X32 Discussion

Re: X16 (dreamers version)

Perhaps they're apprehensive about somebody copying the design and selling it cheaper.

JR

PS: By now I expect you could probably fix this stuff by feel.... With a working unit side by side you could probably figure out when the good foo turns into bad foo...

Re: S16 Gains

I found this quite informative post on gearslutz (behringer really should have a faq for things like this!):

(article about zipper noise on trim pot)

I noticed this day before yesterday, but in my case it seems to be more of a "pop/crackle" than "zipper noise" like I've heard in other devices. In the X32, it occurs when the input trim reaches around 11am on the indicator, and is almost like a dirty pot sound in that it will diminish as you work the pot to the point where it disappears entirely. Leaving it sit and then coming back to look for it can cause it to appear again on any particular attempt, but it definitely reappears sooner or later. The "pop" is quite a bit below the mic signal, but still more than zipper noise I've heard elsewhere.

It was first noticed while using a phantom powered mic to test the console upon acquisition, but it occurs with any mic and also with no mic or cable connected to an input jack. It occurs on all channels, but disappears when the channel is muted or the fader is off. It is present on two of our three X32s, and the third one is buried in the truck so I haven't checked it yet. The two consoles have not yet left the shop and are brand new otherwise.

Since this is my first post on this forum, please let me say how much I appreciate Christian starting this thread and being so free with his observations and other posters following suit, and how much I also appreciate the personal attention Uli and the rest of the Behringer crew have paid to this thread and responding to comments here (not counting the headphone/monitor noise issue ;-) --FWIW, all three of our consoles have it, although one of them seems to have less in the left headphone jack than the right-- either noise level is still kind of a deal-breaker for acceptance as a monitor console for the clients to whom we provide).

This thread is directly responsible for getting my attention to focus on the console, leading to the purchase. And my company is now a Behringer dealer!

Re: Firmware Upgrade

Used the deesser tonight. Is there a manual explanation of the functions?
I think it needs to have an auto threshhold ability. I couldn't get it to do enough and it seemed like more input gain may have helped. Really want EQ on the FX returns...and compression too.

Re: Firmware Upgrade

Hi Paul,

I got this figure from the development team, it it the amount of time they measured before protection shut down occurs.
So I would say this or more would trip the shut down.

Hope it helps.

Certainly does, Joe, I now feel safe in spending money on the right UPS for the job.

Cheers

I'm impressed that problems like the solo thing are fixed quickly, but also disappointed that scene protection is still not implemented.

Re: X16 (dreamers version)

Mick, you are missing the point of my post entirely - I know all about isolation transformers and have a very substantial pile of broadcast grade 600/600 "get out of jail free cards". The point is that for any other mixer I care to use, be it Soundcraft, A&H, Mackie, Presonus, Old Midas etc etc, I have this big filing cabinet with full schematics, and should something untoward happen, I can fix it. I am in no way implying that any of these or the X32 are in any way fragile or unreliable, just that sometimes SHIT HAPPENS. When the excrement does occur, as an occupant of a small island at the end of the earth, I like to be able to deal with it. For this, in the absence of a functional crystal ball, to occur, I need schematics. <end of rant>.
M

I did miss the point, didn't I. My apologies.
Although I was a Midas technician for a while (I remember all those Sowter transformers), these days even the internals of a Mackie 1604 are too miniaturised for me to take on. I can't imagine what the X32 would be like!

Re: Todays Gig

Howdy

I remeber when I as working at Finnvox Studios in Helsinki around 1975...... One monday service men came in studio A only to find, that there was traces of chocolate on Studer mixing console.

It turned out, that friday night on session someone had left his cocoa-cup on meterbridge ( on Studer 189 it was still horizontal & vertical - nothing slanted...) and then someone tossed it on channels....... They did not call anyone, but simply tried to wipe it off with paper towels..... Substantial propotion of cocoa made its way into modules through holes in top panel - the service department spent the whole week just cleaning up four channels - there was still some minor issues left after that.

I am SO GLAD I was NOT there when it happened - I know who it was ( so does service department ) , but hey - Santa Claus is coming and we want to be nice......

AND - if anything liquid goes into mixer - I definitely wish it would be a mixer with individual channel strips instead of X32 type construction - easy to pull the bad ones out and keep on working with the rest - X32..... well - just get another, if the liquid hits the board with processor - same goes with any digital console.

p.s.

Tomorrow will be first gig with S16 and XiControl - three bands - house is sold out two weeks ago - fifties rock - I am going to set up my laptop for recording with FIWI as well just for experiment - really looking forward to this.

Re: Todays Gig

Oh yes, that's just disaster waiting to happen :-(

Andre

Back in the 80s, I walked into our studio one morning, and the channel 1 & 2 faders on our brand new console were locked in place. Turns out, someone had spilled a soda on it the night before and just wiped it up, without thinking about the liquid that went inside the fader assembly.

Re: Todays Gig

Christmaspresent came early this year. Yesterday my x32 was delivered. Its great, didn't found any productionfaults. Still trying to get it connected with reaper, but even with the webinar beside it still isn't working. Tomorro I'll grove it another try. Maybe posting some pictures or screenshots if I can't figure it out.

Cant wait until the first show to mix with the desk in january. Till that time I'll be mixing on a pro2 in a big church nearby. Keep you postenposten

Hi Sieste,

Congrats on the X32!
I will have Dennie Edwards our Product Specialist get in touch with you.
Dennie knows Reaper pretty well.
