Re: Todays Gig

Not sure I would leave my coffee cup sitting above the mixer like that![/QUOTE] It may not be coffee. Either way I would not leave it that close to my mixer whether it was coffee or not.

Inputs - Possible feature request

I am finally picking up my X32 tomorrow. Very excited! I have been reading up on some of the more subtle features of the console, including on routing inputs. I think I understand the basics: e.g., the notion of selection inputs in blocks of 8 as sources and then being able to individually asign those sources to 32 channels.

My experience on the digital side has largely been with the Tascam DM-3200 where you can basically route any input to any of the 48 internal channels. (In fact, you can route two inputs to each channel and use the "flip" button to switch between record and playback mode for multi-track recording and playback.) On the X32, why limit the number of sources (not channels) to 32? If I want to use two XLR inputs on the board and have the remainder of the channels come from 2 S16s on stage, assigning a bank of 8 local inputs from the back means I have 6 unused inputs and limited my inputs to 24 from the stage. If there were 48 sources (i.e., another column of 8 inputs of the block patch page), I could pick 2 channels from the local in bank and have 30 channels left to pull from the 2 S16s.

I apologize if someone mentioned this already. I may read the post previously (been following the thread since July) and not really understood the point at the time. And in case someone argues that the X32 would require more processing power to do this, keep in mind I am not talking about processing 8 more channels of signal, just having access to 8 more sources to choose from in assigning to the same 32 channels.

Other than screwing up the current routing home screen, am I missing something here?

Hi Kevin,

You should be able to do this using the auxes (not quite 8 more sources but 4 anyway)- have not tried this yet but the way to do it I believe is:-
in the input routing assign the auxes 1-4 to "local 1-4" this will assign the auxes to the xlrs inputs 1-4 ( with gain).
This will then allow you to have all 32 channels coming in from the S16's and 4 local XLR inputs
- have a look at the webinar on routing / or the one on the S16s on youtube which explains this - a "cool feature" as Joe would say - clever eh!

Hi Nick,

Thanks for the quick reply. Funny, I saw the "Local 1-4" option for Aux ins experimenting with the XControl software after I posted my message and figured that might solve the particular example I gave, so that is certainly helpful. But I would still be interested in knowing why the sources are limited to 32 (plus 4 for the assignable Auxes, of course) and not some higher multiple like 48 or 64, which could then allow greater flexibility when assigning specific sources to individual channels. Behringer developers are probably the only ones who could answer that question.

I guess the ultimate flexibility would be the ability to assign any input to any channel (e.g., assign AES-A17 to ch. 1, AES-B32 to ch.2, AES-A41 to ch.3, Local 9 to ch.4, etc. similar to the Tascam DM paradigm). I recognize that is not the X32 architecture and that may be part of what keeps the X32 simple to use and cost less.

Anyway, I guess I can experiment a bit more directly once I get my hands on my new board tomorrow. (Yeah!!) Not anticipating getting much sleep for the next couple of days...

X32 Dreamers

Something I'd like to see would be an X32 version of the Yamaha PM5D DSP. Basically an X32 without the surface etc, just input pres and DSP, controlled by a regular X32 (via card) allowing double the inputs without the need to take up the width the space of a bigger console.

First gig with iPad

Had my first show last night using my ipad. It was nice because instead of using my giant multicore snake (no s16 yet) I put the x32 next to the band on stage, plugged in direct, sound checked and setup monitors mixes, then went out and sat at a table with the crowd. So a couple of observations about the night...

1) I had my first system freeze! Not exactly sure how it happened. I suspect it had something to do with the iPad app. I had my iPod playing before the set started on aux 5,6, and the iPad was asleep. I think it happened when I awoke the iPad. The band was just about to start, and I went to the console to grab my phone and it was completely frozen, but still passing audio. I would think if this happened during the set, that no one would notice because it was still playing. Of course I couldn't make any adjustments until the end of the song, and then I would have to power my mains and monitors down, which is what I did. Rebooted and went on with the rest of the night. Still would be quite embarrassing. I'm not terribly worried about it.

2) Off the bat I was being approached left and right by patrons noticing what I was doing. A total of 15 people actually interrupted me while I was mixing to say, "Are you controlling the band from here!? No way!!" Sure it was a little cool at first, you feel like the cool guy. Then it got really annoying. I lowered the brightness on the screen as much as I could and tried to hover over it so I could hide it. Not a big deal but not something I really thought about until I was in the situation. But hey if you like breaking the ice with strangers this sure is a way to do it. And now that I think of it actually a pretty good way to pick up girls. Hmmmmm.

3) it did the job. It worked. However. After my experience, I can strongly say I much, much prefer mixing on the x32 itself! It's nothing against the app itself, I feel the same way using the presonus app on their board. It just cannot replace the amount of control as having the x32 surface in front of you. That "tactile" feeling is just gone. Like mixing in Pro Tools with a mouse. (Actually that's exactly how it feels). I use the BCf2000 with ProTools. And I would NEVER go back to just using a mouse now that I'm used to it.

