig I do are big enough so that the usb mix sounds full...

Re: X32 Discussion

I was just thinking about this today. To a point I agree. But then at some point when X32 sales finally stall enough due to market saturation, and smaller iterations are already out there so I'm not sure how much more market penetration there'd be for any future 'mini X32's', some bean counter is going to say "Hey... what about a 48 channel version?". Maybe there's been resistance to that already. Maybe there'll be company resistance to that idea tomorrow. But I wonder once sales start declining enough on the X32 if there's really an option to not go 48 eventually?

Of course that's not tomorrow so anyone waiting on an X48 is probably going to be without a Behringer digital for quite some time.

As to those that wondering when 32 isn't enough.... When you have multiple bands and want neat, efficient changeovers. Of course there's other ways to skin a cat...

X48, or whatever it will be called, will definitely come, the only question is when. Behringer folks were always good in marketing (hey, they are Germans after all!). Their traditional market is low-end, wannabee enthusiasts, weekend musicians and the like. They hit its higher segment already with original X32, small soundco, churches, clubs and established bands, now they will saturate its middle and low sectors with scaled-down versions. When X48 will come out, high-end customers will have to dump their X32 and get X48 ("I have more channels than other guys"), so this market segment will open again. Uli is smart, whatever people bitch about him, he's on track to build Harman-like sound empire. Kind of like Volkswagen that made a fortune making simple and cheap cars for everyone and already owns Audi, SEAT, ŠKODA, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche, Ducati and other high-end brands. X32 is a hit, just look at the number of pages in this thread, over 350. Hey, if someone would tell me a year ago that you can have full blown digital mixer with remote stageboxes, DAW interface and personal monitoring for fraction of a used M7CL-32 price, I'd be laughin. Now it's reality.

Btw, I think X32 has the ability to switch between two sets of stageboxes, for festivals changeovers. There's YouTube video on S16 by Behringer, actually their webinar recording on that, very informative.

Re: X32 Discussion

Actually, if you think about it, X64 is a more practical approach.
Take the X32, change the software to allow access to both AES50-A and AES50-B simultaneously (that's your 64 channels instantly) and add some hardware.
That would be a few buttons, to allow for selection of layers 33-48 and 49-64 and some internal stuff (i.e. double the processing power to cater for the doubled channel count). OK it's never that simple. Ever tried adding a second CPU to your laptop or PC? A new mobo would need designing and building.
Then ditch the on-board pre-amps, as connection would be made with one of the four S16's connected on the stage end.

The basic workflow would stay the same, as would the general layout (why create work when there's nothing overly wrong with the current design?), which should keep the costs down.

This reduces the actual desk to little more than a remote control unit for the stageboxes (hello iLive....), but keeps the overall format the same.

Then again, why not just add another 16 faders and have 32 channels available on one layer, etc....?

Karl.

P.S. I want the moon on a stick as well!

Re: X32 Discussion

Is it possible to pan stereo Bus mixes from the iPad app? Our band runs stereo in-ears and we need the ability to pan sources in our mixes from iPads on stage. I suspect this is currently not possible and this is the sole reason our band has not replaced our SL24 with an X32.

I suggested this on a Behringer X32 Webinar and they said they wanted the Ipad to follow the X32 desk format. I think they are missing the point as the Ipad app is a different animal and should be programmed to take advantage of, or adjust for limitations of the Ipad itself. I agree I want to move the channels I need to get to, all on one screen. I only mix by ipad. (I do sound for my son's jazz band)

I have a SL 16.0.2 now and I can get to all channels on one page of the SL Ipad app. Way more convenient. I plan on upgrading to a X32 Rack when it comes out and would like to be able to get to everything quickly.
