X32 Discussion

Re: Installing X32 USB ASIO Driver

As I have just recently considered getting a new mixer, I have spent the last 2 weeks researching digital mixers. Thanks to my Luddite ways, I am now trying to make up for lost time and catch up to the 21st century. Maybe it is just my age, but I'm finding learning about digital boards is more challenging than I thought it would be. Especially when it comes to routing and all the cool possibilities that are now open.

In Tim's reply to your post, I feel he has a valid point. Tim, if I hear what you are saying, this is a community of people and because of that, there are lots of varying opinions and expectations everybody has about this forum. That is what makes the world go 'round. Perhaps we all have to ignore certain posts and admit that just about any post may have the potential to irk somebody who may post a reply about their level of "ikedness", but in the end hopefully somebody will respond with an answer, and bless that person willing to help out and take the time to reply!:D~:-D~

Best regards,
Bill

I work for an "analog Luddite." He's the boss and that's why we still own a couple of large analog mixers.... Don't feel bad, Bill. Look at digital mixers as a way to make all the old analog mistakes in greater quantity and much more confusing to trouble shoot.

My take on "support" via the internet goes back to UseNet. Anyone who doesn't know what that is needs to use Wikipedia... okay, I'll give you a hint - before there was a World Wide Web with all sorts of fancy forum software, UseNet was a threaded, topic-specific discussion board system. VERY specific to the point that off-topic posters were flamed in ways that led to Nomex garments and asbestos undies... and before you posted your question(s) you'd damn well have better searched that "newsgroup" for your problem or issue. If the question had already been answered you'd need the aforementioned attire. Have come of age in that environment I routinely search many avenues before posting questions; that's why you don't see me posting many questions... it's not because I'm some kind of genius (far from it) but because I've found the information needed to answer my questions or at least point me in the right direction to find those answers. Perhaps I'm projecting my own desires or needs onto others, but frankly if someone isn't willing to make a similar effort to research and learn, why should I give them answers? It's kind of like expecting dad to do your homework, IMNSHO. Particularly frustrating to me are folks that ask questions that have already been addressed multiple times in the same thread or on the same forum. That's why I previously said "this is not a living wiki that awaits questions and dispenses answers."

Have fun, good luck.

Tim Mc

ps. start a new thread if you have questions about digital mixers in general or have questions about other makes/models. There is no shortage of opinions... ;)

Re: Recording effects into a DAW

If you want to record the processed signal, you need to route the signal with effects via a bus to an output, and record the output.

Thanks. I have not used any Bus yet, believe it or not.

I do know how to assign signals to the various busses though (create a group that is).

LOL! That is my 1st impression. God forbid I get to the 1st gig and one thing has been switched on or off or rerouted. it could be a nightmare trying to track it down.

Thanks for the invite to start a new thread with questions. At this point I'm scared s##tless.:D~:-D~ Meanwhile, I'll keep reading pats of the manual and checking out the great webinars Behringer is putting on. I've watched some of them twice, and will probably watch some of them a time or 2 more. BIG THANKS TO BEHRINGER!

Case/doghouse tray idea...

Hey folks. Just wanted to share my latest venture in the shop- and how it relates to the X32.

I always put off the little things in my humble setup until its nearly too late. The router. The extra monitor for the computer. Blah blah blah. Well, not anymore. I decided to build a case to contain it all. 1/2" and 3/4" 13-ply Baltic birch & MDF and a little Duratex later I've got something that I think will prove highly functional.

A couple of notes as you peruse the pics...
1. The slots below the sides of the console are to accommodate 2 rack mount servers running Windows 7. I'm waiting on rack rail to arrive this week. One computer for console and amp control, and the other for recording.
2. The armrest is wrapped in gray leather and the little area to the right of the phone cradle is for a mouse.
3. There are two 2U racks below the console (below the keyboard/script slots immediately under the armrest). They will be used for Clearcom, Furman, and super quiet fans to help keep the servers and console cool.

Please tell me what you think. Oh, and the LCD's are actually mounted to the underside of the doghouse lid for easy deployment. And yes, they're mounter upside down. They fit in the case better that way and Windows lets you flip the signal with great ease...

Very nice, any guesstimate on weight?

Re: forum etiquette

Ah, the days of news servers, Gopher and for the non-elite: newsgroup gateways to FidoNet for us lowly BBS users and sysops. And not all usenet groups were filled with sanctimonious jerks - just the Unix ones :p Once again, just because someone is asking an "obvious" question isn't necessarily an indication of them not "searching" long enough for it

When I finally get my x32 it's nice to know there will at least be some forum members around that will answer without sarcastic attitude. And yes, I kind of expect this attitude while trundling around the Interwebs and generally I try to ignore it, but it's still anti-social and deserves to be called at least every once in a while. I never understood how being sanctimonious could be turned into some badge of honor, but that describes a good chunk of late 80's/early 90's usenet indeed! I'd hate to see that perpetuated here or any similar forums. I think we can do better than that era and I certainly don't hold that up as the model for community support!

I wholeheartedly agree!! What seems totally obvious to one person, can be totally confusing to somebody else, and doesn't necessarily mean they haven't tried to do any research.