So it's cool to have, but I definitely will not be doing it on a regular basis. And if they come out with a rack mount unit that only does the iPad thing, I'm not into it. For me anyway. I gots to have me'z my faders!! The board sounded great otherwise and I still love my x32! Rock!

I've done a similar setup, but I used a Lenovo tablet instead of the iPad as the early versions of the iPad app were lacking some critical functions.

No freezes to date.

I agree on number two, the novelty wears off fast.

I also agree on number three, my preferred setup is to have the X32 at FOH position and use the iPad as a wireless "monitor desk". Nothing like the feel of real pots and faders when you are trying to mix. Still, having the option of wireless mixing for jobs where it is impossible, or inconvenient, to have a footprint out front makes for a nice addition.

stereo channels to stereo sub groups

New on this forum, but I did read here many days for quite some time.
Now I made the jump, and I registered. :)
Something I couldn't find:
If I have a stereo input, so linked 2 input channels, how can I manage to get Left to mixbus 1,3,5,7,9 and Right to mixbus 2,4,6,8,10. So that I have in the end more stereo mixes besides the MAIN LR. For what I can find, I only get mono buses. The only solution is unlink the 2 channels and mute / turn down levels. I would like to see when I select the left of the linked channels I can adjust the sends, and when I select the right of the linked channels I can adjust the sends for the right channel.

I want the channel link for the gain, eq etc. But not for the sends, or a less preferred solution would be that if I choose subgroup as a bustype , the odd/even channels follow the PAN/BALANCE.

Maybe most here don't see the problem, but I have sometimes different rooms to cover, without some channels. I was used to use subgroups for that.

Not sure I understand you but you can link the mixbusses too.

Recording in reaper

Perhaps I missed this somewhere, I did a search but couldn't find anything. I have also watched the behringer webinar video.

I'm using Reaper to do some recording. I am looking for a recommendation on settings for monitoring. When I have a singer listening to playback (inputs for channels are on card 1-8, etc) and we try to monitor his vocal as he's recording it listening to playback there is a delay that makes it near impossible to get the vocals on.

I can change the routing to monitor the vocal on the board, but if I have playback channels routed to that block of 8 I will lose some playback instruments...any suggestions appreciated!

Thanks,

karl

p.s. - I hope this makes sense. If not I will try to explain better

Re: Firmware Upgrade

Looking at a few UPSs for use with the X32, is the 20ms time an estimate or a hard and fast "This or more will trip the mixer"?
Found a couple that suit my purpose physically, just need to know the specifics are correct before I go spending money.

Now that the prices have come down I always go for the "online", "double conversion" or similar terminology UPS's. They have dual inverters - one inverter charges the batteries, the other runs your equipment. These are my favorites right now - I especially like the rack mount models for when you do have racks to mount them in. You never have to worry about switching time since there isn't any! The next best thing are models that have active voltage regulation. Your UPS isn't going to be worth much if you get sustained voltage sags (how hard is that to imagine at an event or venue with temporary power that's probably overloaded?) and your batteries deplete and then the UPS just switches off. Units with LCD displays are very handy so you can see what's going on with voltage well in advance of it becoming a more serious issue.

USB Playback/Recording

If I understand correctly I should be able to play "bumper music" in between different groups ect. through the USB port on top of the console. If that is the case, I can't seem to make it work.

I have tried three different USB sticks and a portable hard drive. On the hard drive I can see the actually music files but it will only play about the first second of the file.
On all three USB sticks I can't see the music files at ALL, even though they are there.

All the USB sticks and the hard drive are formatted in FAT32. I've even tried totally wiping the drive and reformatting it, but still nothing. I tried putting the music files in the root of the drive and in folders, nothing.

I've been able to update the firmware from all USB sticks and I can also record to the USB stick and play that file back on the console.

As far as file types, I've tried .wav .wma .m4a and .mp3 both protected and unprotected music. I haven't been able to find any specifications in the manual on what the console will actually play.

Has anybody had issues with this or has gotten this to work? Does anyone know the specifications for the file types?

Thanks,
Andrew

the playback only supports 16 bit WAV files

Re: Ipad mini for remote control

2nd question, I could only find one reply about using a ipad mini for remote.

I like the size of the mini, but I'm afraid that it will be too small to adjust monitors in front off a mic stand. Any experience?
I have the mini and a 1st gen iPad that I use. Both feel just fine to me without much difference. If you have big hands you might like the large version better. I love the fact that the mini fits snugly in my back pocket when walking around on stage between making monitor adjustments when I need my hands for something else. Just get a good screen protector as dirt from the stage on your hands can really scratch the screen.

in regards to functionality with the Xi app- no issues there either. Works just fine.
