X32 Discussion

re: X32 Discussion

Thanks to reports from some forum members we have been made aware of a noise issue affecting certain X32 consoles. The issue is generally reported as increased noise on channels 16 and 32.

Since the first report of this issue we have obtained one of the affected consoles and identified both the source of the noise and the relatively simple fix. During production a limited number of consoles were wired with an internal cable improperly routed too close to the mic preamp boards, resulting in the inducted noise from the control cables.
Properly rerouting the short cable solves the issue permanently.

We will soon post a service advisory how to address the issue and will make this right.

Uli

Hearing about real technical reasons for problems is refreshing and welcome. Thanks.

Re: Thon case for x32

Now this is more like it.

What is the finish on the dogbox?

Is the roof of the bogbox deep enough to fit a macbook pro?

Doesn't have wheels or a nosecone though.

I wonder what Behringer are considering if they really are going to ship a case for the mixer?

What is the airflow through the mixer? Is the fan on the bottom an intake fan with hot air meant to come out the vents on the top of the console?

A case with a nosecone could work well with a channel cut in the foam allowing air to come in from underneath the mixer and exit through the vents at the top which are not covered by a dogbox.

Uli,

Apart from the real interest in this content of this note ( an iphone personal mix app would be just fantastic) , this did make me smile as I am sure you probably were given the advice not to post this info yet. However I'm very pleased you did. Just wish I could actually receive my X32, still none in the UK that I'm aware of.

regards

Mike
I have been using the latest beta of the upcoming Version 2 XiControl iPad app for the X32 and thought I’d share it with you on this forum.

Since we released Version 1 some weeks ago, many of you have asked about added functionality including effects processing and other control from the iPad app. While we are not ready to release V2 just yet and it will take some more months, the following screen shot will give you some idea of where we’re going with XiControl.
We're also currently developing a very cool iPhone Personal Monitor Mix app. As mentioned earlier, this is just the beginning of a series of revolutionary products surrounding the X32 and all other consoles to follow.

Of course this is all pre-release and completely against the advice of our software team so keep it between us; I wouldn’t want to get in trouble.:)

re: X32 Discussion

Dear Mike,

thanks for your kind comment.

I can imagine how frustrating it must be to wait for your X32, however I can assure you that a large amount of containers are on the way to the UK as well as other areas of Europe.

We are doing our very best to try to fulfill all current backorders. However the demand is so overwhelming, that we predict that it will likely take until end of the year to catch up.

Thanks for your patience.

Uli

re: X32 Discussion

Even though this is a small sample, it is impressive that the X32 came out on top. The folks that did the listening tests are all highly experienced and critical listeners. It's hard to argue with a 'blind test' where the listeners did not know which console they were evaluating. Conrats to Behringer!

Maybe someone from Behringer can confirm, but based on my X32, it feels like the fan on the bottom is an exhaust fan, that draws air in through the vents on the top of the mixer, and sents the heat out through the bottom of the mixer. If that is correct, then case makers will need to be careful to allow for that when building cases.

It hardly matters, with a low pressure - low velocity fan, the effect of any but the flimsiest (like a very thin sheet of paper) obstruction will be the same whether it blows or sucks.

Re: Thon case for x32

Not to sway the X32 thread too much but in regards to the S16. I thought about using this to add 16 preamps to my 01v96 mixer via the 16 channels of adat out. It would be a pretty handy converter. I don't see any word clock inputs on the unit. Would I have to clock my o1v96 to the S16 or is there a word clock input I don't see? I'm guessing the Adat out on it does carry the word clock.

2nd question. Can the usb out be used to feed a laptop as an example to feed my Reaper recording software or is it just for remote control of the rack?

Thanks for any information.

Re: Thon case for x32

Hey guys, I thought I'd just share a couple of pics of the case I just had made for the x32. it was made by a local company here in the Houston, TX area. SAFECASE | Your one stop source for the best in quality custom ATA cases it was basically made to my specs, I didn't want a full blown doghouse, but I did want a little extra space in the back.
The mixer actually sits on a thin board, which sits on the bottom foam (to prevent the rubber feet from sinking into the foam over time) I wanted to make sure the vent in the bottom wasn't blocked.