Re: Can't we all just get along?

Hello everyone!

Been on the road lately here in Norway with artist Hilde Louise Asbjørnsen and thought I`d share some experiences with the X32.

Have done 10 gigs so far all over Norway with this artist, still some to go.

Most in-house engineers have raised their eyebrows regarding the X32, but at the end of the night it`s been all thumbs up even from the most sceptical Behringer bashers..

Last night at Rockefeller Music Hall in Oslo, I had a Midas Heritage 2000 + tons of outboard removed from FOH location to make way for the X32.

FOH speaker system was a EAW KF system using Crown Macro-Tech amps. On other locations we have used anything from L Acoustic`s KARA, Meyer MD-1 to cheap chineese knock of`s.. All systems needed it`s share of tuning.

Heres a couple of pictures from the Rockefeller gig.

Soundcheck.jpgShowtime.jpg

I`m using the splashtop remote desktop app for remote controlling X Control. Hopefully the iXcontrol will be fully functional soon. The band really enjoys me being with them on stage adjusting monitors.

Did a mulltitrack recording of the show via USB, maybe I`l post a clip later on if I get permission

I agree with the frustration to an extent, but I can also vouch first-hand that coming into this topic late can be one heck of a challenge to read through and find what you're looking for... When I came in I believe we were on page 135 or so... I read through about the first 10 pages, then skipped to about 80, and still spent another hour+ reading through to get to the end of the topic... I'm sure I missed some stuff in the middle there. At the same time, while people could always search for what they want, sometimes forum search results aren't great, nor are people always sure of what they're trying to ask, so search terms may not be correct.

Just playing devil's advocate, I'm well aware there have been cases where people have asked a question that was answered less than a page earlier; but asking something asked weeks or even a couple days ago is more understandable from the perspective of someone finding this topic "late in the game", no matter how annoying it is for those who have been in here since day 1.

Very nice setup! I like the idea of throwing the rackmount servers in there; I just hope there's somewhere for heat to escape out of the box.

And I'll be honest, I'm kind of surprised you didn't go for touchscreens on there; I know they're a bit thicker but I could see how they might be handier than a mouse in mobile cases like this... (Do you plan on having two mice on there? one for recording and one for control? Or using a KVM switch?)

CAT5 cable recommendations...?

So, another weekend, another gig.
This one was supposed to be a 'white glove' gig, as the venue had their own X32.
Things were not all rosy though.

Turned up with my template show on a USB stick. The desk would not load the show.
It turned out that my desk was up to date with the v1.09 firmware and the venue desk only had v1.05 loaded.
It had crossed my mind to bring my 'updater' USB stick with the latest firmware on it, but I figured that there would be too much paperwork to fill out to bring a 'foreign' USB stick into their environment, let alone what it would do for their documented procedures...
What I did do was bring my own desk, as there was room in the van.
We took the venue desk out and installed my own and everything worked like a dream.
It always helps when the venue has a good PA system and this one did (Sherman speakers/QSC amps).

The venue tech mentioned that he'd tried to update his desk using several sticks, but with no luck.
This mirrored my experience.
I can only update my machine using a very old 2Gb stick.
Funnily enough the desk can record shows onto any stick I have.

Anyway, the desk performed perfectly, as did the P16 monitor mixers running the bands IEM systems.

This leads me on to another issue, CAT5 cable.
Is there a CAT5 cable out there that is as flexible as mic cable?
The cable I have (Belkin) is a bit stiff. When uncoiling it retains its coiled shape. When coiling, it has a mind of its own.
Can anyone point me to something that is usable on stage?

Karl.

Re: CAT5 cable recommendations...?

I see the mistake I made. I didn't define my problem in enough detail.
I have a couple of 50m Cat5 drums for the main run from stage to FOH.
My problem is with the drops from the P16D to the P16 mixers on the stage.
The runs are 10-15m.
I'm after half a dozen of these, rather than one long one on a drum. I don't need another drum.

Your reply wasn't a total fail though.
It looks like I'm after tour grade Cat5 cable.
Anyone know where to find that?
I'd prefer ready made to 'roll your own'.

Thanks.

Karl.

I did think about the touchscreen idea. With the depth of the tray, including the armrest, it put the usability of touchscreens just out of reach - pun intended. My FOH set up has in it this case, as well as an old pull over rack fitted with drawers from gizmos and gadgets. I plan on using one of the touchscreens atop the rack, beside the console, to control the recording PC, and utilize the Windows on-screen keyboard to eliminate the KVM. A rack-mount keyboard/mouse unit is in the top of the rack as back up...

Which, brings me to the subject of ventilation. The hole for the servers below the side of the console is mirrored on both sides. There will be a fan pushing air into the tray under the front of the desk, and a fan pulling air out of the side to help with airflow.

Re: Case/doghouse tray idea...

Hello

i certainly hope that case is for permanent installation instead of being mobile - it is going to be seriously heavy.

Not for install, but yes, for mobile. all things included, roughly 225 to 250lbs. If the EZ tilt can flip a 400lb PM4 or XL4, it can certainly flip my little guy.
