New Midas M32 Console

Re: New Midas M32 Console

For me looks the same. Only different PCB layout.

Don't know if that does say something about you or the electrical circuit. :lol:8O~8-O~

First I noticed is that the input stage of the M32 uses leaded transistors (TO92 shape) instead of the SMD (SOT23 shape) probably the prefered midas ones are not in SMD.
Off course you see a lot of same things, I bet that the gains are also set with sort of cmos switches, which can be digitally controlled.

It's clear that it's manufactured in china as we all know, otherwise they probably would have used a lot more elcaps in SMD shapes.

I am not smart enough to make sweeping conclusions from a fuzzy photo (maybe if I could read part numbers :-) ). I used to manage a mixer engineering group, and a classic problem when herding (cats) engineers is to keep them from re-inventing every wheel. Mic preamps are fairly mature technology, and Midas has an additional marketing incentive to use iconic Midas circuits into this new model.

If anything about the only thing this suggests to me is that they apparently did not cut and paste these Midas circuits into the X32, as some customers may have believed they were buying.

I don't believe, Tim, that Clayton said "please change the only model you offer so it meets these new smaller specs", did he? :-)

Re: New Midas M32 Console

sorry! I express myself better: I would like the Midas took a mixer containing the same surface of the m-32; but not have all pre-amp in board ... would have only the inputs and output auxiliary ... And only 8 mic in and bus 8 Out ... It would be useful to engage the DL16 on stage and working with FOH surface.

Re: New Midas M32 Console

Money, Tim. Midas preamps ain't free.

If enough people believe there is something special about them (besides or including the soft-clipping), maybe they should sell them as stand alone pre amps. That might be good marketing even if they don't sell many... Reinforcing that they think they are special. (Somebody stop me... now I'm giving them marketing advice.) :-(

And they are not that expensive either...

:-) I find plenty to be critical of Behringer for, but their brand management seems to be well executed...

FWIW consumers generally ASSume that console mic pre amps must be inferior to stand alone pre amps, because the stand alone pre amps cost more. Stand alone preamps cost more, everything else equal, because the packaging and power supply overhead must be fully absorbed by the lower retail price. A x2 pre amp will be even more expensive (per input) while still looking too cheap to be competitive with a premium stand alone preamp and (probably) an even smaller seller.

There are lots of "funny" market perceptions surrounding consoles... glad I don't have to deal them any more.
