X32 Discussion

Re: Sticky Buttons

Just tried the Behringer X32 with Ubuntu Studio Linux, it popped up in JACK with no trouble, though it goes a bit funny if I reboot the console without first shutting down the server... I also need to pay attention to bitrates, as if I try to feed in the wrong bitrate of audio it will try to play anyway.

USB only, no firewire

Currently running 10 tracks from Ardour in to the console, and it hasn't missed a beat, meanwhile also feeding two channels from a SPDIF interface in to the console as well (that was my reason for attempting... a digital in bridge)

Re: X32 Discussion

...Is Mute information transmitted over MIDI? In other words, can I interface a tactile system that would give indication of a muted channel?

Hi Aaron,

We plan adding a couple of MIDI controls to the implementation, specifically for faders and mutes. This might become available with one of the next firmware updates, however - I cannot give any details, yet.

When you plan setting up a tactile interface, I would recommend basing it around the X32's OSC protocol via Ethernet. This is much more powerful, providing access to all sorts of parameters in the console, it is readily available and it does not depend on MIDI.

Best,
Jan

X32 Rack - ladies and gentlemen - place your orders now !!

Hello folks

I know that there is another thread for X32R - but I am sure many of you are interested to hear, that I just placed an order for one unit at Musikhaus Thomann - 1047.58 EUR + tax - available sometimes..........

Last year I got my X32 on wednesday after world release on friday - hope it goes as well this time.

Re: X32 Rack - ladies and gentlemen - place your orders now !!

Funny, just got a reply back from Thomann on saturday that they didn't take any preorders, and it doesn't come up when I search for it.

Re: X32 Rack - ladies and gentlemen - place your orders now !!

Hi

It does not come up when you search it - but if you telephone them, they will do it. I can see mine in "my orders"... and there is a reservation made on my VISA-account.

OK, got it, but they've alreaady hiked the price to 1091 euros
The curse of living in Norway

EDIT: Had to do it on the phone, the item number doesn't give anything in a search.

OK, now we have to really nag the Behringer development team to get the firmware the way we want it to integrate all this stuff.

Great news, midi fader and mutes are just the thing for show control, so I'm sure a few theatre users are going to be happy about that.

Re: X32 Rack

So, with the new X32 rack or core, will there be a way for the console to be able to automatically load a preset scene on boot? Will there also be a way to lock this scene down so that it cannot be overwritten? If we are expected to use this in an install, this would be mandatory, and if it does not have that function, it would cause me to look to another product for a solution (M200i). If the client can mess things up, they will... any way to make it load a scene at startup from a write protected thumbdrive or something? I'm also concerned that since Starin only has "15" of each model on order right now, and arrival is guesstimated at 9-18-13, that the unit won't be available till well into 2014.

A question or suggestion for the development team. Could you make the X32s look for a file called boot.scn or boot.shw at bootup, the same way it looks for a firmware update?

Wow - way cheaper than I thought it would be. Thanks for the hint!
The X32Rack is really nice...but the Compact also.
Will buy one or the other...

Re: Sticky Buttons

Hi Misja,

This website has several fora (forums) on it: Varsity, Junior Varsity, and some more. The definition of what belongs in each forum is posted on the main forums page; JV is "Topics for weekend warriors, hobbyists, and our other "friends with a day job"."

This thread is in the Junior Varsity Forum. That's where my clear definition of levels comes from, not from my personal feelings or ideas about who could or should post here.

Dan

PS You had post 5900!

I stand corrected. Anyways you seem like a cool cat! And doing some nice efforts.. I personally because it's already there will stick to copper snakes.

Pre amps

I've been working with the X32 for two weeks now. I apply my golden rule on mixing with a digital desk (not gaining to loud). I'm working with some recordings going over firewire for the first time.

But there is distortion or overdrive everywhere. It makes things harsh A little distortion is fine with me. I do that willfully in studio mixes. But i like recordings to be clean.

Is this normal? I can send an example after exporting is done.

Grtz,
Misja

How loud is not too loud? The recording specialists on the forum can probably answer, but the quick test I did with firewire when I first got the desk seemed to suggest you have to keep it fairly moderate, like below -22 dBFS. I haven't tried since then, since my only FW laptop is dead and none of my other laptops seems to be able to get anything but crap through the USB.

Re: Pre amps

I keep it at that level more or less. The sweet spot for desks like this seems to be around -6 Db in general. That's where the Pre's are good. -22Db is not much on a crowded night not withour crancking up the pa system and we shouldn't want that. I would declare as well that the X32 likes hotter levels. What i am experiencing is something different. Live it sounds good. Although it has that same thing most digital mixers have. It can be a bit harsh. Believe me my gain staging is allright. In a recording i discover the funny stuff. Live it's absolutely no problem. Maybe it's the console i'm having. But is distorting a bit. It could be jitter and in a live situation not so noticable back at the studio i can clearly hear it and find it annoying.

Re: Pre amps

Dear Guys,

The "X32 Engineers' Quickstart Guide" has been added to the X32 Downloads tab on the X32 product page.
This is a PDF version for anyone not on an iPad.

Behringer: DIGITAL MIXER X32

Note, the iPad version can be found on the Apple App Store.

I hope it helps!

-6dB is very hot.
That should be about +12dBu, so +8dB on most analog sound consoles...

I ran it mostly at maximum -18dBFS

If you have to cranck it up to that level to fully output your system, you should consider to alter (rise) your gain structure behind the desk.
