X32 Discussion

Re: X32 Discussion

Yes, an Android app will be cool, but I think that ultimately the more significant statement is that the protocol will be public. I think I've heard before that it will be, but I haven't seen an API published. Plenty of people in audio have experience in coding, and I think we'll see very useful code development come out of the user community.
The OSC/midi-dox are available since a couple of months ago....

They only need to be updated with the new info about the matrixes.

Re: X32 Discussion

Hmmmmm...., it is almost difficult to be excited, because Uli just took our wishlist and made it happen without any surprises :D~:-D~

iX16..check, loose the analog gainpots....check, still wondering if you can use it with the iPad plugged straight in, sort of looks like it won't work without a WiFi router, but.......

Producer and Compact very close to each other, would have thought more would separate them, would be difficult to decide which one to get except if you need AES/EBU, only the Compact of the new stuff has got it, hmmmm..........

Core and Rack, oh boy are they going to sell, anyone with an iPad and a S16 would be insane not to get at least one of them. I'm probably going to miss the Auxes on the Core, but one can't have everything....just buy one of each I guess.

The competition has to step up now, or it really is game over.

Have you seen the new Soundcraft Si Expression yet? Soundcraft SI Expression! « G-Force Pro Audio

It might just be me, but I don't see how/ where the 1U core fits in... can someone give me a real world scenerio where this might be used. unless you were EXTREMELY comfortable with ipad mixing, I don't see where this fits. Are we talking install application, or what?

I couldn't quite figure out from their Utube video what exactly triggers the backlight on the faders (FaderGlow), but from the little bit I saw it seems to make it easy to keep track of the channels. It could be used to good effect.

A quote from Soundcraft in this article: “The Si Expression is based on new technology bridging the current Si Compact and Si Performer ranges and meets a totally new price point for Soundcraft making this product highly attractive to those looking for a professional console, at a budget price. Other companies will continue to produce ‘cheap’ mixers, we make professional, high-quality, easy to use mixers in the same price range—which makes the customer’s decision easier!”

If I had to guess, I'd guess between $7,000 and $9,000 USD, street price. I'm thinking that they see A&H as their competition for this board. Or do you think they'll try to actually release their "professional, high-quality, easy to use mixers in the same price range" of the X32?

Agree - but could use with x control and a direct Ethernet connection with a certain amount of confidence - a little more development needs imo to be diverted from the xicontrol to this to make it fully viable (especially with windows 8 touch).

The X32 rack looks perfect for a band travelling with their own monitor rack.

I believe the 16 channel version is listed at $2499 for the Si Expression.

the producer also lacks the scribble strips, which seems to me to be a pretty big deal. It's essentially an X32Rack with some controls added. Smaller display, laid out differently.

so, the Compact is a smaller X32. The producer is a bigger X32Rack. Pretty comprehensive product line....

I think installation is the primary target for it. If nothing else, it's a 40 x 25 matrix mixer, but it can do a lot more.

In any situation where one might leave the X32 beside the stage and take a pad out front, the Core could save you even having to lug the X32 from the van. If you happen to own one or more S16, the Core makes a complete mixer out of the rack for little money. Now, let's think monitors with iPads and iPhones, suddenly you don't have to rely on the X32 for stuff that is controlled by someone else anyway, you can do specific eq, dynamics and effects totally independent of the main mix, no shortage of buses or anything. Back up recording? The Core plus a MacMini is an extremely well priced AES50 recorder. Need an AES50 effect rack? The Core.
Obviously, anything that can be said for the Core also goes for the Rack, ..... and I could go on and on and on and you probably get where I'm going.

Re: X32 Discussion

I'd like to see the Core used to expand the channel counts on the x32, but I don't see any additional layer buttons on any of the new consoles. 48- 64 inputs would rock. The new Soundcraft can expand to 66 channels, iirc.

Re: X32 Discussion

The Core is the 'mackie 1608' and line6? killer... especially if the price is around the same. Since those 2 both require ipads to mix anyways, you've got all the power times 2 (and then some) in a 1 RU unit...

Edit: I guess you'd have to add a S16 for analog ins/outs... maybe the x32 rack is a better choice?

Except...no in's or outs, You'd still need an S16 or two to use it.

Re: X32 Discussion

Not to sound like an ungrateful consumer, I'm loving the new offerings, and I will own one or two
BUT - they sooooo should made a fader surface or a "wing", and I guess they still could... that would have been awesome.

Example... X32 rack + S16 + fader wing or two, depending on the fader count you want - out front with VGA output to full sized monitor.

I see the X32 Core as an exciting product for a few scenarios I've dealt with before. Think small scale touring theatre with mostly playback sound. Possibly a few live channels for spot reverbs etc. all from scene recalls probably via midi.

Think tiny FOH rack with X32-core, Mac mini with QLab up to 32 channels into the X-32 and one or more S-16s on stage. This could be a killer rig for this use, depending on reliability. I'm suspecting that it may be possible to rig up something like a BCF2000 to handle a few live channels as well.
