Uli Behringer of The Music Group Q&A

Re: ELX Line Array

Uli, I wish you would consider a 12" coaxial monitor similar to the Turbosound TFM122M but light weight and powered. Turbosound's Milan series might be an obvious placement, but a Behringer branded one might make a larger splash. Coaxial designs give better left to right and top to bottom even coverage than all the horn designs, and very few companies are making an AFFORDABLE coaxial powered monitor. I'll buy a pair today!

Wouldn't the relatively new Mackie DLMs (the ones with the stupid Russian / East European stereotypes in their hilarious wacky advertising) fit your requirements?

Going upmarket, don't Tannoy do self-powered versions of their coaxial point source range (VQ?) that you could check out?

Edit: just remembered the Mackies have no wedge angle and use an attached propping-up part, so maybe not a particularly elegant solution, but still worth having a look as they fit pretty much the rest of your criteria.

I wonder if Turbosound adopting the ELX line array could be an indication that Behringer might have abandoned the Behringer branded foray into the upper MI/lower Pro speaker segment, leaving that segment to be catered for by the Turbosound brand?

Re: ELX Line Array

I don't know if Uli still hangs out here but...
I have a X32-Rack and I love it. Only problem is one of the XLR release linkages arrived broken and I've had a mic cable stuck in channel 6 since December 11th.
A quick look at my calendar says I don't have more than 5 business days in a row without a show during which I could send it to Las Vegas for repair. I've asked service about a cross ship deal but they said they can't do that anymore.

I don't want to do any shows without it, I don't have time to ship it and I don't want to purchase a second unit just because the first one arrived broken.
I guess I'm asking Behringer officials to recognize the plight of the professional and start offering to cross ship warranty repairs. I'd gladly pay a reasonable, think rental, fee and shipping for the privilege.

I absolutely HATE latches on stage boxes or mixer I/O - but I do understand some might want latches for a fixed install. I sure hope someone figures out an easy way to remove the latches? One cheap fix is to cut the "stuck" cable off at a foot or two and install a XLRF and live with it until you have time to send it in for repairs. OTOH I cringe when I hear of folks not having a spare board - although I presently only carry a 4 channel analog as a backup to my DL1608 :?~:-?~:???:. I'm hoping to pick up a used one for ~$500 one of these days - plus then I'd have the option of 24 channels if I ever need them 8)~8-)~.

Re: ELX Line Array

I do carry a small backup but it would kill me to use it for a show. I love the X32-Rack and anything else would be a big step back. If my current unit were to belly up, I'd rush out and pick one up as soon as possible but for a problem like this... I've just been wrapping the cable and storing it in the back of the rack. Works fine but when I show house techs my new rack it doesn't leave the best impression.

Re: Uli Behringer of The Music Group Q&A

OK, Rob let me restate it more directly...
Mr Behringer, as your products are becoming more accepted by professional touring musicians and engineers, will you start offering a cross ship repair program?

Dear Mark,

We currently do not have plans to offer a cross-ship repair program, as we don’t have product available for this purpose. In the event a product needs service, we provide the following options:
- Customer ships unit to us and we will repair with a one-day turnaround time in most cases.
- Customer can stop by our CARE facility in Las Vegas and have it repaired on the spot.
- Customer can bring it to a local authorized service center. You can contact CARE to find the closest one to you.

You can contact our CARE department via email at [email protected], or by phone at 702-800-8290 in the US or +44 1562 732290 in the UK.

Yeah, seen the Mackies. Yuck.

Looking for something like the db Technologies stuff but hoping for a more economical solution. Flexsys 12" goes for $1K each. Alto makes a 12" powered for $300 but it's impossible to get a hold of one to check out since no one seems to stock it. Seismic Audio and Proel make them, but no idea what they sound like or if they're reliable.

Seems to me like more manufacturers would want to make these.

dB Technologies IS an economical solution. Do you want it cheap or do you want it to sound good and work reliably?

Re: ELX Line Array

I tried the Alto... don't bother. I know Dick Rees likes it but I've had one here and I couldn't believe how uneven the frequency response was. I even paid the restocking fee to get rid of them.

I went with a simple 16 channel patch bay the day I bought and racked my X32 Rack and along with bringing the inputs around to the front of the rack it also means that I never have to touch those XLR release mechanisms which I despise.

Joe, Thanks for your response but it really isn't that helpful.

I can't stop by Las Vegas and there are no local authorized repair centers for the X32 line. The entire X32 line, and all the other high end Behringer product, must go through Las Vegas for repair.

If I shipped it next day (Monday) and you repaired and shipped (Wednesday) I'd get it back Thursday, provided there's no issues with the shipping or the repair. Currently, I could do that in May. The concern is, of course, hoping everything goes smoothly and having no backup plan available if it doesn't. I carry a spare mixer for a worst case scenario but not having the mixer because it's been sent in for repair of a stuck cable isn't on my list of worst cases. We just got off the road with 18 shows in 20 days. Every house tech I worked with loved the unit but asked about the stuck cable. My "we've been on the road for a month" excuse has just been used up.

You have a great product but now your company is servicing professionals and the service needs to step up. I've been told you're not cross shipping because you don't have the product. You're Behringer, right? I bet you have some around. Cross shipping will be a boon for your service department as well by scheduling repairs based on rental availability instead of rushing when units hit the door.

As I've said before, I'd pay a reasonable rental and shipping but it seems unreasonable to require customers to purchase two mixers to have a spare in case one goes down.

Who do we talk to to make this happen? I trust you're in constant contact with Uli.

Thank you for your time.
Mark

What are you really expecting for $3K?

Re: Uli Behringer of The Music Group Q&A

Professional level customer support costs money and that is just one more reason why professional gear costs more. Mass market manufacturers satisfy most of their value sensitive customers with offline return/repair model without significant'y impacting the product cost. If the product is cheap enough buying two is perhaps the logical way to deal with this and meet professional up-time demands.

What do professionals do when computers or other consumer type gear used on the job fails?

Once again John says it best. The level of support that you seem to think is necessary typically comes with products that have an extra digit (or two) in the price tag.
