Have never tried, but from my limited knowledge, the packet formats are different, so even if you were just sending two channels thru' the ADAT, the SPDIF wouldn't understand. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'd certainly be very surprised if ADAT into SPDIF would make anything but silence or horrible noise

+1 for hooking up DCF2000, that should be is easy to implement.
I can definitely see a market for a core x32 and x16, and what would be super cool was if these units could be linked via a bus to build a scalable system of allmost unlimited size. Haven't looked inside the X32, but if there is a big bus inside, how cool would it be if you could use a Cx32 or Cx16 to expand the X32? Selecting channels 33-48 would simply be a matter of holding down both 1-16 and 17-32 buttons at the same time, so no sweat, while selecting the extra fx might be slightly more tricky ;)~;-)~:wink:
I believe the X16 is quite far along in the design, we already know it hasn't got a UNDO button :)~:-)~:smile:
Skimping on input on the X16 is probably not a terribly good idea, the cost saving will be nowhere near enough to justify having to buy a S16. It would have made much more sense on the X32, and the X48 (or X64 :D~:-D~:grin:) surely has to have some local input limitation, 16 pres would be all you'd ever need, but it would be good to have a few digital inputs and outputs.

I got my X32 yesterday, started to play a litte bit and everything is fine at the moment.
Tomorrow I want to record my band during their practice, so that I can play with the recordings and the board. But I have no experience with Cubase. So my question to Timo, is it possible to share this "template" or give a short instruction how to set up Cubase. What I want is just to record something like 20 tracks and route them back to the board later, like a virtual soundcheck I think (but never did this before).

It's not recommended but in most cases it works. SPDIF to AES/EBU works in most cases also.

I see how important the X16 (which is hopefully next release) it has 16 input and 8 output (expandable via AES50 to 32 inputs and 16 outputs) and card recording 32/32 USB / FW.


As I understand the X32 does not work with more than 32 channels, or at least has no layers to trigger channels 33 to 48.


In X16 lose market if it is limited to acting with only 16 channels, I need (through expansion) she act with at least 24 channels 32 also being the ideal.

Another option would be to avoid 4 layers the table to work with up to 24 input channels (X24?) And have 2 layers (CH 1-12 and CH 13-24) and to keep the cost x benefit would only 4 faders for BUS and Matrix.

Nothing prevents the setting she has 12 +8, but that would make it more expensive.


But at least in my position, if it does not work with at least 24 channels I do not buy it.

X32 and Cubase

Hello


I try to explain.

I am having Cubase Studio 4 - other Cubase versions may or may not have some things different.

Wordsin "-" are what you´ll find on top of Cubase window.

Starting with "File" - select "New project" - "empty" - a window opens to suggest Project folder. Give it a name or number or so...

Go to "Project" - select "Add track" - choose as many you need - in my template i have 32 mono tracks - in real situation I only arm as many to record, that have something connected in them - just to save space on hard disk.

"Project" - "Project setup" is where you choose clock freguency and record format - i.e. 48kHz 24bit

"Devices" - "Device stup" - "VST audio system" - select your driver "X_UF (2665)"

Then you have to set up all input and outputs - I did that manually for each track, since I did not know any other way...

Once you are done, you can save all this in "File" - "Save as template"

Next time it will be there ready and waiting.


What have I forgotten - well , maybe someone can assist futher - after all - I am more tapemachineman.....

1) An X32 like surface with limited local I/O ala A&H GLD. A few mic inputs and some line or RCA inputs and a few local outputs.
An example use for me would be a corporate like event with a few channels of wireless and simple stereo out to mains along with some local playback. For times you need more inputs and outputs you add the stage boxes. I really want to sell my main snakes.

2) An option card for Dante so the mixer can interoperate with existing Dante devices.
An example would be live recording. I realize that the X32 can do it over USB and Firewire but in both cases, the cable lengths are limited. I use a 25' ethernet cable to reach the recording position from my LS9. If needed I could use a 50' with no problems. I rarely have space very close to the mixer position to add another computer.
Another use for me would be to use the X32 as a broadcast mix desk with it's inputs coming from my LS9 via Dante.

3) As others have mentioned, the ability to soft patch individual inputs to channels or outputs to any bus would be a big plus.

4) As mentioned earlier in the thread, the ability to set a UDK to get Sends on Fader for a mix with one button push. I wish my LS9 had a setup option that would default to SOF rather than having to press the mix button twice.
 
Do channel pan controls affect linked output buses?

Does anyone know if I link the 16 bus outs into 8 stereo pairs (1&2, 3&4, 5&6, etc.), will the input channel pan controls affect these? Can't seem to find this information anywhere.

If you select "Sub Group" in the Pre/Post Fader selection under the sends tab for the individual input channels, the channel pan control will control the balance.

The Guitar Center (USA) website now states that the X32 is 'Available in Stores'. If you have a GC near you and they have one, it will be a chance to actually check it out in person and see what all the buzz is about. I had preordered one from GC, and have had it for almost two weeks now, and I continue to be impressed with the features and power of this board.

I thought its really cool idea, I also think that the X-16 should be standard 19 ", but I know that can come with 17 faders (8 + 8 +1 believe would be ideal).

Good idea to put the screen in the corner to get a big space in the other.

You can`t drop the faders so much to the bottom. You need the space for the fadermotors.

...so no scenebuttons

my question: why 8 bus faders? (16 channels to 16 busses? 16 channels to 8 DCAs?)

Firstly thanks to all the contributors (Christian, Per, etc.) who've been answering questions. On the basis of this our church pre-ordered an X32. It probably won't arrive with enough time for me to train the sound operators before the big Christmas services though :(

@Rob - is there a specific reason you want Dante? Another option would be to just record the AES50. There already exists a PCI card that will do this. More products (USB) may come out in the future. Dante is more appropriate if you've already invested in amps/dsp that have Dante inputs already.

@Misja/Per - I've once seen an interface that could negotiate between being an ADAT or SPDIF input (it had an FPGA front end) and I know that a designer can implement it on the DICE range of chips (found in a few firewire interfaces) but I've never seen a normal SPDIF/AES chip be able to handle ADAT - and I know the original ADAT chips from wavefront (part of Alesis and the only ones you can buy) don't handle SPDIF. So before anyone blows some amp or speaker with the horrible digital clickfest that you'll get if you try this... please don't. (datasheets can be found at Profusion plc, Audio Semiconductors and Components)

@Christian - have you heard anything at all from Behringer about implementing password protection of advanced features and set-ups? This is something I could really use at the church. It's a nightmare when someone who's untrained decides to change all the routing on our current analog desk. Last week I struggled with a radio mic misbehaving only to find someone had routed it to all the groups - multiple paths through the desk and outboard later it sounded awefull.

Thanks again and please keep on reporting the tips and tricks you find.
Maybe Behringer could write this advice thread up as the "unofficial manual".
