X32 Discussion

re: X32 Discussion

Hi James,
only the X32 has a fan, but you won't recognize it. I never got it to work, so I taped all ventig slots on my desk and after a while it starts...very low in volume. The R&D said to me, that the fan is basically hardly ever needed, the board would work even without it. The s-16 has no fan. Clocking over AES50 is easy. Every piece of gear (s-16) locks itself into the sync, no need to dive into settings or setups. The recordingcard (respectively the X32) is master and your DAW locks in as slave.
Christian

So the fan on the x32 only spins up when the board is at some temperature? Below this the fan is not spinning at all, or just very slowly? Nice to hear the S16 has no fan, so they could be used in a studio recording room where no noise at all is the goal?

Respectfully, regarding the clocking, I am after a more technical understanding of how it works, but also how it is implemented with the Behringer setup. You say there is no need to go into settings, but are there any settings at all?

I was looking here:
http://www.aes-media.org/sections/u...lker - Applications in Live Convert Sound.pdf

Page 17 shows the pinout for AES50 signal on an RJ45, and this shows that technically a crossover cable should be required to connect two pieces of equipment. Since this is never mentioned anywhere I guess the AES50 connections are "auto sensing" and compensate automatically when not using crossover cables, similar to the Ethernet cards in most current computers?

Traditional best practice for clocking is to have one central source and distribution point, then every piece of gear takes a feed of wordclock.

Of course it it possible to "daisy chain" wordclock, and I'm sure many people work like this. The problem is though that often it can be unclear if a wordclock "output" is simply just a "thru" or if it is separate output, and if it is an output, is it a buffered version of the input, or a regenerated one, or something else?

Theoretically through daisy chaining wordclock, propagation delay can occur. Whereby the last device in an IN-OUT-IN-OUT chain can receive wordclock slightly late compared with the first device in the chain.

That PDF about MIDAS and AES50 says that there are no clocking issues with large systems only connected by AES50, but it doesn't say why.

Still, there must be one clock master, and I feel uneasy about letting the system choose for me.

As it stands, the behringer system of X32 and S16 units has no clock inputs, so they clearly see it as being standalone without the option of integration into a larger production. However, there is always the option of using your Behringer system as a clock source for other gear, there is an AES out on the X32 and ADAT on the S16. If for example I had two X32 and four S16 all connected together, I would like to know who is the clock master out of all of that, then I can lock anything else I would like to the clock master.

Alternativelly, with something like the Klark Tecknik DN9650, if you introduce that anywhere in the AES50 chain, can that then become clock master and everything else slave? Then it would be possible to lock your whole behringer system to one wordclock or video in?

re: X32 Discussion

Arrg...what have I done!?
There is no need to worry! Just use the usb port, raise the buffer size and I will work...for sure!
If it works with my Acer One, it will work with every laptop or desktop PC build in the last decade.
Don't forget, that the recording straight to USB (probably with 24tracks) will also come sometime.

Sold out at Thomann means, that they have lot's of preorders, where all their doards are going to. I dosen't mean imho that they don't got consoles at all.
Christian

That is comforting - and as said think the direct to HD vis USB will be a welcome development.

on a different tack re using the x32 as a control surface and say routing the recorded multi-track audio through the X32 in order to use the x32 dynamics and effects when mixing a recording -if you want automation can changes in settings on the x32 (including changes in dynamics / effects etc) be recorded via the embeded midi on the pC daw? - probably have not worded that very well!!!!

(re thomann realise sold out on pre-orders - just wondering whether their initial delivery date had gone back or the Sept one is the next batch - seems like probably the latter).

Yes

Not at all

right:)

concerning the AES50 clock stuff...I don't have clue. I hooked it up and it works, that's all I need.
You can set the S-16 as a master and a second as slave...to imitate a analog core. But I don't get the
the option of integration into a larger production
?
What would you like to add/see?

I don't know, but I doubt. In addition, the automation features in a modern DAW are way better than in a console.
I know, there are users that want to mix over a console. Personally I skipped that in the late 90ties. Once the signals are in the box, I would mix there. But this is just how I roll:)
Sorry, I don't know, if it is possible.

i would be interested to see if there are any pictures of the setup screen? or physical switches on the S16 or X32?

no manual yet...........

re: X32 Discussion

Hi James,

in the X32 you can choose "Local, AES50 A, AES50 B and Card" as sync. Masters. On the S-16 there is a setup, where you can choose between Master or Slave. That's all. Default setting on the X32 is "Local" (The console is Master), the S-16 lock themself into the sync (baout 3 seconds).
Hope that helps.

Thanks, useful to know. But with the S16 no way to know if your locked to AES50 A or B?

Another question, do the current settings (as in EVERY setting) come back the same if you power off and on the x32 or s16? I know the Yamahas are good that even if you haven't saved anything, if the power goes then you turn it back on and everything comes back exactly the same.

If you use Input A on the console, it will lock to A. Also there is a icon in the LCD display, that will tell you if A or B is in sync (green dot). If the sync get's lost, the dot will trun red.

Good question about storering. The X32 saves automatically every one or two minutes. So you will loose maybe one or two minutes of your work, when faceing a power loss.
I normaly use a UPS for bigger/improtant gigs, so I don't mind:)

re: X32 Discussion

Do you mean the X32 app or SOS app?

The actual app for the IPAD to control an X32 console, it looks a lot like Midas Mixtender- I would contend that the X32 will be a springboard for those moving onto larger Midas digital consoles, similiar to the 01V getting people on the path of understanding Yamaha desks-

I strongly recommend a UPS for anything digital. I have been using one at FOH for the last several years and had no problems with anything whatsoever there. The only thing to remember is to have some kind of indicator when you lose power, such as a light plugged in pre UPS, or you are liable to be running your show on battery and not know it. You usually can't hear the alarm with all the show going on and if you have the UPS at the bottom of the rack or in the back you most likely will not see the indicator lights as well.

Search x32 or XIcontrol, it is developed by The Music Group

re: X32 Discussion

I guess Frank is referring to some news about the app, that it is not actually available for download.
Or if I am mistaken, maybe Frank could supply us with the link.
I need an excuse to go out and buy an iPad :D~:-D~

Edit: Found it http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin...s.apple.com/us/app/xicontrol/id542646451?mt=8

Here: http://discchord.com/blog/2012/7/19/even-more-digital-mixer-controller-apps.html

(Running outside looking for an Apple Store, see ya)
New edit: didn't actually find it in the iTunes store

"Not available in the US Store"

denied! lol

The App is available from the Apple app store, you have to have an IPAD to run it- this is not the offline editor, though I look forward to that when it comes out in the next weeks. Sorry for any confusion on that.

I am in Chicago and loaded it on my IPAD this morning no issues BTW- I can send photos later but they are what you see on the link above-

Christian,

Whats your thinking on the thomann flight case? Plenty of room for airflow? I read the fan "must not" be restricted?

Btw, no sign of the app on the uk store at the moment.
