I have been trying to figure out if the X32 would work for my needs.
Hello Kevin, i too do a lot of musical theatre and are looking at the x32 but i am not sure exactly how you want the scene recall to function.
Personally i use the recalls on the iLive to mute mics off stage and assign the onstage mics to dca controls so that the mics i need are always at my fingertips, labeled and in the order i need them. individual levels and Eq's are set during a soundcheck scene and do not need to be saved or recalled during any other scene until the end of the show where i do a store to save any alterations i have made during the run of the show to create a starting point for the next soundcheck.
In that sense you should not really need to update your scenes during a show unless you are also using the scenes to alter the orchestra mix.

I too do around 4-6 shows a year and the X32 looks great for the smaller shows, but i normally handle shows with 48 inputs so the console is a little small for my needs ATM.

Perhaps an option in the system needs to be an "update, next" similar to what the iLive (which is the console i use and still have great trouble with the scene management) where you can assign a soft key to udate the current cue then sit ready to hit the go button to recall the next cue.

It still works that way, but is still a pain in the arse to actually operate a show with.

Almost no digital consoles on the market have been designed with theatre users in mind. What a theatre operator wants the desk to do is simply more than the manufacturers are prepared to do for what is fundimentally a niche market. very few musical theatre operators at this level and budget are prepared to spent the time creating hundreds of scenes to allow for every cast entry and exit so they dont have to worry about finding mute buttons on the fly. Most manufacturers cater for the live market where you might have a system setup scene, followed by a soundcheck scene, followed by a scene stored for each song or band etc.

Yes it was strong, but still in essence accurate. More likely it is not something they are willing to spend the time in to get a multi purpose console on the market. We are not talking about an amek recall or a cadac console here!
Perhaps you should look at using a dedicated show control software such as "Palladium" and it's supporting softwares, created and designed by a pro theatre designer and operator Chris Hubbard.
www.chsounddesign.com. The software is designed to control multiple desks via midi, as well as firing sound effects and changing mic eq's to match performers and substitute for understudies. This is a system designed to do precisely exactly what i think you are wanting the x32 to do.
The other added benefit is that almost every major show is the same. so you can take the communal show file from the website and apply it to your situation by inputting the relevant information
