X32 Discussion

re: X32 Discussion

Sorry, my wording was quite clumsy. What I was trying to put across was that your recommendation for style of UPS shouldn't be taken as mere suggestive recommendation, but as an absolute necessity.
My suggestion is that such a device doesn't have to cost a fortune since the power requirements are quite modest.

Ah! After re-reading your message later I thought as much. Such is electronic communications - had we even just been on the phone your intent would probably have been obvious. And yes, costs are pretty nominal. Indeed, UPS costs have come down so much I'm slowly picking up one every other month or so in order to get even all of our amplifiers protected. And a nice side benefit, remote control of the power outlets! Our amps are in another room upstairs and if the X32 does pop on reboot being able to power them down remotely is going to be a real boon. And even though they will add some serious weight to portable gear, I can't think of a situation that would justify such power conditioning for all gear more than the uncertainty in what you will find at a remote location.

Even if we can't convince everyone to cover all their gear, at a minimum I do agree that you want to protect the console! Just budget it into the initial acquisition cost - you'll be glad you did!

Re: How to build a cheap digital console... powered by Midas

As I understand it, the X32 can take the 96K signal from the midas pro series, downsample it to 48K and use it.

My understanding is the Midas stage boxes do the downsampling, not the X32. The B guys have been pretty clear that there is no 96K flow anywhere in the X32 and that's the relm of the Pro series boards. Makes sense to me since there is a dramatic difference in data quantity and bandwidth in going to 96K - it's a decidedly NON TRIVIAL issue. This is an under $3K board - I realize you studio guys are looking for a cost effective solution but stay away from my live board 8)

re: X32 Discussion

The only methods I know of at the moment are:

Lack of external world clock seems to be one of the bigger obstacles to integrating the X32 into a more integrated digital setup. Hopefully an expansion card with external world clock will be one of the first add ons offered!

re: X32 Discussion

Last saturday we used the X32 running monitors for our Blues Brothers Cover Project (Jake and Elwood's Blues Review). I programmed everything offline with the XControl PC App and had two hours of teaching our band monitoring technician who used to run monitors on a Yamaha console.

Great writeup - thanks! What would be great is if there was a place where people would be willing to share their configuration files like what you did and then talk about 'em - there are multiple ways to solve issues and create mixes, and with XControl, save files and the digital nature of these desks it's very easy to exchange and share configurations to foster learning and sharing of tips and tricks!

re: X32 Discussion

We will be doing another Webinar Users Group next week.
- Routing In-depth

That's my vote! What would also help those like myself that are visually oriented is a simplified signal flow diagram like figure 2 in this article but customized for the X32 of course. If we can have it ahead of time to have up either printed out or on a different screen it would help me follow along with the discussion tremendously. I need the equivalent of the map in the mall with the "you are hear" big red X :D

Another request - please group/label the logical sections visually so that they can be referred to during the presentation. And if you want to get more crazy, two or three sample configurations to solve different requirements starting with a basic single console, traditional install with some wedge monitoring to a dual console FOH/Monitor mix console situation with stage boxes, in ear and all the goodies! If we have those ahead of the session, then we can refer to them on our own and you don't have to try to juggle as much with showing them on the screen along with the points or live demonstrations.

XiControl - No Faders in Mtx-Main View

Hi there
Just set up my iPad with XiControl and got it connected via Apple AirPort Extreme. Just having a problem with the matrix-mains layer, can't get faders and therefore no control. Is this a known issue, if not any suggestions to a solution.
Thanks in anticipation.
Paul

I just got the Xi Control running today and notice the same thing ... the faders in the Mtx-Main view are either not present, or are a ghost image left from the previous view ... i.e. Ch 1-8, Ch 9-16, etc.

All other views appear normal excep the Mtx-Main view.

Also, if I mute the Main, it won't un-mute via the app!

I've deleted and reloaded the App, but that has not helped.

Any thoughts?

Thanks ...

re: X32 Discussion

For those in the US looking for an affordable ATA case OSP, made in china, is now making cases for the X32 and they are for sale for $270 shipped in the continental US. When I receive mine I will post pictures and general fit and finish opinions. I have owned several OSP cases in the past and they are very sturdy but the finish can be a little rough but not horrid. Overall I will say that I appreciate having OSP as an ATA case option versus going with the custom route.

Here is the link for those interested:

OSP ATA Mixer Case for Behringer X32 Digital Mixing Console

I will say that I have had great customer service from sigler music as well.

Hard to tell from the pictures, but make sure this case allows for venting heat which is exhausted from a fan on the bottom of the X32. The pictures seem to show that the mixer will lay flat on the foam. If there is no venting, that would not be a good thing.

SafeCases in Houston makes a nice X32 case that allows for plenty of venting. It fits my X32 like a glove. Definitely worth a look.