The owner of the company told me that he actually built several different cases for the x32 (with and without doghouse), and he will have the pics on his website in a few days.

Hi,
There is no clocking device on the S-16. The S-16 get's its clock with the AES50 stream. Maybe it could work, if you set the S-16 as master and the 01V96 as slave. The S-16 has ADAT outs only. But I'm not sure about it!
The USB on the desk is not functional by now, but you can hook up your Reaper daw to the USB output of the recording card for recording the 32 inputs of the X32.

Very refreshing, indeed!

I was extremely impressed in the proof of the process that is in place.

When you think about having a system in place to find and work this type of problem through, in this amount of time, it’s not as easy as one might think. Many companies (especially larger ones) get stymied in bureaucracy.

I posted the problem late Thursday night (PST). Greg posted the next day. By Saturday night (PST), Behringer had found a board with the same problem, diagnosed the problem, determined the solution, and Uli Behringer himself posts.

Having that type of turnaround reflects having people and processes in place and functioning well. A global company can’t put that in place overnight. That indicates it was thought out, and already in place.

Thanks, Arturo, for posting the photos and info about the nice case from SAFECASE.

I'll give them a call.

Interesting to see problems like this play out in public. I suspect Uli has a mature engineering change process in place, while his personal attention will no doubt speed these changes along. Since he is limited by constraints like time being unidirectional (only moves forward), there are containers on the water and products in customers hands with differing degrees of possible noise issues.

This appears to be a relatively simple problem to fix, since it doesn't involve shutting down the entire supply chain to incorporate changes to lower level components or sub assemblies. The final fix may involve design changes to make it harder for the factory to assemble it wrong, but those can be phased in.

Global companies can often identify problems quickly, correction is the "biotch" and can drag out months and longer, not because of bureaucracy, but because of simple logistics. Suppose instead of simply moving a wire away from the noise source he had to change to a different connector on both ends of that noisy cable to say accommodate shielding and a connection for that. That would mean engineering changes that would have to be incorporated into both raw PCBs before they get fabricated, and sourcing production quantity of the new connectors and cable before board level assembly. When problems reach deeper into the supply chain to involve unique components. the time line to correct can get even longer. Then what do you do about all the production in flow? This can become pretty painful, expensive, and disruptive when an engineering change involves a high volume product with strong sales. As it is, products with this potential flaw will keep showing up in the distribution channel for some time longer unless there is some 100% barrier inspection of suspect shipments at delivery (see what I mean about expensive). With all the buzz, and pre-sales this product has garnered, you don't want to remove it from the market for even a couple months.

They dodged a bullet, if this can be fixed by simply adjusting the lead dress, while one can question if one or more balls were dropped along the way. Was this missed at final QA, or did the lead dress change between final QA and delivery? Was this mechanism unknown to designers (I kind of doubt that).

I wouldn't read too much, either pro or con into this. This is still early days and we need to see more gigs under the belt to get a true read on long term robustness of these units. With complex new product roll-outs "stuff" always happens. If this is the worst of it, they did pretty good.

re: X32 Discussion

Hi,

after two weeks of playing with the X32 at home and at rehearsals/gigs all i can say is wow.
It easily took everything i threw at it, sounds great and is easy to use.
(Thanks again to Christian for the tons of information he provided.)

BEHRINGER folks, if you read this:
Some nitpicks:

- please give us autorepeat for the backspace button ...

- please let us cycle through tabs and/or (preferably 'and') give us autorepeat for the arrow keys

- please implement some kind of folder structure for FX presets. It's annoying to have to crawl through all presets of all FX when looking for one particular preset for one particular FX engine. This also goes for dynamics & EQ.

- channels 1 and 2 of the card inputs show up as 'C' in the scribble strips, whereas all other channels show up with 'C'+channel#

- How exactly am i supposed to register my X32 ?

thanks
Joachim
