New Midas PRO X Console at PL&S

re: New Midas Pro X Console at PL&S

Yeah... Kinda...

Its mainly just really really expensive.

It sounds good, but in practice its physically massive (not just the surface size and weight, but the accompanying 30u+ of rackspace needed), very pricey, and quite clunky to use.
It only does 96 inputs, where consoles of a similar price do 256 (Digico SD7).
etc... etc...

I'd like to see an FPGA based product that has room to grow and a good price/performance ratio.

Supposedly, the main thing with the XL8 is massive processing power (roughly the equivalent of 15 M32), not thousands of inputs or practical format.

A "poor mans XL" series could easily be implemented with a decent surface and a bunch of X32 Rack or X32Core based DL units.

The Neutron is probably a New Pro(ton) - Newtron - Neutron, ..............or not.

What about a lighter/sleeker version of the PRO1 with less local I/O and better computer connectivity. Would love to see that...

re: New Midas Pro X Console at PL&S

I managed to get google to open it translated to english once, then it all went dead again (with or without the #). Pro X or Pro 10, = coming upgrades to 3/6/9, but not I could not tell what specifically (in part owing to the translation). Internals? UI? Externals?

Assuming there is any truth to the now removed article, even not speaking French I can read 144 inputs, 72 auxes, 24 matrixes that can be configured as auxes, and 96kHz sample rate.

We'll just have to wait to find out for real.

FWIW this is my take on what it said but like you I don't speak French.

Stéphane Plisson: Yes! It's official. The new big MIDAS will be unveiled on March 12 in Frankfurt and will be called X, or 10 if you do not speak Roman.

144 inputs, 24 effects returns, 72 auxiliaries 24 can be configured as additional matrices for a total of 96 Aux Sends and therefore a can potentially be used also for returns console, 24 multi effects and all internal 96kHz and 24 bits.

SLU: What will it look like?

Stéphane Plisson: This will likely be an update of the surface of the Pro9 as has already happened in the rest of the range, such as between Pro6 and 9.
There is likely to be two silk screened plates for the new control functions (??), I think the central section devoted to the outputs that will be replaced by another with 24 keys LCD with bargraph. Given the number of sends that makes sense!

All sound real nice with the price drop and all. Just worried about weather the pro series would live up to its reputation as before. We are looking to get the pro 3 and a pro2. But worried about spared and the fact that they are now manufactured in china. Won't their quality of circuits used be less thus making the company able to sell the products cheaper to us??

Not explicitly. There's a lot to be said for efficiency in assembly lines, value engineering, and other advances, such as the new Pro series fader, which they are able to manufacture for less than buying other party's parts and without having them shipped anywhere either. Perhaps they have decided to go for smaller margins per product in exchange for volume, or maybe they feel as though they just could do whatever they wanted with it. China doesn't mean products are bad all by itself. Some of the world's most advanced assembly lines and factories are based there.

Point is- no. China manufacturing all by itself is not enough for you to be worrying about the quality of their products, especially when most of the engineering work on the product is already done. Same parts to the same specs means same product.

Dear All,

The quality of all MIDAS products remains the highest in the Pro Audio world. When MIDAS was originally asked if manufacturing was possible in China they came back to Uli with a 20 million dollar list. In 2011 Uli made the 20 million dollar investment, building one of the most high-tech and automated plants in the world with high-precision SMT machines, in-circuit testers, optical inspection systems that automatically check every solder joint and x-ray equipment that can “see” through multilayer boards with fine-pitch and ball-grid parts. As a result of this highly efficient state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, MIDAS production quality has never been better.

re: New Midas Pro X Console at PL&S

An engineer recently told me that he took a brand new Pro 2 on tour last year. Faders starting failing almost immediately. They were the new Midas manufactured ones. When he called tech support they had him use a drop of nail polish on each one to hold a part back in place. Terrifying. If I'm going to beta test a product I want to know that I'm doing so.

Man. That's total crap. Would be a real nightmare if happened during any gig. Any one else face the similar problem. Did Midas guys say if it was an isolated problem or all boards facing the same problem. Would rather go for the digico d9 if this is the issue.

If it was the same problem as with the x32 the cog wheel that transports the belt could slip due to lack of loctite on the shaft. This was only an issue in one batch from the factory.

The fix was a small drop of nail polish/loctite on the shaft.

As an XL3 User I have to say you put up a tall order for yourself! Good luck with that. Atfer what you did to my investment ( -30% ) I couldn't care less how good your desks are.

Dear Dirk,

I cannot resist any longer, because every post of yours seems to scream for.

So here it is, the old joke:

I actually like that one. Cheers. I am not that upset about it anymore anyway. But when I read Marketing Bullshit like "QUALITY HAS NEVER BEEN BETTER" I could just puke.