Maximizing outputs and sums

Somebody asked me why I need more than 16 busses, well... in my application i use them as follows
4 busses are required for FX sends
1 - Drum master
1 - Drum Punch (kick+snare) heavily compressed
1 - 6 BGV's (compressed together)
1 - Rest of instruments

That's 8 total, and I'm left with only 8 for monitors but I need 12 monitor mixes, I don't like the idea of the P16, I like the idea of using an ipad or itouch to control each monitor mix as you can tap into any of the 40 inputs of the board (not limited to 16 channels).

Hello

You can get your monitor output count up to ten by using DCA:s for "Drum master" & "Rest of the instruments"

If you have enough free input channels, you could split kick & snare to 2 free channels, compress the hell out of them and control them with another DCA - now you are up to 11....

Plus if you can do the same with 6 BGV's ( whatever that is... ) - then you are up to 12 monitor channels.

Hope this helps.

Of course - if your DCA:s are already occupied - just forget it - but at least you did noy mention it...

I've just ordered a case for mine from SafeCase.

As Rob advised, due to the fan on the bottom of the X32, it's especially important to allow for proper ventilation.

There are thick foam strips on the bottom tray of the case to support the feet and permitting adequate airflow under the mixer.

Dear Bob,

Great question. I wanted to jump in here and confirm for you that they way your Xi Control app is working is correct, but only for now. The Mtx-Main view among a few other features is not yet implemented in version 1.1, but hope this will be one of the features added on the next release.

hi Bob
I received a email from Behringer saying that it was a known issue and a update/fix was in the pipeline, no times frame was given. So we wait, patiently!

re: X32 Discussion

One word - Fantastic!

Using the x32 in full swing tonight for a dress rehearsal of the Musical 'The Producers'. 20 lavalier wireless mics, orchestra behind a gauze at the back of the stage. Speakers set up front of house , centre clusters, subs, stage fold, orchestra folds, sound effects controlled via desk using midi and my laptop and iPad in the auditorium for a quick balance out of all the speakers. First time in over 170 productions when I have been able to experience the true audience perception of the sound in so many different seats! Think I might just buy another as a back up! Looking forward to the little fixes such as the bug on the matrix mixes on the iPad. Can't grumble really. To top it all, got my old set of decent wireless headphones out of storage, set to bus 1, using the mutes for remote monitoring of users mics.

Flipping great product. Well done Behringer. Only downside is that I can't use it in a couple of shows time because that theatre has a mc7l set up. Quite sad about that really!

Anyway flight case arrives tomorrow!

re: X32 Discussion

Hi James,

Thanks for that.- How exactly would I go about syncing everything to the stereo aes out?

Pauly

Sync via Firewire is not possible. If you have two interfaces connected to the same computer they will not be in sync, unless you clock one to the other via normal methods.

The only methods I know of at the moment are:

Make x32 clock master and sync everythiing else to the stereo aes out.

Use the lynx aes pcie card which in theory can act as a bridge between word and aes50.

Dear Eric,

I just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Chris Painter, and I work for the Music Group on Joe Sanborn’s team. When we do the Users Group Webinar for Routing In-depth, I will be one of the presenters so I'm glad to see a vote for this one ;)

Thanks for the suggestion on the block diagrams! While we don't have too much of that worked into our PPT just yet, we'll see what we can add. In the meantime, there is an excellent block diagram in this style for the X32, which is already available. Check page 26 in the X32 Quickstart Guide =)

If there are any specific aspects of the routing you want us to cover, let us know and we will be sure to include them in the Webinar! Or if you're stuck on anything now, feel free to ask.

I hope this helps!

Hi Chris,

Thank you for joining.
I want to use 3rd party audio processing software in conjunction with the console.

Last weekend I have tried setup:
X32(monitor) <->X32(FOH) <-> PC (to run VST host program)

On X32(FOH) I did setup:
1[SUP]st[/SUP].FiWi 32in/32out, the routing on card was mirroring of all input channel from X32(monitor) via AES50A1 to AES50A32.
2[SUP]nd[/SUP]. Home Routing selected inputs (Card 1-32)

With this setup when I run some VSTs on PC I had distorted signal on the inputs 1-32 of X32(FOH).

But when I did in Home Routing selection of Aux inputs (Card 1-4) which is I expect Aux return, it was working perfect, no distortion, no noticeable delay for VST plugins,… What is reason for that it was working? According to Block Diagram, from FiWi card both inputs 1-32 and Aux return are on I/O Patch.

According this it could be nice to understand, how the FiWi output and inputs are routed in the I/O patch and on the DSP patch boards.
I would like to ask, what kind of routing for FiWi card I could use to work it like send/return?
